Relaxing low-key weekend backpacking to Knoll Lake. Big miles to get there. Enough for several trips, hauling chainsaws, paddleboards, camp furniture, and other amenities. A new moon provided outstanding stargazing at night and the afternoon winds were a bit strong across the lake.

Looped the lake Saturday morning on foot and duplicated the route by a few feet shorter on the board later in the day. Daniel managed to hook a half dozen rainbows and a couple bluegill over the three days. The level is about two feet down from the spring runoff high, but more than I've seen here the past few summers. I always enjoy spending some time here.

Couldn't think of anything fun to do at the last minute, and wanted to check out the continuation of Babe Haught north of FR300, so I decided to head up to the Fish Hatchery TH and go to Knoll Lake from there. The Babe Haught climb was nice, poked around a couple of little side trails. One of my favorite rim climbs.

Once on the rim, it was actually slightly chilly, and there was still a decent amount of snow in the canyons. The trail was surprisingly easy to follow all the way to the lake.

Decided to circumnavigate the lake, which was far more difficult than I expected. Not really any trail, and the slopes are so steep that you have to either be side-hilling or a couple hundred feet above lake level - which I didn't learn until I was on the 2nd half. That's a one and done for me.

Got back to the car, and decided against adding on any bonus miles on Highline.

The lower section of Babe Haught has been worked on some since I'd last did this hike. Every other section is the same. Once crossing the rim road and descending toward the lake, there are a bunch of new deadfalls and still quite a few big snow patches. Passing through each of the Eastside camps made me somewhat abashed to be a human. WTF is wrong with people that they can't carry out their own garbage, pathetic! Rednecks with riffles, I suppose. The lake was essentially full with every side drainage still seeping into the basin. At the north end, water was spilling over the causeway where a lot of flotsam and jetsam has accumulated. Took a quick break near the boatramp to enjoy a banana and cold beer. When we crossed back over FR300, a lone motorcyclist passed us, so I'm assuming the road is now open. We saw nobody else on the entire hike.

The winter that keeps on giving just keeps on giving! Here in the valley, the weather has been somewhat placid, but in the high country, little impulses of energy keep dropping a couple inches of snow everyday. Mixed with some warmer spring weather and rain, the snowpack is nicely consolidated. It's also holding a ton of water. But it makes for an enjoyable snowshoeing surface, and that's really all that matters.

I figured it would be a dry hike to the rim before we could float. Another overnight snowfall left a fresh coating on the trees for scenic views. The trail was muddy and we postholed through deep old snow along the oak traverse. No reason for flotation though as the exposed ridge still had plenty of rocks. Around the rim crest we switched to skyfeet and pressed on from there.

The drainages were flowing lightly as a result of the warmer weather and a briefly rainy Tuesday. That was no problem as several inches of fresh powder had fallen since. But the snowpack is so deep that getting down into the creek crossings was a challenge, but not nearly as difficult as getting back out of them! We picked the best lines and made it work though.

I completely buried my pole trying to measure the snow depth on the rim road. After digging out a little bit, I was finally able to hit the ground -- 58" down. Not too bad for the last week of March! I wonder when the road will open?

The lake is full, and I was surprised to find it frozen and snow covered. With so much snow there was no way to gauge the ice thickness and I had zero faith in it being safe at this point in the season, so we attempted to make our way around the shoreline. I fell through to my knees and that put a quick end to that adventure! ](*,) .

It snowed steadily during our lunch break and fresh accumulation blurred our tracks on our afternoon return. Despite a fantastically adventurous day, we opted for more entertainment with a first-ever stop at Pete's Place ... because yolo :y:

At first, it looked like there was a trail out of the boat ramp trailhead, past the pit toilet. But the trail seemed to come & go, and in any case is not numbered like Bear Canyon Lake Trail #112. It was obvious the lake was well down, exposing 50 horizontal feet of large, uneven, rocks. I tried side-sloping inside the tree line. Though not as rocky, it was steep, and I was not hiking as fast as I wanted.

Also slowing me down were frequent stops to photograph flowers.

Knoll Lake’s water ran out ¾ mile south of the boat ramp. I aimed up East Leonard Canyon. Normally, I canyon crawl down canyon, climb out, then take forest roads back to my trailhead. Today’s hike showed why.

