West-side loop around the football stadium

15th Ave north - Arizona Canal NW - Skunk Creek/New River south - Grand Canal east from the 101 to 27th Ave - 27th Ave/Indian School back home.

Perfect day for a cruise. Sun went down along New River Trail. As expected, the only sketchy part was crossing I-17 on Indian School - the sidewalk is usually blocked so you gotta ride in traffic.

8:30pm start, west on Indian School to avoid the last section of canal after 19th Ave > south on the 17 Frontage to the canal > west on canal passed football stadium > north on bike path to 83rd Ave/Skunk Creek > SE on canal ‘til 15th Ave - only real sketchy part of the night was passing under I17 IMO, rolled the dice on about half of the other underpasses > 15th Ave south for a while

One day I’ll learn the names of the paths and canals. Decent weather we’re having.

Been sick all week but managed to drag myself out for a Meetup ride out of Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria this morning. Pretty much a reverse route from last week's Harem ride.

Had to go up to Sun City today so grabbed the gravel bike to do a ride on New River trail. Started at Dust Devil park. I'm going to have to find a less sketchy place to park. Speaking of sketchy, the bike path had quite a few sketchy characters on it today. Seems a bit safer north of Thunderbird and Rio Vista park is a great place to start. I don't know why, but it always feels like I have a head wind in both directions when I ride the New River trail. Made it up to Grand Ave before high anxiety made me turn back. Had delicious yellow curry chicken at Jai Thai on 99th Ave and Bell afterwards. Num num num num!

Meetup ride from Rio Vista Community Park in Peoria on New River and Skunk Creek trails. Rio Vista was BOOMING with activity this morning. I was fortunately to find a parking space.

After work jog. Had a meeting in the area and took advantage of the proximity to revisit this “trail”. Started from the small water park at the Rio Vista Recreation Center and headed north and east. This was kind of a redo of a hike I did a couple of years ago where I tried to connect the New River Trail with the Skunk Creek Trail. Missed the turn last and ended up just doing the paved path as it heads east along the canal. This time I jogged to the 75th Ave. underpass, crossed a small bridge that still had water flowing lightly under it and then made a hard left onto 75th Ave. I was happy to discover that I only needed to stay on “75th Ave proper” for a few hundred yards before encountering Skunk Creek. I took Skunk Creek north and east along a paved path that ran between some apartment complexes and the dry wash. I was surprised at the size of the wash and how the city developed around it. Sometimes if I don’t really look at something I don’t appreciate how unique it is. Driven this area hundreds of times and never really noticed the wash as I zipped on by. The paved path quickly comes to Bell Rd. with an option of taking the path under Bell Rd and on to the north. Since my goal was mainly to discover how these two systems connected (Skunk Creek and New River) I didn’t follow this path. Instead I continued along Bell Rd to see if I could connect the dots to Hippy’s trail description. I went a couple blocks east and ended up going through a neighborhood to get back to the New River/canal trail. (Honestly, I am now second guessing myself whether this part of the canal is actually part of the New River Trail…I’m thinking that the New River Trail doesn’t even cross under the 101 Loop and that this trail is simply a canal trail. Anyway, when I rejoined the trail I headed back to the Rio Vista Rec Center. Nice to finally connect these two city trails. Hot out today…114. Could actually feel the heat coming in through the soles of my shoes. You may not think it, but it actually seems “cooler” to hike the desert than the city sidewalks when it is 100+ out. Saw a chipmunk and a squirrel along the canal, 3 bikers and 2 walkers. I did not notice if there is an option to follow Skunk Creek to the west of 75th Ave. Something that I will need to check on in a follow up visit.

Mary and I have had a hard time getting out of town the past couple months, so yesterday we took the pups on a nice walk on the paved New River Trail. We got to the parking lot just before 7AM and had the place to ourselves. Along the way, we encountered a few other walkers and a handful of bikers, including one group of around 10 or so. Weather was perfect and it was a good stretch of the legs. The pups enjoyed the new sniffing and peeing opportunities. A stop at a Starbuck's afterward provided a nice conclusion to the morning.

