Joe tried to trick us into hiking Lion Mountain again this week. Bruce nearly sacrificed his Subaru to avoid that fate. Meanwhile, the Jeep was sitting in a parking lot in N Phx/Scottsdale instead of driving to Sheep Bridge.

Came up with Plan B since it was in the area, and seemed doable with the weather forecast. Lime Creek was a new one for me, so I was game. Someone else in the car was less enthusiastic, and seemed to only enjoy the first and last quarter-mile of the hike, all because of a big tree.

The rocks and catclaw on and along the trail are a little annoying. Everything else was good. Nice views. Sunny for part of the hike in, then clouds started to build. Found ways across all creek crossings that kept our feet dry. Saguaros and Cottonwoods twenty feet apart is always a treat.

A few sprinkles as we neared the cabin. We looked at the glyphs first, great panel, then had lunch at the cabin while sheltered from the rain. We donned rain jackets and headed back out. Most of the rain was during the big ascent. Tapered off to barely a sprinkle for the last mile, but the mud was sticking to our shoes. It’s hard to say what part of the hike Joe hated the most, there are so many possibilities. Still, a fun day, as always.

Up
The highlight of the hike, a world-class Sugar Sumac, comes within a few minutes. Thereafter, the hike up to the saddle is essentially a slanted version of Half Moon.

Down
From the saddle down to Lime Creek sports enough ankle-buster rocks to sled over for a wild Sonoran ride.

Over
The hike over to the cabin has a nice quarter to half-mile section along the babbling creek.

Toe Jam & Scribbles
Musky Cabin is stocked with expired canned goods. The side trip to the destruction-of-nature wall is a quick pack-free jaunt.

Return
It rained for 74.2% of the ascent. Everybody was excited to see the Sugar Sumac heading back down to the car.

Synopsis
I presented three legitimate hikes. In protest of the by far sensible option, Bruce chose the second hardest of the three. The road to Sheep Bridge is currently unwise without 4WD and high clearance. Bruce was a good sport romping his car as far as he did! 0.14 seconds after deciding to abort, two people in the car went from dead quiet to celebrating like they won Powerball.

Well, that didn't go as planned.

It was Joe's week to pick, and he threw out three losers. (Will somebody man or woman up and hike to Lion Mountain with him?) I picked the one that had us starting at Sheep Bridge TH, since I had not been there in 11 years.

FR24 was its typical 27 miles of roughness. We turned east on FR269 for the 12-mile trip to the Verde and made it through both crossings of Tangle Creek. At 9.5 miles to go, after climbing a particularly rocky section, we made the decision that this was going to take too long in the Subaru for the planned hike. Also, up to this point, it had not rained yet.

So, tails between our legs, we came up with a plan B on the fly. Linda had not done Lime Creek Cabin, it was on the way back, so it was on. Joe was overjoyed!

The trip down to the cabin was uneventful. There were a few creek crossings that slowed us down a smidge. We dropped our packs at the cabin and made our way over to the petroglyph panels. Always a treat.

Back at the cabin, a light rain started as we sat for lunch. We waited for a slight break and then started back. The heavy stuff did not start in earnest until we began the climb out. It lasted for two-thirds of the climb out. Glad to be at the saddle and starting downhill, we began picking up extra weight with the mud collected on our shoes.

We were glad to be done and in the heat of the car. Some of us enjoyed this hike more than others.

Hiked to the cabin and beyond. Nice country, it’s starting to grow on me. Ran into a hunter on the way down around mile two, nobody else the rest of the day. There was water flowing at Lime Spring and a slight up tick in the flow where you reach the creek. The cows seemed to have multiplied since my last visit.

This was our first time in the Cave Creek area since early this year, and neither of us had hiked to the cabin before, so we were looking forward to seeing something new. FR 254/FR 1099 were in good shape and were a non-issue for a high-clearance vehicle, though there were a few spots that might be challenging for low clearance. It was 41° and a little windy as we got started a little after 7AM.

The trail can be a little hard to follow in places once it branches off FR 1095, and there's some catclaw to deal with, but it's mostly avoidable. Once we reached the saddle, the views to the east opened up as we started the long, rocky descent toward Lime Creek...the trail definitely has a Y-Bar feel with the very rocky tread. Horseshoe Reservoir was visible for a while, with nice views of Sunset Mountain, Lime Peak, and the Mazatzals beyond.

