Got a little exploring in with the family. Not a long one for us adults but plenty of hike for my 3 year old son. On the drive in from Mayer Wolf Creek was flowing across the road and Turkey creek had water across the road so it gave us hope that our hike would have some water to play in but unfortunately Turkey Creek was bone dry in the segment we hiked. Even with that big storm back in January this area looks like it needs a lot more precipitation to give things life again. I’d recommend not doing this hike in summer. There is not much shade. Either the Goodwin or gladiator fire looks like it hit much of this hike. Still some small stands of pine here and there but most of the hillsides are torched. Lots of horse poop and dirt bike tracks I’d guess that’s who’s using this trail the most. Always fun hiking with the family but the warm temps, scorched hillsides, and lack of water made for kind of a lackluster hike.

With fond memories of Arrastra Creek Trail #275 I created a lower loop of a larger loop Bruce created in 2013.

Started on FR67 just outside the Pine Flats community boundary. Headed east on FR67 1.1 mi then FR52 Senator HWY 0.7 mi to FR84 which would take us up to Keegan Trail #91. However, an aluminum gate with two daisy chained locks had us crawl under since it's not signed stay out, private or such.

A half mile up FR84 is the theoretical beginning or end of Keegan Trail #91. We encountered a plastic No Trespassing sign with "under video surveillance" handwritten below. The sign in hindsight may have been for an adjacent stock tank. A purposely misdirected, "oh did we write that on a no trespassing sign, it's just video surveillance for our tank". The twin gate access was not locked, in excellent easy access condition and not in a FS mapped private area. I took a stab at getting the official status on this one and Elouise Trail #306. Will update if/when I get response. #306 clearly goes through an FS mapped private area. Both are currently listed on the FS website. Hikebot got the trail data from a public gov gis file many full super worm moons ago.

With an easy bypass and not seeking trouble we aborted Keegan and backtracked to Senator HWY. Took Senator up. Briefly gandered the virtually relicless Orofino Mine just before Senator crosses Yankee Doodle Trail #284. #284 was realigned long ago. The new FS topo map still shows the old alignment.

We saw an ACE truck parked at Senator/#284. Figured we'd cross paths with 'em. Soon saw a man above and ahead. Oddly never made contact. Perhaps he was off trail. We quizzed each other later to verify we both saw him. Check.

#284 holds a solid 4 out of 5 rating for myself. Views galore. Decent trail for the location. Steep in a couple sections keeps the riff raff out. Soon after passing the Elouise junction coming down from Pine Mountain ( Benchmark GOOD ) we met the ACE crew of six sharpening chainsaw blades. Bruce chatted up a storm with the chatter of that group.

Soon onto my fav Arrastra Creek Trail #275 we lunched in the pines. On this gusty day we lucked out in a calm break shielded by the mountain layout. Bruce was weary of #275. Exceeded my anticipations. Probably a bore for alley taggers to hashtaggers. Varied terrain, several creek crossings, occasional pines, occasional torched areas, no bushwhacking or blood loss.

Pine Flat Connector Trail #9275 was the ticket back to square one. The lush green cattail environment took a beating from last years wildfire. Portions of trail are swallowed in tall grass with occasional tall red thorn whips. Near Pine Flats access has changed a bit over the years. We sailed through without crossing a no trespassing notice in the direction we traveled skipping off #9275. Minimal barking and light gunfire. Unrelated... Nevertheless, off trail in the creek just west of the community would be a better future option.

Joe put this Loop together using some of a previous loop, with an attempt to get in some new territory.

The Keegan Trail #91 is on some Topos, so let's get boots on the ground and see what's what. Unfortunately, when we got over there, the no trespassing sign turned us around. Did we turn around too soon?

Next up a favorite, the Yankee Doodle Trail. This follows the Longfellow Ridgeline with big views to both the East and west. Recent maintenance is appreciated as we ran into the 6 person ACE Crew on and 8 day stint funded by the City of Prescott.

I didn't have fond memories of the Arrastra Trail. I guess my memory was not that keen, because I enjoyed both the section west and east of the Senator (cough) Highway.

Just east of the Senator, we hiked past one of the guys we'd passed on the drive in. He and another were part of a club, whose signs we've seen on other claims in the area. They were sluicin' it up in Turkey Creek.

The Pine Flat Connector is only a hint of a trail. It terminates in another potential No Trespassing area. It was not signed in the direction we were traveling.

Great weather, if not a tad chilly on the Doodle.

Quick out and back hike on the way driving home, to hit the remaining portion of the trail we had not yet been on.

We finished off the top third of this trail as an out-n-back. The lower two-thirds is the highlight. This upper portion was nice as we had cloud cover throughout the hike. Arrastra has been good to us, including the namesake wilderness 40 miles due west!

We hadn't been up to Longfellow ridge for more than 20 years  so when two HAZers reminded me about the area we decided to go and check out how it was recovering from a fire about 25 years ago. Arrastra trail up to ridge has a few steep loose sections and we were surprised when we met 5 dirt bikes coming down the trail.