Decided to head over to Rio Vista Park and walk some of the New River Trial for some exercise. I walked about a mile and back starting from the bridge over Skunk Creek to just past Thunderbird road. It was a pleasant morning with various walkers and bike riders saying hello as they passed by. After my walk I rested a bit on a bench in the park then walked around the lake snapping pictures of the local feathered residents.

New River Path runs 13.5 miles from Happy Valley Rd & 75th Ave to south of Glendale Ave and 99th with connections to the Arizona and Grand Canals. It isn't as picturesque as the Greenbelt that runs through Scottsdale but it is a good option for in town biking, especially if you live in or are near the west valley. I prefer to run North to South snd, when time allows, take in a section of the AZ Canal.

After work hike. Parked at a QT near 79th and Deer Valley. New River and the trail were just to the west of this location. Picked up the trail heading north. Like earlier segments, this trail is all sidewalk with homes on one side and a dry wash on the other. Not sure when the New River trail officially ended. I saw one trail post (indicating 10.0 miles) several 100 yards in from Deer Valley Rd., but for signage, that is all saw in regards to the New River Trail. The "trail" (sidewalk) maybe goes .75 miles before crossing over to the east side. I followed the sidewalk on the east side for another .6 miles where it abruptly ends. There is evidence that from this point people take various paths through the desert. (Thunderbird Park is about .5 miles to the east and Sunrise Mountain (backside) is a little over a mile to the northwest). This is where I turned around and retraced my steps. In my mind the New River Trail ends when the sidewalk crossed to the east side of the wash. Overall the New River Trail is very unappealing. All sidewalk that doesn't really get you anywhere. Might be a nice option for bikers. It is flat and because of how it goes under all the bridges it avoids all the signal lights and the traffic. Wildlife was ok. Saw a roadrunner, quail lizards and a chipmunk.

After work jog. Continued on the New River Trail going from Union Hills up to Deer Valley. Trail was paved and had half mile markers along the way. Homes and businesses to the west and a dry canal to the east. Nothing exciting. Weather was warm with high clouds, slight breeze. Met 1 runner and 2 bikers. Saw a rabbit, chipmunk and quite a few quail, which included 15-18 baby quail.

Picked up the New River "Trail" as it heads north. Joined the trail at Bell and took it up to Union Hills and turned around. This is an official part of the NR Trail. There were mile markers every .5 miles with the NR designation. The trail is completely paved and there are homes and businesses on the west side and a large, dry canal to the east. Really not much to get excited about. I think this is more of a biker's attraction at best. Saw 4 bikers and one runner. Wildlife included a couple of squirrels, a chipmunk and group of ducklings (didn't see mom).

I'm probably screwing up all the anxious hikers lining up to do this trail (not) by using this designation for this hike entry, but I am going to record this hike under "New River Trail." There is no indication that this segment (from Glendale to Camelback) is part of the New River Trail, or for that matter, even a trail. New River trail signage ended prior to Glendale and there was no signage between Glendale and Camelback. In fact, the paved path which is the M.O. for the New River trail stops around Bethany Homes. Even after the paved path stopped I continued to follow the canal/Agua Fria to Camelback. The surface for this last mile was a mixture of unfinished concrete and compact dirt. Nor very pretty, but easier for me to jog than the paved path. Fairly boring run/trail, but it is nice to know how it ends. No wildlife, but a decent number of bikers (about 10) along this corridor.

Continued my "hiking" of the New River Trail. Went from Northern up to Glendale and back. Entire path is paved....which I hate. Tears my knees up when I run on for long distances. "Luckily" :? my back was in bad shape, so I was just walking this stretch. The weather was great and water was flowing that's about all I can say about this "trail". This was the first stretch where there was no signage indicating the "New River" Trail. There were a couple of signs indicating this was a city trail, but no other info was provided. Enjoyed watching the planes come in to the Glendale Airport.

Continuing my make shift run along the New River. Started from Northern and jogged to Olive and back. Not overly scenic...its along a canal. Noticed that they had actually done some landscaping within the canal, which made it look kind of nice. Enjoyed this section more than others, because there was a gravel section next to the asphalt, which is more comfortable for me to run on. Encountered 4 bikers. No wildlife, except for a hawk circling above.
