Today was the day. Shaw Butte is my way to practice elevation, one hill after another and another and another and... well you get the idea. I decided to hike in the AM since it was supposed to be in the high 70s in the afternoon. I think everyone else had the same idea as there were hikers everywhere, plus dogs and some bike riders.

It was a nice morning, altho it felt humid to me as I made my way on the connector trails to get to the first climb. I saw a Starling ontop a saguaro which was an unusual site, the first of two today. I do appreciate that the roadway/trail is so much nicer since this is already a bit of a struggle for me. I noticed some new plants making their way above the ground and as I got up the second hill, yep, I was in Scotland. It was so very green over the valley toward North Mountain.

I continued up the longest hill and finally made it to the intersection with the towers road. Here I would get quite the critter show. I had already seen a couple squirrels and now there were two AND a mouse/rat in the corner near the rock and tree. I don't recall ever seeing a mouse/rat when hiking. I did my best to get pictures of the show they were putting on. After the entertainment I hiked up to the towers and back down.

I debated going to the motel but before I could make up my mind, my feet were heading down the direct hill, so I guess I was going; it just took a second for it to register in my brain  . It's a steep but short hill and then I headed to the old motel grounds. Just before getting there I noticed what looks like an alternate road that went down the side of a hill. I have included the photo. I've not seen that before. It is not a trail. If any of you get up that way, see what you think. I just read
Using a Harley Davidson motorcycle and liberal amounts of dynamite, he built two steep, windy roads from where 15th Avenue dead ends to a small peak he had leveled just below the summit of 2,149-foot Shaw Butte.
It would be nice if there could be some sort of plaque up there with the story of Cloud 9.
Customers debarking at the restaurant were greeted by a sign that perhaps only semi-humorously warned, “No Parking: Low Flying Airplanes.”
I headed back knowing I had the "direct" hill to get up but it's short, kind of. I tried to keep my head down so I wouldn't see how far up I had yet to go. I stopped to get a photo of a reborn Desert Lavender plant. I was fairly pleased with my pace up. From here it was clear sailing, other than stopping for photos and admiring my surroundings. There were still so many people out on the trail but I thought that was actually a good thing for their hearts and lungs. I headed to the VC via the dam trail; even that very short distance had hikers, bikers and a dog.

WATCH 10:13AM-12:15PM, 5.20 miles burning 848 calories, elevation 1371-2147. 35% Zone 4 Anaerobic (149-167bpm), 29% Zone 3 Aerobic (131-148bpm), 35% Zone 2 Weight Control (112-130bpm). Starting temp 60.7, sunny with some clouds and 49% humidity (so I was right).

Got in the old favorite close to home. A little chilly when we started, did the loop ccw to get warmed up in the flat section. Added on the western prominence for good measure as well.

Today was my test. I passed. I last did it in June. I have to say, it's certainly not a fun hike and makes me realize I'm getting older and it's getting harder but I was determined; even though it would be much easier to turn around after the first two hills. Coming back from that nearly two month hiatus of not doing substantial hikes is much more difficult than I could have imagined.

Lots of people out so that causes a nice distraction. One drone, two lizards, one squirrel. The Shaw Butte Towers were making noise with the wind blowing through those things attached to the towers. Visited the restaurant; still impressive. The North Mountain Towers were buzzing while I was hiking back through the valley, not sure why. Phone quit at 3/4 mark, must have not been on the charger all the way. I used my watch's GPS to link with RS to complete the route; although the watch gave me more AEG. After the phone quit, RS had me at Sudan, near the Ethiopian border  .

WATCH 9:55-11:55AM, 5.32 miles burning 645 calories, 1392-2195 elevation, 135 avg bpm/163 max. 50% Zone 5 max, 29% zone 4 anaerobic, 15% zone 3 aerobic. Temp 73.3, sunny, breezy, 23% humidity.

Lasso figure eight. It got almost too hot for Dese, but she powered through. She's a desert dog. Wetted her head down a few times. I guess it's nice this area wasn't developed.

I had to get the mail so I planned to do this hike on the way back. It appears they won't be able to fix our box for two months :( . At the North Mountain VC, when I initially got out of Tonto 3 I thot I may have erred in doing an afternoon hike, but as it turned out, the temperature seemed pleasant enough.