We visited a few small, extremely deteriorated ruins sites on the hike in. They were only noticeable because of the high concentration of rocks in those areas, and the second site was the only one where there was noticeable rock stacking remaining. We didn't see any pottery at the sites, though there was a broken piece of a metate at the first one.

There was a little water in Lime Creek that required a few simple crossings, and it was a nice mix of fall color and big saguaros around there. The area near Lime Spring was dry, though we didn't follow it back to the source. A single cow greeted us near the cabin before running off as we approached. The cabin is well-stocked with tools, lawn chairs, food, cookware, utensils, a mirror, toilet paper and much more...looks like a popular camping area. We took a lunch break in the corral, and coincidentally, it was there that we found the only piece of pottery we saw all day.

Before we started back, we went over to the petroglyphs and explored that area, accumulating a lot of scratches in the process. The panels were bigger than I realized, and it's an impressive site despite decades of graffiti mixed in with the original rock art, including drawings in a fairly narrow crevice in the wall where a chunk of the cliff broke off. The "modern" graffiti dated back to the late 1800s and spanned most decades since then. The Cartwright name appeared several times on the walls...surely related to the Cartwright brothers whose name appears on the shed at the cabin site. There's a large beehive above the panels that had quite a bit of activity, so we gave that plenty of space while exploring.

On the way out, we saw a frog at the creek crossing, then started the long, rocky hike back up to the saddle. That part of the trail can get a little tedious, but it's an enjoyable hike with a lot of variation in the landscape over a relatively short distance. We didn't see anyone all day and had a nice sunset on the drive back home. We were both happy we chose this one today, it was a nice first visit to Lime Creek.

We wanted something close to town and hoped to find a bit of color in Lime Creek. Kind of a late start around 9am but still chilly. Hiked up to the divide and took a short break with great views into Lime Creek. At that point we could see there was some color in the creek.

After the break began the long descent into Lime Creek. Reaching the creek we took another break with water flowing in the lower creek section. Then headed upstream to the cabin site and the spring. There was a trickle in the spring but good enough to fill up a Nalgene bottle in about a minute if needed.

Done at the cabin we did a quick trip over to the glyphs panel before hiking back out the same way. The hike out is long ascent of around 2000 aeg back to the divide. It's only 1 mile from the divide down to the vehicle so it was quick end to the hike.

It was nice to finally knock this one off the list today.

The road off of Seven Springs Road was in excellent shape and appeared to have been the recipient of some recent maintenance. We started hiking about ten minutes to seven, there were some hunters in the area and a couple of quads and a truck parked near the start, but they were the only signs of humans we saw all day. A long and somewhat tedious descent to the creek, with a little overgrowth. There was some water at the bottom of the descent and some light flow in spots for the first few tenths of a mile up stream. The cabin and immediate surrounding premises were kind of trashed, with a lot of junk and trash strewn about. More junk and rodent damaged items inside the cabin, and some long expired food, but not much in the way of usable amenities. I climbed on top of the dry-pour over near near the base of the drainage that Lime Spring flows into, but it was dry and I did not observe, or hear any water trickling down from above. There may be some water at the source, but I did not go that far. After a nice break at the cabin, we explored the surrounding area some and headed back. A bit of a slog climbing out, but manageable.

Planned to host a meetup hike the day b4. The toughest hike I'd ever posted. No one stayed on the list. The next day I was able to get a couple friends out to this outing. This had been on my wishlist for awhile.

This was a more adventurous outing. HC vehicle neccessary, no TH & only saw 1 group on horseback. All 3 of us missed a turnoff even though it was cairned. 900 ft e.g. between miles 2 & 3. Amazing views then open up.

Progress was slow traversing thru the steep & rocky terrain. 1 diehard was running low on fluids & decided to wait it out from that point. Beautiful once u reach the water. Though route finding issues slowed the 2 of us down. Went smoother on the way back.

Decided this would be a fun spot to check out, since I've been on a bit of a "cabin" kick lately. Started at around 10am, with warm temperatures. Figured the hike back out of Lime Creek would be a bit rough. The trail was in much better condition than I was expecting.