Though there were sections of animal trail or bracken fern, or even a 200 yd. long meadow, there were several obstacles, and plenty of wait-a-minute vines. The canyon was slow going. It took me 1h 50m — including photos and puzzle solving — to cover 1¾ miles. With the high pre-storm humidity, I was soaked in sweat. 😅

There were also two major obstacles, near the beginning of East Leonard Canyon: The first, a tangle brush and deadfall that stretched across the narrow canyon bottom. It was steep, so I didn’t relish climbing up and side-sloping. After a few minutes of puzzling out routes, I managed to work my way between the brush pile and the right hand wall.

Not 100 yds. past that was the second obstacle, a tall pour flanked by steep walls. (Brush-choked and nearly vertical on the left.) In front, was a several feet deep pool, and the rocks were slick with moss & moisture. I might have tried it dry, but ended up going right, slipping multiple times on the muddy slope.

I figured East Leonard Canyon would start to flatten out, and be less brush-choked, but after 2⅔ total miles, I decided to bail up to FR 9715Q. It was still steep, but using roots and solid looking rocks for steps / foot brakes helped.

A ⅓ mile later, I turned left onto General Crook Trail, which is marked by reflective white chevrons nailed 8-10 ft. up trees, and spaced every 100 yds. or so. Usually, the next chevron is visible from the one you are standing next to. General Crook Trail looks like an old, pine needle-covered, decommissioned forest road. The easy travel was a relief.

I was only on General Crook Trail for a little over mile, past dry Lake No. 4, before turning north onto FR 9715J.

I’d been hearing thunder for awhile. While on FR 9715J it began drizzling. No big. After ⅓ mile, I turned right onto an obvious foot trail marked by white blazes shaped like the letter “i”. The blazes marked the unnumbered trail down to, and along, the east branch of Knoll Lake. A little over a mile, the “i” marked trail was the most pleasant part of my day.

I’m not sure what Knoll Lake’s % of fullness is, but it’s low compared to sat view. When I arrived at the southeast finger of the lake, it was crossable dry 200 yds. north of where the satellite shows water 50 ft. wide. When I stopped for a short break, it commenced raining in earnest. ⛈

Where Bear Canyon Lake has an informal trail on its east shore, I had no such luck on Knoll Lake’s east shore. It was slow going, negotiating more rocky slopes, both exposed shoreline, and up in the trees. Moving as fast as my old, fat, rearend could, it took me 50 minutes to hike the remaining 1¼ miles back to the boat ramp trailhead. Then it really started pouring.

On my way out, I stopped 200 yds. east of FR 9715J to search for the G.D. Bantz grave. (I would have hiked to it, but was trying to beat the rain.) Afterwards, returning to my car, it was in a ditch, 50 ft. away from where I left it. In drive. Egads. Thank God I did not have my brain fart on the cliff edge of the Mogollon Rim! 😆

The Babe Haught trail was pretty nice, but the loop around the lake mostly sucked. I ended up ditching the route to go cross country back to the trailhead. Besides a massive rusting old cable didn't find much of interest though.

Knoll lake is extremely low, I'd guess 15 feet below full pool.

Went up to the Rim for an afternoon to explore and see some fall colors. Enjoyed the fall vibes, played in the leaves, then decided to check out Knoll Lake.

Parked where the Babe Haught Trail crosses FR #300. Walked up the Babe Haught Trail, enjoying the views. No fall colors here, all pines. Walked along the east leg of Knoll Lake. Met 3 groups of campers, 4 kayakers, and 2 dogs. Relaxed at the central part of the lake, watching the sun reflect off the lake, the island, and the trees on the far shore. There was a cluster of trees on the far shore that displayed full fall colors. One kayaker in the distance was kickin it to Wu Tang Clan while paddling. We enjoyed the tunes, then headed up to the forest road and looped back. No other fall colors along this route.

I decided to escape the heat of the Valley and head up to the Rim Country and take advantage of the recently reopened Tonto National Forest.

We started and ended the hike at the Hatchery TH on FR 289, just below the Tonto Fish Hatchery. We went up the Babe Haught Trail all the way to Knoll Lake, and then did a loop around the lake before coming back to the TH on the Babe Haught Trail

It is a steep climb on the Babe Haught Trail up to the Rim. The trail is fairly rocky, but it looks like some trail maintenance had been done in the recent past, so there was no issue with overgrowth on the trail. Once you get up on the Rim, the trail is very, very nice to hike on, especially the section from the Rim Road to the lake. You need to watch your footing on some portions of the loop around the lake, lest you twist an ankle or something.