Coming back down I went to check out the lower part of Yankee Doodle trail which is massively overgrown and after I was greeted by a buzzworm I decided to turn back! A few minutes later I saw a garter snake dart off the trail. Other than the bikers we didn't see anyone else.

Nice area and there are "GOOD" views http://hikearizona.com/photo=362392 from the ridge and Pine Mountain summit.

Summer double-feature mega-hit. Sit right back and you'll hear a tale of a Classic Bradshaw Loop. It started at the confluence of Arrastra & Turkey creeks.

Within minutes a cozy old homestead set the character for our first leg of the hike, complete with a rare Arizona cellar. We followed the better than anticipated Arrastra Creek Trail #275 alongside Turkey Creek. At 5k the forest and ambiance has a Reavis Ranch Valley feel... trade sycamores for cottonwoods & apples for grapes.

Onto Pine Flat Connector Trail #9275 we found out this loop had more promise. We worked our way up Pine Creek Trail #289 around the eye-candy of 6,809. Dreamland changed faces. The lack of perennial water or absence of designer enameled publications to throw your money at may leave some running back crying. I found it wildly intriguing looking forward to each step.

The skillet started to simmer on the ascent. A front rolling over Mount Union dared battle against the mighty sonoran heat bubble. Finally around 6,800 feet the front started to win. We got much needed relief from the blazing August sun.

39 years ago I was stung by a bee and knocked off my tricycle. Lucky until crossing paths with a tree swarming with bees today. In a dull effort to impress Chris and Joel ( local bee haters ) with a video I was stung a couple times on the back of my head...lol Never thought much of bees until the pain surfaced... intense for maybe fifteen minutes.

Upper Yankee Doodle Trail #284 is pure paradise in tall pines with far reaching views. Our tiptoe through Eden was rudely interrupted. 5 hours of erratic lightning rattled our nerves. Rain pounded us wave after vicious wave. At times it felt like we were dancing in a blender.

If you enjoy the finer hikes in life this one delivers.

I just got back in town Wednesday night and didn't have time to plan a hike, so I asked Joe if he wouldn't mind throwing something together. Most of the scars from the last hike he put together had just cleared up, so I had a bit of concern.

On the plus side, he put something together in a seldom documented area in the Bradshaw's. I love seeing new areas, especially in the Bradshaw’s and this qualified. Also, we got to access them in a new way, via FR67 (Pine Flats Rd) out of Mayer. This road is a great alternative to the Crown King or Prescott entry points. In the morning going in it was relatively smooth and accessible by just about any vehicle. Going out, well that was a slightly different story.

After the 1.5 hour drive from the Happy Valley Park and Ride, we were hiking at 7am. A comfortable 66 degrees and the smell of pine trees filled the air. We didn’t get more that .25 miles when we stumbled on an old cabin. Even though we had more tan 24 miles planned, we had to investigate. The building on the property that was in the best of shape was the outhouse. This property had a basement and a well. It did not look like it had been lived in since the 50’s or 60’s.

Going counterclockwise we started on Arrastra Creek Trail #275. I was surprised to find the trail to be in good shape and easily follow able. A real enjoyable trail following the now dry creek.

Next, at the Corral, we turned on Pine Flat Connector Trail #9275. Another nice trail that follows Pine Creek, complete some water and assorted greenery. Be careful approaching the Pine Flats area with the homes / Cottages. Heading northerly we did not see any signs, but if you turned around in sections there were No Trespassing signs. The area could have been just ambitiously signed.

After a short road walk on FR67, we turned on Pine Creek Trail #289. Temps were warmish on this trail reaching the low 90’s. This is a well-worn track that appears to get some Motorcycle traffic to keep it cleared. It starts in Manzanita and ends in tall pines on top of a mesa. From here we did some easy bushwhacking down to FR9404V until we got to the old Dandrea Ranch site. Now it’s up a deceptively steep unmarked trail, until we got to FR261. Prior to reaching the area around Mt. Union, we had heard thunder for the previous 2 hours. But by the time we’d gotten there it had moved off to the east.

After a short walk we were on the Yankee Doodle Trail #284. The portion of the trail that we needed to do to get back to the Arrastra Trail, was 8 miles long. This trail follows a ridge line all the way and actually goes over the top of Pine Mountain. No more than a half mile into the Yankee Doodle Trail, the skies opened up with the thunder storms reforming. We had torrential rains, pea sized hail, and lightning that was uncomfortably striking within .25 miles of us. Short of one 15 minute break in the rain, close to Pine Mountain, we were rained on for 5 hours and teased with lightning crackling around us. along the entire ridgeline route.

We made the turn back on Arrastra Creek Trail #275 to get back to the warmth and dryness of the truck. The high temp of 114 in the Valley sounded inviting, seeing we’d spent the last 5 hours soaked, temps in the 50’s and low 60’s, and 50+ mph winds in spots.

The drive out on FR52 (Senator Hwy) and FR67 (Pine Flats Rd) to Mayer was a bit more exciting than on the way in. With what I’m guessing to be 2+ inches of rain, the roads were washed out a bit in spots and deep puddles would have made passenger car travel close to impossible.