Lime Creek was nice, but heavily impacted by cattle. Cabin was in good shape, and there were some horseback riders there setting up camp. Seemed like regular visitors.

The spring was an oasis, decided to explore up to where the water stopped flowing, a good 5-10 minutes each way.

Lucked out on the hike out, as a nice cool breeze arrived, and the afternoon actually seemed cooler than the morning.

Bruce slapped together a gnarly loop back in 2013. Being so close to home and not in the Superstitions I gripped up a storm until we hiked it. Tables turned and I've been itching to get back out here for the past year. Better yet, holiday-group-hiker jlp was joining!

Bruce's subi got a passing grade for the drive in with stock-ply tires. The hike to the saddle is cake considering all. From the saddle heading down, mountain views are damn sweet. However, you spend a large slice of the descent keeping a constant eye on the rocky footing. The lower third is naggy thorn bush. Nothing dense. I'm grateful a trail exists. Desirable trails attract undesirables anyhow, perhaps this oughta be the new standard. =)

Lime Creek is a refreshingly welcome change of pace. Ribbons everywhere and GPS may help. Good ol' Wally radar feeling out the terrain probably nets quicker likewise results.

We stopped to investigate water coming down the ravine from Lime Spring. I snapped a couple of photos and headed to the cabin. Took me ten minutes to realize I was alone... lol Headed back and saw they dropped packs to go check out the source. I started up, then decided it might be wise to stay put. So I had an early lunch, sang 99 bottles, and wrote a book. Freebie breaks rock! I smelled a skunk at 9:50 am, luckily it passed almost as quickly as it arrived. Later, they confirmed similar so it was probably a mile from either of us. pur360solutions dot com says we badass humans can detect 'em up to 3 nautical miles(3.45 mi).

Bruce wanted to show John the inscription wall. After two-geeks gone wild simmered down, we returned to the cabin for lunch. The hike out with two weeks of winter before spring starts was the warmest it's been this year. A fabulous breeze made it ten times more enjoyable than descending.

Synopsis
I packed for twice the hike because I didn't grasp the plan. Albeit abbreviated vs 2013, still a gem of an area and a great day.

LP was looking for something other than South Mountain. It'd been more than 5 years since I was out here. Time to hit it again before the temps started climbing.

I was concerned about the road, in off of FR24 with with the stock low profile tires on the Subi. It's a bit rocky, but it negotiated FR1094 just fine.

Comfortably chilly at the start as we made the climb from the TH to the saddle. At the saddle you get great views down into Lime Creek and across to the prominent Sunset Mountain, Lime 3789 and beyond to the Mazzys.

If you don't like the Y-Bar Trail, you really won't like this one. There is a lot of foot watching with all the rocks. To take in the views, you need to stop.

Down in Lime Creek, the trees are beginning their transformation to green. The use trail to the cabin is flagged and more prominent than I remember. There are only a few places where you need to hop over the water in the creek.

We checked out Lime Spring. John and I decided to go looking for the source. We went up quite a ways until it dried up. After that we hopping out to the north, looking for a faster way back down. It all worked out.

We took John over to the scribbles on the rocks and then returned to the cabin to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

I let the mountain goats take the lead on the 1900' climb back to the saddle. They were nice enough to wait for me a few times. (They had no choice, I had the keys) The breeze made the climb bearable.

Bruce and Joe graced me with their presence one more time. I hadn't hiked to Lime Creek cabin before, so when I saw Saturday's selection I was in. Picked up Joe and met Bruce at 0600 for the trek to the TH.
The trail is pretty rocky with a little catclaw thrown in for good measure. Not for the feint of heart.
The cabin, springs, and glyphs are all really cool and worth the hike in & out.
Always fun to hike with these two comedians. Thanks for driving Bruce. :)

First time into Lime Creek so it was good to check out a new area. From the dirt road we hiked up and over the saddle to begin the descent into Lime Creek. Where the trail hits the creek there was good flow which continued for awhile as we hiked upstream. But eventually the creek goes dry heading to the cabin. Near the cabin there was fair amount of water coming from Lime Spring. We climbed up the hill above to see the source. We didn’t quite make the source but surprised to see how much water was flowing down the hill. Passing the cabin we hiked over to the petroglyph panel and checked that out. Then back to the cabin for lunch break. After lunch we hiked back out the same way. Only issue we had was the wind on the way out. Seemed like hurricane force winds on the saddle so we moved quickly back to the vehicle. Otherwise good hike into Lime Creek.

