our plan for a utah hiking trip came together and we left from north phoenix at 0600
hit the subway in page for a nasty overpriced lunch - never again
bruce had picked out a couple hikes off 89 and i had a couple of hikes on my wish list along cottonwood canyon road to break up the drive
first up was a short hike to the nautilus, an appropriately shaped rock formation
backtracked on 89 to the toadstools
i've driven by, but had never taken the time to explore
interesting rock formations and a worthy stop
third hike was up yellow rock - nice to have a good track from @chumley for the ascent
there is indeed a steep path to the base of the rock face
we hit the high point and then wandered around for awhile up high
unique geological feature and a fun hike
looked like rain would hold off so we parked along the road and hiked through cottonwood canyon narrows
better than expected slot canyon
we also explored a little side canyon that ended in a box
returned on the road
did the quick stop at grosvenor arch before ending up at kodachrome basin state park where we had reserved one of the bunkhouses
good amount of exploration for a travel day, almost all of it new to me

Day 1 of 5 in Utah

The Nautilus
1.36m / 92' AEG
Nice easy hike to start the trip. To and through the Nautilus and then a bit of exploring on the way back. A good leg stretcher after a long drive.

Paria River Rimrock Toadstools
2.21m / 241' AEG
And out and back trails takes you to a little valley and flat area. This was much better than I expected. The toad stools were quite interesting, as were the surrounding formations.

Yellow Rock
3.0m 951'AEG
The first half mile of this is in a Canyon the mostly dry Cottonwood Creek. You make a start sharp turn and start climbing up a steep and sometimes loose canyon. We were lucky enough to have the sun peek out to light up Yellow Peak for a bit. Good views from up top and many different ways to return to the TH.
[ youtube video ]

Cottonwood Canyon Narrows
2.99m / 250' AEG
We made a clockwise loop starting from the South Cottonwood Narrows Canyon trailhead. It's a nice easy hike going through the canyon. We hit up a side canyon which was a worthy stop.

Grosvenor Arch
.51m / 100'AEG
A worthy very small hike if you are in the area

We were lucky with the weather the first day. Cottonwood Canyon road can be slippery after a rain. It'd rained the day before, but was dry enough for our travels. We only got sprinkled on once while hiking.

Day 1 of our Utah hiking trip. Kelly and Bruce did 99.98% of the planning for which I was grateful. We hiked the Cottonwood Canyon area, tallying five different short hikes. Great first day! :)

Last bit of fun on the way back from my Southern Utah road trip. Decided to take the scenic route down Cottonwood Canyon road, with a couple of diversions. Started with a quick stroll around Grosvenor Arch, then proceeded down to the Cottonwood narrows.

The plan was just another quick stroll; started from the lower trailhead - jeans, no water, etc. But obviously I got a little carried away and before I knew it, was at the turn to the upper trailhead. The canyon looked like it would still be cool further up, and it was - there's a little slot just upstream from the exit to the upper trailhead that's worth checking out. About a quarter mile past the upper TH, I decided it was time to turn back.

Walked the road back. Only saw one vehicle on that whole stretch; the guy offered me a ride, which was tempting, but he was headed the opposite direction so I politely declined.

Cottonwood was definitely worthwhile. Lower Hackberry looked like it would be worth checking out in the future.

Big miles and elevation on this roadside stop! :y:

Pretty cool arch though. Definitely worth the stop if you're driving by.

fourth or fifth road trip to utah with my friend from nebraska
sue and i left phoenix early morning, but got caught in the wrong way fatal accident backlog on I-17, adding a few hours to our trip for an alternate route
cottonwood canyon road cuts off some mileage on the way to escalante and was easily done by my 2wd hc vehicle
light rain for a few miles, and i could feel my car sliding, so not something to push in bad weather
more rain was threatening, so we only had time to make a quick stop at grosvenor arch
really wanted to hike the cottonwood canyon narrows - next time
rolled into escalante outfitters at dark

I ran away from the valley for three days with Katie. We spent our first day driving the Cottonwood Canyon road and seeing the sights along the way.

The road was generally in good shape, but a little soft in the middle and some slick clay sections around the middle. We drove through some pretty heavy snow flurries for a few minutes, but nothing accumulated. The narrows of Cottonwood and Grosvernor Arch were the highlights for us, but we also enjoyed our stroll to the Paria Box the next morning. It was cold. We woke up to 23 degree temps. Luckily, 4 dogs in the tent (yes 4) helps with the cold.

An amazing area. We saw two vehicle the entire time.

1st trip
since we were staying in cannonville again, decided to spend much of the day at kodachrome basin state park
had a big girl breakfast at rustler's while waiting for temps to rise a bit, then headed out mid morning
did the very short nature trail first
next, angel's palace, climbing up onto and circling a little butte
good overview of the park and some interesting rock formations
biggest hike of the day was on the panorama trail, at six miles if you include all the side trips
secret passage, cool cave and panorama point are worth exploring
nice views from the point
drove out to chimney rock and had some lunch
finished with shakespeare arch - sentinal trail
we skipped the grand parade trail
good sampler of the park
drove down cottonwood canyon road to see grosvenor arch
impressive double arch and a nice scenic drive
backtracked to tropic for some IDK BBQ - yum!

This isn't actually a "hike," but it's a lovely arch.

I'm thinking if I ever go back there again I'd try to hike to the top of the bluff and look down through the arch. I walked around to the left of the bluff and could see there seems to be a fairly easy route up the back of the bluff. Also, another small window is visible around that side of the bluff, (see photos.)
