After looking at the existing route we decided to explore whether a different way up Sheep Mesa is possible. After following the ATV trails to the base we climbed towards the top while avoiding the cliffs that protect a good part of the mesa. The hike up was exhausting but doable for us with lots of breaks to catch our breath and enjoy the views. There is no trail up as far as we could tell - we tried to avoid the major washes and aimed for the saddle which worked great except for the fence we had to go under right at as we reached the mesa. The views were great all around, flowers in bloom up the mountain side so it was a nice climb overall. Returned via the same route more or less as best as we could to the base of the mesa.

I've always wondered about the Sugarloaf exit across from the 4-peaks exit. This was one area that I've never explored.

This was my first time using the HAZ route manager to create a route. I plotted a path from the bee-line to the Verde river. It used ATV trails 420, 1855, 1856 1096 and finally 160. I noticed that the route made a U around a canyon and a wash. I zoomed in and made a 'shortcut' route through the canyon and wash.

Now the hike. There's an extra big trail head for ATV staging. Within 1 mile from the TH, there was three camps of people target shooting. The route curved around Sugarloaf mountain and dropped into the Sycamore creek. There was a couple of people camping down here. I checked out the gauging station and noticed a couple of motorcycles going down the 'shortcut" route. I continued on the main route and went around the Sheep Mesa to Lonely mountain. Then the trail got rough and nasty in some spots. Soon I was on ridge line looking West to the Verde. One the more distinct landmarks was Dynamite Road going into the Verde. That was the end of the road. I got to the Verde and found another road that lead to the Needle Rock area. There's a lot of cattle paths in the area. I went between the cattle paths and road over to the Needle rock area and had lunch there.

I headed back and found another path to the a rock beach area by the Verde. Now it was a long slow climb out the Verde to Sugarloaf area. I contemplated taking the 'shortcut' route back. It was pitch black when I hit the intersection. The shortcut was a well-defined motorcycle path. I broke two of my nigh hiking rules:
-don't night hike on a trail you don't know
-don't night hike with water or water crossings

I gambled that if the motorcycles can do this shortcut, I can do it in the dark.

The motocross section started out with narrow trail/trench that went up and down / up and down very steep grades. Eventually it gave away to a hard pack wash that lead to the canyon with the Sycamore creek. The creek was dry at the first, but the water appear shortly and got deeper. I hit a choke point where I had to scrambles over a couple of boulders. The canyon's not that long and I made it to the Sheep camp without getting wet. The rest of the hike was just climbing out to the trail head.

It was a long, but fun hike. There's a lot more to explore in the area. I'll be back.

Pictures and routes will follow.

After having driven by Sheep Mesa 3 times in the last few weeks I figured it was about time I climbed it. With plans to climb Lone Mountain and Black Mesa as well (NOT the one in the Supes) I wanted an early start. But I woke up at 1:45 am and had the idea ion my head to check out more of the many roads in the Sycamore Creek area after the hikes. I should have gotten up and mapped everything out right away, then when I'd be ready to go. I didn't but was awake for over an hour before drifting off again. Then when I got up I got a bit too involved in mapping out any wash or track I could see on the satellite view. So in the end, I got a late start.

But as sometimes happens the late start was a good thing. When I arrived at the trail head it as cold and very breezy. With the sun well up and the climb ahead of me I figured I'd get warm. It wasn't to be... when I reached the false summit I was wishing I had a warmer long sleeve shirt. But I guess the extra effort to reach the summit warmed me up even though it was windier at the top. I shot a panorama video at the top calling out by name each landmark and upon my return I played the video but couldn't understand what I was saying. Oh well.

There was no summit log at the top so I added one. From the summit I could see much more of Sheep Mesa than I thought was there. It continued toward the southwest dropping a little bit at a time as I followed it along. Once out of the rocky area almost everything was covered with fields of grassy fox-tails. It wasn't long before my socks were hidden completely by the fox-tails and they were driving me nuts. So I pulled the socks off and continued in bare feet in my Teva sandals. Much better! I guess I'll go back to hiking that way again, except I'll be sure to pack my heals in lotion more regularly to keep them from cracking, which the socks helped prevent as well.

I saw many signs of animals but no animals. Eventually I went far enough SW that I figured it was easier to continue on down and return via FR1096 than to back track. On the return trip FR1096 goes between the Black Mesa Tanks and along wash back to the trail head.

No time to get the photos posted tonight but I'll get them up soon. Oh yeah, I'll have a few videos as well.