Seemed like a nice day to hit this one. I realized it's closer to my house than picketpost. And definitely a lot more reward.

The road section at the lower part is probably a couple of years from being fine for any 4wd to drive. The quads have been giving it a workout. Water in the creek along that stretch. A little catclaw up by the saddle. No problem with shorts, but somebody with loppers and 15 minutes could restore it to a perfect track.

Y-bar love the whole way down. Sounds of rushing water near the bottom. As much flow as any time I've been here. Wet crossings were avoided with some carefully placed rocks. The only place it was dry was the wide open area just below the cabin. The spring was running at least 5gpm. Cabin was excellently stocked, and the supply spigot was delivering water like home.

Bees nest above the petropictos was still there from last time. Not terribly active, but still some audible buzzing and enough to keep you alert.

Nice breeze, but the sun was warm on the way out. 33 to start in the morning with all the layers, and 65 on the drive out. Last weekend of deer bow hunt so a handful of lazy hunters glassing from trucks parked along the road. Always a good one! :)

Scenic, rugged route to a cool destination. Trail is rocky and somewhat overgrown but not hard to follow. Light flow in Lime Creek.

First time I have ever posted a hike on any site...so excuse any mistakes. Learning.

Met up with 2 childhood friends plus 1 (23 year old son of one) at AJ's Pinnacle Peak & Pima 7am on a beautiful Saturday. Took us approx 1 hour to reach the trailhead. Recent rains washed the road out a little and standing water in washes on 1094 as we drove in. We hiked up the jeep trail to the pond, never could see the trail the cuts off to the left before the pond. Small rock cairn had tumbled and no evidence of a trail. We bushwhacked a little from the pond until we connected with the trail and continued to the gate. I wore my Luna sandals and shorts for this hike and while the sandals worked out fine, I regretted not wearing long pants. Lots of scratches on legs that will heal in time. The trail down is just as rocky as everyone described. I brought hiking poles and used them briefly on the way up, mostly I just had to pay close attention to each step. Once we hit LIme Creek we missed the horse trail on the the other side and just followed the creek until it was very tough going. Thankfully I kept looking off to the right and at some point caught sight of the trail we followed through the gate on on up the creek until we could see the cabin roof in the distance. We saw zero human footprints on the trail or in the wash other than our own. Some deer tracks, javelina poop, coyote poop and a few white tail deer. Also what we believe was a large barn owl flew low right over our heads as we approached the creek.
At the cabin there were bags hanging inside, we figured a couple hunters. We did see an arrow along the trail, so maybe bow hunters. The cabin is in remarkably good shape considering its years, must have been rebuilt in the past 20 years or so. My great uncle ran cattle in this area back in the 40s to maybe early 70s and this structure looked newer.
the spring was beautiful however from recent rains the water still a little less clear.
The leaves changing color made for a most spectacularly beautiful canopy for the hike and very colorful views from the trail heading in. This is a hike I would love to do in every season as it would offer fresh views and photo ops every time. Uncle Ted and I rode horses in the area several times while he was in his 80s until just after he turned 91. I wish we had ridden up Lime Creek. He spoke of it and drove me up to the corrals he used by Horseshoe dam but we never took the horsed up the creek.
Grateful to HAZ for giving me the opportunity to visit this location. Next time I will probably take the creek up from Horseshoe just for variety.
Took some nice pictures along the way and just not sure how to post them here. Would do this hike again...biggest challenge is getting another day pass from wife until our kids get old enough to not drive her nuts while I am gone all day. Ha!

we were surprised at the beautiful autumn colors just as we started the hike down into Like Creek.

Tried to locate source of Walnut spring as it was so close to the parking area. The foliage was so dense around the area the spring should be that there was no way to get close. Machetes were useless. Once would need branch cutters to get in close enough. Recent rains made the whole area damp to it was not easy just to trace the water to the source.

