A friend and former co-worker who I hadn't seen in a few years was in town this weekend for a wedding, and he suggested meeting up for a hike today. This was his only free day, so despite a rainy forecast, we were going for it either way, but it definitely looked likely we'd be hiking in the rain. He needed to be back by mid-afternoon, so I picked something not too far away and fairly short. The original plan, if everything went well, was to hike up Black Mountain, then cut over to Peak 2431 for the Black benchmark, then continue on to the AT-6 plane crash site.

The sky was very dark, and we had some light rain on the drive there, but the rain stopped before we arrived, and we parked along the road near the dirt lot at the intersection of Old 87th and W. Saddle Mountain Road. It had been a long time since my friend had hiked (the last time being a farewell hike in 2021 when he moved away [ triplog ] ), and he was wearing borrowed boots that didn't quite fit, so it was a slow climb up Black Mountain with the rocky terrain. We passed a wild burro early on and started to get nice views of Lake Pleasant as we gained elevation.

We found the summit register, another one placed by Barbara Lilley, and the most recent entry was from MountainMatt in 2016. We signed and took a short break at the top and actually had some sunshine as we dropped down off the west side of the ridge toward the wash below. That was another slow, rocky stretch, and I decided to prioritize the crash site over Peak 2431, so we stayed in the wash and continued north, passing another group of burros along the way. Once we were out of the wash, we were hiking through more of the same rocky, cholla-filled terrain.

Just under a mile from the crash site, we decided to call it quits. We were going to have to drop down into a fairly deep ravine to get there, and my friend wasn't too excited about the prospect of going down and back up another steep, rocky hillside, and time wasn't on our side at that point. That ruled out 2431 as well, so we headed back the way we came and returned on the road.

The final tally was 1-for-3 on planned destinations, but I knew picking a rocky off-trail route for this reunion hike might be a little optimistic. But the timing worked out well--we managed to stay dry on the hike, and the rain started a few minutes after we were back at the car. I'll have to come back another day to see the crash site, but it was great seeing my friend again, and we got some lunch afterward and caught up a little more before he had to get going.

Dog sitting stuff brought me over to west side of town for a nice change and afforded me opportunity to visit some places I wouldn't normally go to. Early afternoon start so went for short summit hike to be followed directly with some food and drinks at Lake Pleasant. Parked just across from the Marina at the junction of 87th avenue and W. Saddle mountain and made our way cross country toward the peak meandering through cactus and evidence of burros. Going up and down the mountain was very slow with calculated steps over bushes and rocks/boulders. At the bottom was very relieved to no longer watch every deliberate step and could walk freely. Also the road was tempting us so we beelined in that immediate direction. There was a barbed wire fence had to cross over and then again to get back to the car.
Then we paid 7$ to park inside marina and walk over to Dillons for food and beer.

Fighting 40 mph wind gusts, I made my way up this grueling ascent. OK, well it was windy at least.

Saw 5 wild burro and a humongous jackrabbit. Just another peak in the bag.

Originally wanted to summit Black #2 or the BLACK triangulation station according to HAZ member Flying_Fliver, not sure what the heck its officially called because it's oddly and literally just labeled Black on the topo map. My initial idea was to snap some sunset photos from up there looking towards the lake and setting sun, but my plans took a different turn. During my approach I ran into a sign not far from the Lake Pleasant Desert Outdoor Center stating no entry unless special use permit so since I'm a law abiding citizen I made a detour for the summit of the real Black Mountain, well one of the 300 Black Mountains I've feel like I've heard of in AZ  I feel like land surveyors got a little lazy in our state after ahwile or something, I've heard a lot of repetitive names when it comes to creeks and mountains.

Anyway it was a very nice off trail peak to summit, very similar to Ludden Mountain in the terms of the majority of the mountain consists of large black boulders that are for the most part very stable and stacked in a way that makes it easy to ascend even with the steep gain. Made it to the first initial bench of the mountain and realized I wasn't going to have time to setup for photos unless I wanted a dark descent which I didn't feel like doing. So I dropped my bag and went off with my waterbottle and for some reason felt the urge to jog/run the remaining way up to the summit, not sure what provoked that but could have had something to do with the Watermelon Rockstar I chugged on the drive there...
Stopped where the broomstick marker was along with the register even though according to the topo map it's not the official summit, the real summit is probably only a few more feet of difference, good enough for me. Views up there were 360° of awesome and just like my hike last week on Baldy Mountain it was unbelievably quiet for being in such close proximity to civilization. Nice little hike to wind down the day, not sure if I'll ever even be home once this weather really starts to cool down, desert hiking season is almost here! :y:

Lake Pleasant Plane Crash- Black Mountain Summit loop.
Well, I hiked out to the plane crash. It was easier than I thought it was going to be. There wasn't that much bushwhacking. The way back, was a bit more difficult. Damn Cholla fields! After the plane crash, I hiked to the tallest area South-West of the wreckage. A quick 450ft gain. I found a spot to relax for a few minutes, with great views of Lake Pleasant. I then started back toward Black Mountain. Damn Cholla Fields! Black Mountain was a quick 500ft gain. I then hiked along the ridge. I stumbled on a well hid registry. This registry only had 3 visitors since 2010. I built up the cairn, to help others find it. The problem is, all the rocks are piled up on the ridge. Its very hard to spot. The registry for Black Mountain, is about 15ft North of the " The Lord's here" sign, and maybe 20-25ft north of Teds Petroglyph. I then started hiking down the ridge of Black Mountain. I noticed a guy parked out in the desert. Fearing that this guy was going to fire some rounds off, and didnt see me, I altered my course. 5 minutes later, gunshots and more gun shots. You loose a quick 700ft in elevation here. I then hiked to a small hill, then to my truck. Damn Cholla fields!
Great weather for a desert hike in March. There was a constant wind today. Depending on your route, I did a lot of rock hopping/climbing. Cholla fields everywhere, and the cacti are starting to bloom.
