Went and hiked the trail the best I could with two hiking buddies. I think I missed read the hike discription or missed a turn off. A great day, and great hike, but it will take more research.

Hiked from the Bull Canyon trailhead to a couple of these mines just west of Deep Creek. Adits were rock solid with no timbers or shoring. One was quite deep, while the other was more shallow, but chocked full of carnotite leeching through the walls. Lots of interesting rocks outside the mines show evidence of interaction with mineralizing fluids depositing all manner of useful elements in distinct layers. The hike was easy and uneventful save a few spots in which the old road was overgrown enough with manzanita and the like to complicate passage. I was somewhat disturbed to see cattle grazing within the wilderness area, is that legal?

Maybe some day I'll make it all the way to Moody Point, but I doubt it...

Great weather had me setting up camp in the Sierra Ancha so I could knock out a few hikes on my wish list and add another. Doubtfull anyone would find this now without the research Oregon did along with the gps route. Thanks guys, wonderful rugged area lets your mind wander.

got to tag along with the boys on this interesting and scenic piece of the sierra anchas
rocky drive to bull canyon trailhead, with a stop at an overlook into the coon creek ruins
took deep creek trail, then off trail across a mesa, which featured a tank and a corral
then along an old mining road to the two donna lee uranium mines
both shafts seemed in good condition
went in about 15 feet, but a funny smell and a lot of flies didn't entice me to go in further
on the way back, dropped into deep creek on a nice set of switchbacks
went down canyon about a quarter mile, where we found a 50+ foot dropoff with a small waterfall and a good sized pool at the bottom
no way to get down it without gear
found webbing anchored around big rocks with rap rings so someone has done it
had lunch here and had to be content with looking down deep creek canyon at the spires and hoodoos
it would be way cool to go down there
headed back up and out
very nice day for this, in january no less
had fun exploring with some pretty good guys
nice to meet varmit (tim) :) and see the others again
thanks for including me in this one!
now i have about a dozen more hikes to put on the list ;)
will adjust stats when other tracks are posted

This was a repeat of a hike I did back in April, 2013, into Deep Creek Canyon above where it dumps in to Bull Canyon. This time I brought 5 friends thanks to Grasshopper's hike planning. The drive up FR203A to the Bull Canyon Th can be a little frightening if you have a fear of heights and meet another vehicle coming the opposite direction. But I just kept reminding myself that this was nothing compared to the time I rode out of Miles TH in the Superstitions with friendofThunderGod at the wheel. We stopped at an overlook off of FR203A on the way to the Bull Canyon TH to take a look at the Coon Creek Ruins far below and enjoy the views. Then it was on to the trailhead. It was a short hike along Deep Creek Trail #128 to the start of the off trail section of this hike. We stopped by Mesa Tank which was lower than it had been in April, 2013. It appears to be on its way to filling up with sediment and becoming a marsh. Then on to the picturesque ancient corral. This area is still being actively used for cattle ranching which helps keep trails open through the patches of brush on the mesa.

On our way down a side ravine on the old mining road we were treated to the view of a large troop of Coatimundi on the opposite wall of the cliff sided ravine. There were at least a dozen but maybe as many as 20. They were tightly bunched together when I first spotted them with all there faces pointed towards us staring at us across the ravine. The white markings around their eyes really stood out in the bright morning sun and looked like they were all wearing white goggles. It was this feature that first caught my eye. As I fumbled to get my camera out of its case they started to move off in single file following a tiny ledge in the cliff and then started to scatter with some continuing along the ledge and others climbing up the hillside. This was the highlight of the hike for me because it was my first ever sighting of Coatimundi.

We continued along the old mining road to see the two Donna Lee uranium adits then took a side trip down the bottom of the canyon on the way back. I hadn't ventured more than a 100 yds down the canyon bottom on my last trip and hoped we could make it through the deep slotted section of the canyon visible below the second adit. Unfortunately we didn't get very far before being stopped by a high pour off that could only be down climbed by rappelling - something I prefer to leave to the Canyoneering folks who have obviously been here before based on the webbing left wrapped around large rocks at the top.

On the return hike I separated from the group and took a "short cut" up to the mesa to explore another area on the way back. Didn't find much, just a lot of brush which I was able to negotiate by following cow footprints left when it was muddy. I knew they were probably heading for the tank and would know the best way to get through the brush. I did cross the top end of a drainage with patches of water pooled in the slick rock. This drainage becomes quite large turning into a small canyon which enters Bull Canyon just above Deep Creek. A place to explore next time. After a couple of "What's that over there" side trips I made it back to the trailhead just a few minutes behind the rest of the group.

I had previously entered this hike on my HAZ "wish list" back in April'13, shortly after Oregon Hiker wrote-up this mostly off-trail hike which goes in from the Bull Canyon TH at the end of FR203A. I had been awaiting a good opportunity to plan this hike as a group hike to introduce others to another most interesting area of our Sierra Ancha Wilderness with 1950's uranium mining, old ranching history, as well as a very scenic, rugged upper section of Deep Creek Canyon to visit.