As described, this hike is tougher than the mileage and AEG represent as the footing takes constant decision making.

With that disclaimer out of the way, it was worth the challenge. The trail traverses beautiful and varied sights—botany, geology, archeology and biology are your hosts for the day—and they spoil you in grand Arizona style.

Windy and cooler weather and a later hike start may have precluded wildlife sightings, but track and scat gave us insight to area residents.

Overgrowth exists, but wasn’t too much that work arounds were needed. The hike was showy with fairy dusters and four o’clocks— most likely enhanced from the October rains. The views off the bench below the saddle descent is all you need to make this your turnaround point. But alas, we had a few points of interest to see further down into the creek.

The fall foliage along Lime Creek was a more brilliant turn of orange and yellow than the trail ties leading us through the creek passage to the cabin. Perhaps a few off trail turns could happen here but eventually you get where you need to be. Two human relics, a canteen and camp chair were the only signs of civilization as we made our way to the cabin.

At the cabin, we were cordially met by one of the two, Coues deer hunters camping at the cabin for an extended hunting opportunity. We toured around and spent lunch exchanging information and drinking the spring water nearby before setting off to find the petroglyphs.

Another point of interest worthy of finding, we spent some time following along the wall looking at the old and newer graffiti.

Back down the wash, past the cabin to the return, the hunter, lacking connection to the outside world asked about the election results and we complied adding that he should be happy to be the Senator of Lime Creek and the world beyond need not disrupt him. How lovely to be out of communication signal and to rely on passerby’s news to connect you to happenings beyond the creek. (Life Goal)

That return trip is something of a workout. Okay, it was tough. Thankful to have the fastest hiker of the group holding open the gate at the saddle for those of us further behind.

Like every hike, the last mile finds me savoring the moment and kind of sad to see it ending which, other than the truck starting, is the best way to end any hike.

Quick overnighter to the cabin with my dude Jamaal. I tried to come out here a few months back but made a wrong turn and didnt bring a map so never made it. Good thing I didnt, because it was a lot longer and tougher than I expected. The hike down the hill was nothing special, just very rocky and ankle cracking. There were a few ruin spots but they were pretty bare and not very interesting. Once we got to the creek bed it was real nice and shaded. There were tiny orange ribbons to mark the way to the cabin. We were very surprised to see how stocked it was! From 4 beds outside and 2 on the inside, to the chairs, to all of the fuel, to the not expired cans of food, to the running water.. It was a nice surprise. Spent the rest of the afternoon cleaning up the cabin and camp area and exploring the spring nearby. After we got home I saw some of the other trips here and those glyphs! Will definitely have to go back to check out that panel some time.

Nice area to visit. Thanks to OregonHiker and Chumley especially for sharing their trips.

It appears there was a moderate landslide in upper Lime Creek in November 2017 where a 100 ft cliff collapsed into the creekbed (about 2 miles north of the ranch). My estimate of the time is based on the appearance of the stuff that got crushed. Also, there are brand new fences and fouled springs throughout upper Lime Creek, likely the result of some land deal with local ranchers.

The cabin is OK. Looks like it dates to 1945-1950 or so. Wasn't a permanent residence though since it lacks a stove/chimney. Probably just a place for the cowboys to sleep. Disappointingly, the creek is not really flowing, just a small quarter mile section or though where the trail crosses.

Rain throughout most of Saturday was mildly problematic but it seemed to keep all the people else away. Maybe even the wildlife too as I saw only one small deer all weekend.

Sunday it was dry so that was nice for a change. Found a bit of snow hiding in the shady spots on the ridge on the way back, and the Mazzies in the distance had quite the dusting.

Trying to start doing a really good hike once per week again. I love exploring this area, there is so much history. I was on the correct trail for 1.5 miles and somehow got onto some obscure game trail that led to the wrong saddle. Explored around for a little while, ate some lunch, and headed back. Saw one javelina and lots of birds, that's it. No humans this trip. Lots of evidence of ancient ones, however, there were ruin walls on top of pretty much every hill I climbed up. Now knowing the correct route, I will be back to see the cabin and the petroglyphs soon.
