A fun and hearty trek once again following the footsteps of the legend himself, Outlander.
As far as the upper canyon goes this really is one of the only non technical entry/exits, as the heart of CPC is guarded by some pretty impressive red rock cliffs around most of its perimeter.
The game trail was it’s steepest and had the loosest footing during the upper sections through the oak thickets but once in the pine stringer halfway down the tread became more manageable.
Once down in the canyon it was pretty slow going with constant maneuvering around pools and deadfall but nothing to stop one in their tracks.
It was tempting to proceed further but unless making the journey all the way to “Vine Canyon” or the confluence there is only one sane way back out.
After making it back to the rim I spent some time wandering around the flats enjoying some foot friendly ground until sunset.

A nice quiet day roaming the expansive rim of Calf Pen Canyon along with a little dabbling of going down in and skirting pockets and drainages of the main stem.
Came across a big herd of Mule Deer, few old lion kills and plenty of signs of other mammals throughout.
Little snowpack and plenty of mud at the 6700’ level but once past or below that the spring ground is showing and I’m sure soon to be laced with greenery.

This was a twist on plan A that came about when Chums decided to join and suggest a tweak.
Ever since the @Outlander trip to Calf Pen Canyon 6 year ago, this area has been on my radar.

At just shy of 4 hours to get the 3.25 miles and -2000' to lunch at Calf Pen and Sandrock canyon, we did not set any land speed records for navigating this unnamed canyon, but there was no reason to. After discussions, we dubbed this Vine Canyon, for the many vines in the canyon. This canyon included numerous non technical down climbs, maple thickets, dramatic rock formations, PI, plenty of water and plenty of evidence of past illegal irrigation activity.

Leaving the Sandrock / Calf pen area, there was running water all the way to the Fossil Creek Dam area. Pretty slick rock areas and signs of an old trail tread in places. When we reached the intersection with the Mail Trail #84, the sign facing the direction we came from, read "Dead End"

We stopped in the Springs area of Fossil Springs and cooled off in the water. Next up was the old dam area. There was a small group enjoying the water. A bit downstream is the cave area that we decided to swim over an check out the inside of. Quite a cool little gem.

Making the retreat back to the truck, the temps were a tad warm on the climb out, but the breezes helped. On what I'm calling the unofficial Nash Pasture Trail, the climb gets steep in spots. I'm not sure on the history of this tread, but it is defiantly and old entryway into the springs area.

Good times in some new areas. I can tell this was a different type of hike, I'm sore in spots today, not normally sore after a hike.

As we noted as walking by, this has H2O in it, among many other ingredients. Wait to to hit the Cheveron station in Pine.

Joe has been itching to visit Nash Point since it was renamed in 2005 for the winner of the NBA's MVP award that year. Finally, Bruce was able to draw up a route to hit this remote peak. And off we went!

Outlander didn't reply to my PM queries asking how challenging the route would be, but we decided to descend Vine Canyon anyway. It took us almost twice as long to descend as it had taken him to climb up it. Oh well. I spotted one of the bears he assured we would see, though I didn't get a photo as his butt ran down canyon ahead of us, so I'm told it doesn't count.

Sometime around 2pm and 20% of our planned mileage complete we decided to sit down and have lunch.

There was water along the entire hike from Vine to Calf Pen to Fossil and the springs when of course the flow increased significantly (There might have been less flow in Vine if the irrigation tubing had been diverting all of it, but alas, it was broken in several spots). A handful of bikinis, uh, I mean people, were lounging at the dam site, but for the most part the area was relatively quiet. After a few swims we headed up the main trail before turning off and making our way up the steep climb to Nash Point.

Joe decided he didn't care about Nash anymore (something about him being a soccer commentator now?), so we cut 45 minutes off the day and headed back to the truck.

Bruce was trying to lure us back to his cabin "for a drink", but all kinds of alarm bells went off and I was able to avert whatever that would have lead to!

Fun loop. Rugged terrain. A little bit warm on the climb out. Some poison ivy. Something that I was allergic to destroyed me for an hour or two. Otherwise great company and nice to cover some new terrain.

Was helping a friend with some landscape work in Pine most of the day and afterwards we were going to do Nash Point but high bone chilling winds on that ridge led us to CPC.
Mainly just explored the many draws and drainages that make up the headwaters of the massive canyon beckoning to be explored.
Calf Pen always has perennial pools but from obersvation I have a feeling it’s gushing with water right now from healthy snowmelt and saturated soil and will be a fine place to enjoy under the current conditions.

Even at the headwaters there was decent flow so I would imagine the main canyon is gushing.

The mission was to hike Calf Pen Canyon and its major feeder streams.

Calf Pen Canyon is the jewel of the Fossil Creek Wilderness, a place where few people venture, despite its close proximity to civilization. It has a beautiful flowing creek, old-growth forests, abundant wildlife, and no trails or amenities whatever. In short: it is a great place to spend some time. I make the hike every summer, usually opting for a day-trip, and then hustle over to the family cabin at Strawberry. The best case scenario is to arrive just as dinner is being served, dirty and bedraggled, with a new story to tell.

Calf Pen Canyon has cliffs along much of its perimeter, making access rather difficult. I took a new route in this time and found it to be a good option. There is a game/bear trail that follows a steep grade all the way down to the creek, which cannot be said of the other access points that have many cliffs and drops, requiring leg burning portages and walk-arounds. Once in the canyon, the bushwhacking is about a 6 of 10 on the difficulty scale, with plenty of rocks and deadfall; it gets progressively easier as one moves down river.

There must be at least 10 bears in the canyon, and rarely do I pass through without seeing at least one of them. The bears usually come down from the Manzanita thickets each day around noon to wallow in the creek. This year’s outing was slow compared to usual, with just a few fleeting glances of the bears. There are lots things to see, but if you are in a hurry, you might miss it.

It is about a 10 mile hike from Calf Pen Canyon to Fossil Springs Trail #18. A person can hike it at a leisurely pace in one day and still have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. However, if you dally in the side canyons, it will take much longer. They are choked with vegetation and very steep. I ditched my pack to hump up those side canyons, but even without the burden it was tough going. In the first side canyon I felt like Spiderman, climbing and pulling my way up the hill with ease; but that did not last very long. After a few more side excursions, I was dragging tail on the way out. The last hill was new ground for me, and I discovered another old grow site that was penciled in as a “probable” on the my map.

The story is not complete without mentioning the legendary dope grows of Calf Pen Canyon. In the year 2005, drug cartels took over the area and had thousands of marijuana plants in cultivation there, causing much environmental damage and several incidents with hikers on Fossil Springs Trail #18. The Gila County Drug Task Force, along with federal law enforcement agencies, raided multiple sites in the canyon and arrested four Mexican nationals, seizing a total of 19,000 pounds of marijuana. The place was cleared out and has been fairly quiet ever since.

It has been interesting to watch the forest heal itself over time, with each year in passing the trash is less noticeable, the Manzanita fills back in, and new life springs forth from the stumps of felled oak trees. The recovery would be near complete if it were not for the ¾” PVC drip lines that blanket the area. It is a durable material with a half-life of 100 years, or so it would seem, and nearly indestructible.

I doubt that Calf Pen Canyon will be ever used again on account of all the attention it receives from law enforcement each year. However, it is common for growers to reuse old sites from time to time. Every summer is a new game, a reset, which keeps things interesting out in the backwoods.

Water is everywhere down here, as well as further up the hill sides with many flowing springs.

Hike, bushwhack, rappel, downclimb, then reverse the route. Temps were pretty good. Canyon is OK.