There was quite a bit of water in the lake, unlike my previous trip up there in 2018, when the lake was really low.

The temperature was very pleasant up on the Rim, and there was a good bit of cloud cover in the morning. This is a very nice hike!

After spending the night on the rim, I got an early-ish start on the hike to Knoll Lake. Since I’d already beat up my sedan pretty good the previous day, I opted to start at Babe Haught off of FR 300. Also I very much enjoyed the pleasant, quiet stroll through the woods and adding a bit of extra mileage. I had been to the lake in the fall, but never hiked the whole loop around it. It’s a beautiful lake and I was definitely the only one hiking! It was quiet with the exception of the main boat launch area around the official trailhead. Lots of people sitting on the shore, fishing and lounging. Also saw a few people kayaking or fishing throughout the lake. The hiking isn’t difficult but you had to pay attention because there were a ton of downed trees and you’re on a slope the whole time. I sent rock slides into the water quite a few times, ooops. I’d definitely return with a floatie and some white claw.

Having seen Chumley's snowbabe photosets, we wanted to play in the snow a bit too. A friend of ours came along. I wasn't sure whether we'd have much snow left below and on the rim because of the warm weather and lack of new snowfall in Payson last week. When we got to the Hatchery, there was barely any sign of snow and we could only see some lingering snow on the west facing side of the rim from below. So we left our snowshoes in the truck.

There pretty much wasn't any snow left on the climb up the rim until the trail started leveling out. On either side of 300 there was probably less than a foot and once we dropped down in the valley, there was probably about 2 feet of snow. But the trail blazed by Chumley made it fairly easy without any flotation, coupled with the fact that the snow was more packed down now. We did post-hole some as we were nearing the lake. The accumulation on the lake had melted away quite a bit from the warm weather. Could still see clearly the tracks Chumley left. Saw one other person on 300 who made his own trail up from the Hatchery and went down on Babe Haught. Wish there had been a lot more snow, but it was a beautiful day to hike in with great visibility.

After breaking a trail last week, and another storm set to drop up to a foot of new snow Saturday night I figured there was no reason not to do this one again. Figuring that the trail would allow me to make better time with less effort I set out to loop the lake.

There were only 2" new at the Hatchery, and the plow was on it's first 8am run when I arrived. Due to the southern exposure, I made it all the way to the rim before switching to snowshoes. From there it was pretty smooth sailing in the track we made last Sunday, despite 7" of new snow up top. Still an overall depth of over 2 feet, except in some sunny areas closer to the rim where there were signs it had melted completely prior to the latest snowfall.

There were even a couple of running streams, though by FR300 and the lake everything was still solidly frozen with no apparent melting, just some settling of the snowpack over the last week.

The lake is still low, but made for a great surface for snowshoeing, which went at a good pace. The sun peeked out a few times and provided some depth to the lighting. The return was uneventful and I managed to be home for a good Sunday nap by mid-afternoon!

Noel wanted to get her sister, husband, and their baby out away from the concrete. My brother-in-law was a late edition too with his couple of dogs.

We suffered through 2hrs of hide your wife rain/lightning Friday afternoon, then just light no-hood-needed-around-the-fire-misty-sprinkles for a couple hours after. Nothing else fell the rest of the weekend. Caught a nice trout before the storm, then nothing else.

Good times.

Fun little HAZ gathering on the lake. With the road open, I decided to drive up and kayak to camp, somthing I've never done before. I basically just strapped my backpack to the front deck and paddled across the lake. Apparently my kayak is capable of holding a lot more stuff than I would normally backpack with. This is good knowledge to have for the next time I do this!

The others arrived shortly after me and we enjoyed the afternoon doing camp chores. There were a lot of bees around, especially in the kayak, where typically a dozen or so were buzzing around until I started paddling somewhere.

Two other groups had backpacked in and were camping at other spots along the lake. While there were a few cars at the dam, very few other people were on the lake. Knoll hasn't been stocked yet this year, and reports from anglers were mostly negative.

Sunday was breezy and cool. Early season on the rim is always nice. Snow drifts can be found in many shady/sheltered spots, the aspens haven't leafed out yet, and grasses are just now starting to green up from their winter brown.

