Last full day of my road trip and I spent it just messing around along the Gila River. I actually went up Bonita Creek first hoping for more color just before it dumps into the Gila, but the color was pretty sparse.

But I encountered a really nice surprise. A large group of wannabe monkeys were foraging for breakfast heading downstream while I was headed upstream. Because it was a group, I knew it would be all females and babies this time of year. In the initial encounter, they had no idea I was there. I literally had a young one walk up to within 10 feet of me and that was just about when the camera battery died. ](*,) Somehow, I managed to change out the battery with that young one feeding right in front of me, but I missed the approach shots and when his head was raised. He and the others continued to wander downstream. Photographing them at this point was hard because they were all foraging in the brush and their heads were almost always down. So I decided to try to quietly follow them and hope they got more into the open so I could get some decent photos. I actually tried to get ahead of them since I didn't just want their backsides. Hard to stay quiet in the Fall with all those crunchy leaves, but I almost succeeded. One of the females began to catch on and I thought it was all over. Within a couple of minutes, she had figured out there might be a threat and they all disappeared into the heavy brush. Surprisingly, they didn't disappear for long. They ended up on the cliff face above me. I guess going up trees or cliff faces are their best escape moves. I managed to get some better photos from my vantage point, while they kept an eye on me from their vantage points. I didn't stick around long though, because it was apparent that they wanted to double back, come back down and resume their foraging and I didn't want to prevent that. I think that's only about my third encounter or so with these guys and probably only the second time I've been able to get photos. :y:

After that, I exited Bonita, hit the Wildlife Watching Platform just in case they were still around, and then spent the rest of the day hitting different spots on the Gila. Just a relaxing last day before heading back to the rat race.

We took a friend out to Gila Box who had never been before.
Spent the day with just short hikes out to all our favorite sites.

Bonita Creek - Out and back along Pipeline road to the water station. Showed our friend some rock art, beaver dams and had 2 young coaties run along the pipeline just above us.

Watchable Wildlife Platform - Walked out for the views over Bonita Canyon.

Serna Cabin - Down to the cabin and river for some history.

Riverview Campground - Parked at Site #1 and hiked down to the Gila River at Castle Rock. Swimming, good conversation and a bit of the Cottonwood Trail before returning back.

Last stop on the drive out was a visit to Spring Canyon.

It was a good full day at The Box!
Our friend was impressed with the whole area.
There were promises made to come back and see more of the area.
Fun day with fun people!

First was a stop in San Jose for the poppies that are covering the hillsides.
Then out to Gila Box for the half loop on the Cottonwood Trail.
Campground was full.
Cottonwoods are full.
River was running strong.
Lightning and thunder to the north.
Love this place!

Started from an almost full Riverview campground.
Counter clock loop on the Cottonwood trail.
Side trip out to the wildlife platform.
Watched a wild turkey trot across the trail, first one I have ever seen in this low desert area!
Along the way I made 2 short side trips down to the river.
I was dressed for November, but it got warm and the river had a good flow with pools so
... I had myself a nice swim in my underoos.
I ended my hike at the well known native artifact/ruins site for a walk around.
Always an enjoyable area to visit anytime of the year!

Amazing place to wander in December!
Spent the afternoon just hitting up many of my favorite spots.
The Gila River & Bonita Creek are flowing heavy.
Dry Canyon boat take out is closed due to river flooding and I didn't even attempt hiking up Pipeline Road at Bonita due to the creek flow.
I mostly just hiked to overlooks to watch the water and spent a little time down in Bonita Canyon for the December colors.
Cottonwoods are 50/50 and the sycamores are there, everything else is a mix ... beautiful everywhere.
I think a return visit will be made in a week for that Pipeline Road segment.
An afternoon well spent in the Box!

I never get tired of these trips out to Gila Box!
I formed a loop hitting all of the Cottonwood Trail and a little of everything else.
Lot's of side river visits along the way for a swim that never happened.
Temps never reached what was predicted, cool breeze all afternoon & overcast.
Spotted the only big wildlife up Bonita Canyon and what a good one! I spooked a Golden Eagle out of a cottonwood and watched it fly to the other side of the canyon. Only the 3rd one I've ever seen (all in Bonita) IMO these are more magnificent than the baldies.
Also saw my first gopher snake of the year, he acted just like a rattler hissing & striking at my camera.
Great day ... I'll get that first swim in next trip.