Mnlumberjack's winter escape (from MN) back to his second home here in Arizona along with an earlier discussion with Jack regarding us getting together again, prompted me to begin the initial planning back in early Jan'15 for this group hike. With six of us interested in going, it became more of a logistics issue for carpooling / driving and the need to select a satisfactory date all six of us were available..then there was the needed cooperation of Mother Nature in our AZ Winter month hiking at a altitude range of around 5000 feet. :sweat:

All the logistics and our needed cooperation with Mother Nature worked out well and from reading the others triplogs, I do believe we six had a rewarding and fun day.. I know I did! :D

Jack- good to visit with you again and thanks for driving the required second vehicle;
Larry- a bonus having you, the author of this Upper Deep Creek hike & thanks for also driving;
Kelly- always enjoyable to have you join-in;
Tim- nice to have met your acquaintance back in mid-Dec'14 & thanks for joining us on this one;
Mike- nice to meet you and welcome to our amAZing state;

This was a great hike for my first triplog post! I was really happy to be a part of this fantastic outing in the Sierra Ancha Wilderness with Grasshopper, Oregon Hiker, trekkin gecko, mnlumberjack and minermike.

This very remote and scenic area has a lot to offer with sweeping views of Cherry Creek and rugged depths of Deep Creek in addition to some old abandoned uranium mines. There was a lot of evidence of deer, javalina and coyote that frequent the area. Our off trail route covered a variety of terrain with patches of thick brush, manzanita, catclaw and loose shale rock in many places. Deep Creek had pools of water scattered along the exposed bedrock.

We were lucky enough to see a band of perhaps a dozen Coatimundi along the opposite canyon side while traversing our way down into Deep Creek. Some in our group were faster on the camera than others...you'll notice I do not have a photo of the band!

This was my first time into this beautiful area but it will not be my last. There is a lot more to explore out there.. :)

I car camped overnight at the side of a 4WD road on top of the south rim of Bull Canyon. Had a fine evening enjoying the views as the sun set. Next morning I got up just as the sun was breaking over the horizon and after breakfast decided to meander along the rim overlooking the canyon below. Deep Creek flows down the bottom of this canyon - don't know why it wasn't called Deep Creek Canyon. After meeting some canyoneering folks headed to this canyon two days later I did some searching on HAZ. Turns out it's a popular place for some of these folks but they call it Waterslide Canyon. Do a HAZ search on this name and take a look at some of their pics and a video - totally amazing!

There were great views along the canyon rim and earlier in the morning the light turned Zimmerman Point to the west a dark shade of red. I never did find a location where I could see into the deep recesses of this canyon where the water slides are located - I don't like getting too close to the edges of crumbly cliffs. I enjoyed lunch sitting on a rock bench on a high cliff overlooking the mouth of Bull Canyon where it dumps into Cherry Creek Canyon then headed back to the car.

Went on a 4 day car camping trip to the Sierra Ancha to celebrate finishing my tax returns. I started out with two nights near the Bull Canyon Trail Head at the end of FR203A. Lots of great views and plenty of solitude due to it being the middle of the week and the muddy road. I went on a number of short day hikes exploring the area. I had made plans for this hike to upper Deep Creek before leaving home. While exploring the area on Google Earth I had seen what appeared to be the remains of an old road along the canyon wall above Deep Creek about 1.5 miles north of where Deep Creek enters Bull Canyon. An old 1985 Bureau of Mines report on the area mentioned several uranium mines in this area: the Donna Lee Mine on the west face of Deep Creek canyon and the Sue Mine on the south face of Bull Canyon across from where Deep Creek enters the canyon. I plotted an off-trail gps track on Google Earth which avoided as much brush as possible following what appeared to be either old road beds or animal/cow trails to the old Donna Lee mining road. After a night camped at the trail head to the Nordhoff-Hope cliff dwellings, I set out for Bull Canyon Trail Head for the hike to Deep Creek. The upper levels of the Sierra Ancha had a dusting of snow from storms earlier in the week which made for great views. My Google Earth planning paid off leading me across a fairly open grass covered plateau to the Mesa tank, an old corral and from there to the start of the mining road. This amazing road had been blasted out of solid rock for much of its 1 mile length - a feat most likely driven by the Cold War need for uranium in the 1950s.

The views of the canyon along the mining road were spectacular and locating a path which leads to the creek below was a bonus. The area looked like it had few visitors in recent years. However after getting home and reviewing some HAZ member's photos from the area I discovered one that was an almost perfect match to one I had taken in the creek bottom and taken only 12 days before my visit. :o It seems like no matter how remote the place is in AZ, someone from HAZ has been there before.