It was a return trip to Babe Haught with a great group! Seven of us met at Walmart and headed up the Tonto Fish Hatchery and started hiking around 9am. The entire area was choked in with smoke and it made for an annoying climb. The views were gross and you tasted smoke with each breath. With much effort we topped off and it was easy going from there.

We crossed FR300 and saw Chumley’s calling card. From there we completed the final 1.5 miles and arrived at the campsite Chumley picked out. He kayaked in. It was still early in the day but everyone felt lazy and relaxed. The hours ticked by and we spent some time playing fetch with Kiva. She loved jumping into the lake! Was really fun. We were also visited by Bruce & Denny. They were doing a big day hike and stopped by to say hi. Great seeing you guys!

We started our campfire around 6pm and settled in for the evening. A few people brought dehydrated dinners and some cooked over the open fire. It was a very pleasant evening that got colder with each passing hour. Most of us turned in around 10pm and temps got fairly chilly overnight. I would guess the lows around 40 degrees.

I was the first one up the next morning and started the fire again. Everyone casually woke up (except JuliaChaos) and we had another lazy morning. We slowly packed up and said our goodbyes to Chumley and started the hike out around 11am. The return was very relaxed. All the smoke cleared up too so the views were wonderful. We were back to the TH around 1pm and headed back to Phoenix.

This was a really nice & chill trip. Sometimes it’s nice taking it easy and enjoying your surroundings. Knoll Lake is a great spot for kicking back and relaxing. Thanks everyone for coming out it was a fun trip!

Me and the Turtle hoofed it to the high country. Denny had never been on the Horton Springs #292 to the Rim or the Babe Haught Trail. I through together a loop that got these 2 in, plus a section of the Highline I had not done and took us for a visit to the HAZlings at Knoll Lake.

Started from the Hatchery going east on the Highline Trail #31 and made a wrong turn right off the bat. After crossing the Creek, you can see were they have blocked off the old trail and rerouted it. We took the well worn path to the right, thinking it's skirt around a hill. When it fizzled out, we back tracked and saw the reroute went to the Left (North).

There was a prescribed burn on top of the Rim and with winds from the Northeast, it was quite smoky. The closer we got to Horton Spring, the thicker it got. At one point we thought about turning around and establishing a plan B to the top. The winds changed slightly, making it bearable. We stopped and enjoyed the empty spring area for a moment. There is a huge conifer that's been uprooted and lies across the creek, 50ft south of the spring. There must have been some high winds up here.

The climb up the Horton Springs # 292 to the Rim is a steep one. The trail for the most part is easy to follow. It's cairned most of the way. Where the lower portion starts exactly, it a bit of a mystery to me, but loading one of the tracks on site, gets you to where you can follow it. The climb from the spring to the top is 1250' of AEG in 1 mile.

Up top, we changed our plans a bit. The sign at FR300 (not the one Chumley leaves all over the woods) shows arrows both ways, as if this trail continues north of FR300. None of the TOPOs I've seen, show a trail on this side, but what the heck that's the general direction we're going anyway. It was trailish for 100 yds or so, but was easy walking.

We trecked North crossing Turkey Canyon and Gentry Canyon. The canyon bottoms were a bit muddy and there was still snow is spots, So we opted for some cross country bushwhacking and some of the undocumented FR's.

We stopped at Double Cabin to check the area out. We were both amazed at the size of the timbers they used and wondered how they were able to lift them. This place was built in 1950 and really wasn't much to look at, back then :next: [ photo ] .

Walking away from the area, Denny noticed an animal walking on the other side of the environmental fencing. We were able to sneak around to the other side of the fence and wait for the animal to come to us. When it snuck through the fence, we got up to check it out. :next: Video :next: [ youtube video ]

Only the second one I've seen in AZ.

After a stop at the O'Haco lookout , we started our descent into Leonard Canyon towards Knoll Lake. We took the East side of the lake to get to HAZCamp. I was expecting a trail on this side of the lake. It was there in only spots.

Captain Chums greeted us from the lake while on-board his Kayak, the SS HAZBAG.

We stopped and chewed the fat for an hour with all that were awake. Great to see them all again. I sampled some of Brewmaster Julia's concoctions. It was around this time that Liz blew a 51. Quite impressive!

Denny and I scurried off down the Babe Haught Trail to complete our loop back at the Hatchery. A fun day with perfect weather/temps.

Thanks for the Hike Turtle!