Plan was for a quick trip out to swim in the river. Got down to my spot to see the Gila still flowing strong with chocolate water. So i switched to plan B and went for a swim in Bonita Creek. Bonita has been flooding as well, so was able to find many big pools to swim. Encountered my first rattlesnake of summer under a picnic table I just about sat at before doing a quick check underneath ... yikes!
Storms hit the box on my way out and hit hard. I was unable to get back to town due to the road out flooding. Turned around and spent another hour at the box until the storms passed and water receded. Flash flooding is no joke out here! All in all a great trip out, very scenic today.

My last trip with Jayden (for now) before she moves away.
It had to be a good one ... Gila Box! One of my favorite areas in all of AZ.

Monday - Drove out to and set up camp at Riverview Site #1
Hiking, river swimming, campfire, conversation, laughs, stars, guitar & ukulele for day 1.

Tuesday - Bonita Creek hike, creek swim then back down to the Gila for a last river swim to end day 2.

Wonderful overnight camp trip, Thank You Jayden!
Happy trails my friend until we meet again :lone:

One of my hiking diet staples.
Did the complete Cottonwood Trail including a few off-trail paths down to the river. A few flowers here & there and the cottonwoods are filling in nicely, but the whole area still has that pre-spring look.
Sunset was watched in a van down by the river before leaving.
Will always be back ...

Off-trail across The Black Hills. Chased 10 deer ... cool!
Hiked around Riverview, Serna Cabin & the Watchable Platform at Gila Box.
Ended with a short one up Bonita Creek.
Sat on a perch over the Gila River for coffee & sunset.
Good trip today!

Finally got out of town for my first camping trip of the year. :) Only one night, but it was worth it as I visited the neat riparian zone of the Gila Box east of Safford. More water this visit than any of my past (though very few) stops in the area. Before heading back to Tucson, I decided to get the sandals out of the truck and do some delightful slogging in and out of the water in Bonita Creek. Though I don't hike in water very much, I must admit the cool water sure felt pretty good on my feet. :D To be honest, most of the walking along the road was not in water, but I enjoyed the parts that were.

Last visit (maybe) to Bonita for the fall colors before winter sets in.
Dropped down into the Orange Cliff Rd section for just a short one. Good colors, but Bonita is past peak up high now with lots of canyon bottom leaf litter. Found a great spot next to a beaver dam for a 3 hour hammock/sit camp.
Also made a few short visits to the wildlife platform, Spring Canyon, Gila River & the entrance overlooks.
Gila Box looks just Awesome right now ..... lots of gold color along the water ways!
No big wildlife spotted on this overcast, sprinkling day.

Wanted to get one more trip in at the Box before hunting season starts.
Payed for a site at Riverview CG to park and decide later on an overnight camp.
First up was a visit down to "Castle Rock" along the Gila River. Then a bit on the Cottonwood Trail ending at the Serna Cabin area. Went a bit up Bonita Creek then back down along the River Trail. Sunset was had at the Wildlife Platform before returning back to my campsite.
No big wildlife today, but lots of butterflies & dragonflies with still a good number of flowers left.
Gila was flowing strong, Bonita Creek was not.
Autumn colors 'bout 25% turning.
The weather was warm tonight so I opted out of a campfire/overnight stay and returned home.
Love Gila Box ..... wish I could live down there ..... I've asked ..... BLM said No ..... :pk:

TV & Mobile alert warnings all night that the Gila River at Solomon would rise 14 feet and be at flood status. Got up early and headed out to see it, it's quite a sight to see the Gila flooding!
Arrived at the entrance overlook to see the Gila flowing strong again, not quite at a flood status, but lots of chocolate milk flowing down that there river ..... definitely not a swimming day with that flow.
Made many river view stops on the drive in & out with several hikes starting on the Cottonwood Trail :next: Wildlife platform :next: Spring Canyon :next: Dry Canyon and many side trips.
Monsoon/overcast weather all day, rained on me half the time & the whole Box just looked Awesome today!
Wildlife - Grey fox, 2 javelina, many wind surfing vultures, millipedes, brown & black tarantulas.

My first time ever in Gila Box at 48
It was a lot like when I was 47 ..... Awesome :y:
Completed the entire Cottonwood Trail and hit a little bit of everything else.
Ocotillos are leafy green, a few yellow flower bouquets along the roads, cottonwoods are mostly filled in.
The Mighty Gila was flowing good, Bonita Creek was gentle.
Saw a coati and several bighorns, but all were far across the river ](*,)
It was a good reward day!

Also want to wish RW a Happy B-Day ... Pisces Rock Arizona!