I hiked counterclockwise and as usual, as I go up I give myself the right to bail if I don't have it. I am still trying to get up to snuff with the elevation part of my hiking. I'm also trying to hit all of my normal city hikes that I think keep me in shape. Happily, I did pretty well on the hills so I felt pretty good. I also hiked to the other towers as it's so close as you wrap around the backside (west).

Once I started rounding the old Cloud 9 motel area, the trail deteriorated substantially and was this way all the way until the bottom on the southeast side. I tried to take a photo of one section that is now very wide but the shadows made it hard to see. Needless to say, it was very slow going.

I was surprised to see as many hikers as I did during this time frame; one fellow with a backpack and puffing pretty hard coming up that back hill. Sunday I saw a hiker with a backpack too so apparently folks have some big trips coming up. There were probably about 1/2 dozen lizards and I saw quite a few quail in the lower section near the VC. I took the longer trail back.

In the parking lot, I had my beer and opened my mail. Holy Cow! have you seen that booklet on what and who we are voting for this election :o . Sheesh. And of course, all the political advertisements in all sorts of shapes and sizes and colors.

WATCH: 1:42-3:51PM, 5.45 miles, 1469-2267 elevation, 138 avg bpm/166 max. 47% Zone 5 maximum, 44% Zone 4 anaerobic, 9% Zone 3 aerobic burning 928 calories. Temp 71.9 Sunny degrees and only 19% humidity :)

Great pre-superbowl hike. Hit the 7th Ave th at 830 and went ccw to warm up the legs and get the flat walk out of the way. Made the climb up with only two short breaks, felt pretty good about that. Might be in better shape than I thought. Hit the peak, and did the western prominence for good measure. Took the somewhat off trail descent down the ridge and took a little break to enjoy the scenery. Lots of folks out, but nothing crazy. Good track all the way.

First ascent of this short but sweet quick route. Starts off looking like a sad old high school party spot with tons of broken glass but gets better every minute further up the trail. Great quick workout without the crowds.

This is a practice/warm up hike to triplog 1000 hopefully coming up on Thurs. I found a cohort to hopefully join me for that. Meanwhile, I decided on this loop that I've never done before using the main routes. I bandaged up my heels and took off in the 48 degree temps to tackle North Mountain first. I haven't been up here since they refurbished the route to it and up it. All I gotta say is WOWSZA, that's nice!

I trudged my way up not having to worry about footing. It's still steep. Traffic wasn't too bad with a mix of friendly hellos and nothing. Wish the nothings wouldn't annoy me so. I made it to the sign and took the picture of the high five for completing the mission. Just to the NE is a pullout area that has an interestingly decorated Xmas tree. I grabbed some pics before sitting on the stone bench to re-set my bandages that had come off again. I tightened my shoe laces hoping that would keep them in place. I still have to get the tape Linda recommended.

And then it was down we go. I filmed a bit of it and got some pictures of the railings shadows as for some reason, I found the shadows patterns very artsy looking. I ran into a couple girls that were just getting to the pavement who said how much further. I said "not much" but chuckled and said, "it's pavement so it's not bad". Then as I got near the intersection to go west, an elderly person with a trekking pole was moving pretty fast so I got out of his way. I would see him later on the hike.

Anyway, it's a little longer than I thot to hook up with 100 and then back on the 306 to head up toward Shaw Butte. This south side hill is always a bit of a bugger for me. It comes in six tiers and that's how I tackle it. Believe it or not, I could feel the humidity heading up it but the cool air helped me keep a decent pace. It seemed just a tad harder only because I had done North Mountain but I did okay. I swung over to the western butte and then up the paved hill in the very cold air caused by the shade, up and around the main towers and down. The Christmas Palo Verde has some decorations on it that glitter nicely in the sun. They've rocked a bunch of this and that makes it a little harder to maneuver down.

There were quite a few hikers out today. I saw two squirrels. It was 12:30 which is what I expected it would be by the time I finished so I was pretty hungry.

Here is a video I put together of movies and pics: [ youtube video ]

WATCH: 7.08 miles in 2:53 at 2.4 MPH avg speed, 127 avg bpm, 158 max (50 min in Zone 5, 32 in Zone 4, 1:11 in Zone 3, 20 in Zone 2), burned 1106 calories (Hello Arby's Reuben). 48.1 degrees at 12:22PM with 44% humidity. I think the temp readings run low. Phx weather says temp at 11:51 was 57 degrees and 29% humidity. The temp and humidity must be from when I started which was around 9:30AM and matches up better with Phoenix weather.

Repeat of a loop I did couple years ago.. started at 19th and Sweetwater and headed up the small ridge leading up to the first tower and then up to Shaw Butte. Down the south side of Shaw and then up the west side of N Mountain down the south side of N Mountain and to the parking lot off 7th St. Followed the path along 7th to the Visitors Center and then followed #100 around to the S of Shaw. There is a cool wash behind the houses I followed for about a mile right back to Sweetwater. Fantastic weather out there.. not a soul but me on both of the 2 ascents, but tons of people everywhere else.

Slightly cooler temps made for a nice hike. From the end of 12th St we hiked over to Trail 100 then under 7th St. From there over to Shaw Butte trail and up the front side. We took the west side trail back down to making a loop to 7th St and then back to 12 St.

No time for anything out of town so decided to keep it interesting by going up the northwest side of Shaw Butte up to the antennas. Enjoyed the views for a minute and then headed down the and over to North Mountain using the top secret west side ascent. Hung out for another quick minute and then down the 44 trail. Got down to the parking lot and it was empty? Walked over to the connector trail to finish my loop and there was a fence blocking the whole trail. Lets just say I finished the loop. Actually almost circumferenced the whole east and north sides of that part of the park. Ended up in some concrete bottomed wash running between houses. Followed that out to Sweetwater and then back to the Jeep. Nice urban adventure

My normal hiking times have been hard to come by, but I was able to squeeze in a weekend trip. I took my big dog along and we did the Shaw Butte loop CCW. I had plans fro hitting North Mountain as well, but the pup was pretty worn out after SB so we opted for the shorter loop back.

Had a long work day, so not too much time for hiking. I thought I would give the western route a go, I had not done it from the ground up yet. I ended up parking in the neighborhood off of Sweetwater, the Church on the corner (formerly Fraternal Order of Police?) had its parking lot gated and locked. Got started about 5:30 just before the sunset. There are a few use trails to use, nothing too confusing. The trail seems to disappear about 100' from the western radio tower, but at that point you can just find the path of least resistance to get up. Took a nice break on top of Shaw Butte to soak in the unbelievable sunset, the western sky was electric with reds and oranges in the clouds. Made my way down in the dark, but the moon was just about full so I did not have to use my headlamp at all. I think it took me longer to get down than up since I had to take it slow and keep an eye on my footing. Great alternative for my local usual hike.

My wife had a meeting in the area so after dropping her off I went hiking. The trailhead is blocked by construction so finding it wasn't as obvious as it normally would be. Once on the right path it's straightforward to the top. I finished up in about 90 minutes, just in time to meet the wife without keeping her waiting long.

Another late day at work changed my plans a little. I had wanted to try this new approach to Shaw Butte and do a lasso with some of the trails on the east side. But I didn't get to the trail until a little after 6pm. So I ended up doing a simple in and out. Instead of taking the paved road for the final climb, I took the trail just to the south of the road. This side trail is very noticeable as you are coming in from the west. On the way back, as I was coming down from the final hill I found a user trail that was much more gradual in its descent. It was faint but noticeable. It headed north towards Sweetwater Road and came out just below a sign warning about speed bumps. The trail I took up was more of a water channel that was quite a bit steeper, and rockier. With the sun setting, the temps were very nice, especially with the breeze. It was weird. The sun was still minutes from setting, there were no clouds in the sky, and yet, no shadows were being cast. I kept looking around to see what was obstructing the sun, but like said there were no clouds. I guess it was just the acute angle of the sun and all the atmosphere it was shing through. I don't ever recall it being as apparent as it was today.

The pups and I took the Shaw Butte Western Route to the top. Then I wanted to take Shaw Butte North Mountain Loop all the way around. I ended up a little off track, and cut out North Mountain part of the loop. I was following the wrong signs. After finishing the loop, I took the Western Route back to the truck. I was surprised to see an Archaeological site with Petroplyphs and rock formations.
