Note: We also summitted Peak 1824 which was to the Southeast of this high point. Peak 1824 was quite steep near the top and can be dangerous for anyone who is not comfortable with climbing. All stats include both peaks.

Brian and I camped overnight at the North Maricopa Mountains Wilderness after hiking Peak 2182 the previous day. We stopped over at the Margies Cove Campground and trailhead to have breakfast and see what was there. We met some campers and learned about a Margies Cove trail and Brittlebush trail that we decided to come back and hike another time. Then we drove to the trailhead for Palo Verde Mtns HP and started our hike around 12:30 pm. We went straight up the canyon heading toward the peak and zig zagged as we needed. Near the top it got quite steep but the rocks were pretty stable and we just slowed down a bit. At the top we were able to look down on the shooting range to the North. The noise was a bit distracting and we wondered how the nearby residents lived here with all of the noise.

At the peak we looked around for several minutes for a registry but could not find one. We created a new registry out of a plastic jar and places it under a rock pile away from the heat of the sun. Hopefully this registry will last a long time.

On the way down we decide to take a different route going in the direction of Peak 1824. We basically took the ridgeline down but when the ridgeline was very rocky we dropped on it's South side and ended up at the saddle North of peak 1824. For about a 5 or 10 minute period, we were in full view of the house on the private property to the East but didn't think we were on any private property here as there weren't any fences or signs anywhere. Just past the saddle we were out of view and didn't need to worry about anything. We climbed up Peak 1824 thinking we might find some petroglyphs but didn't see any. The route I took up Peak 1824 was quite steep and involved some rock climbing with some exposure. Only proceed if you're comfortable doing this. At the top of the peak, we found a rock enclosure that someone made with what looked like a broken radio inside. We didn't see anything else so we decided to climb down the West side which was pretty steep. We needed to weave around a bit but made it to lower ground where the slope got less steep and safer. We spend some time looking at the rocks and found some quartz, mica, and 2 small pieces of Indian pottery. It was an enjoyable hike except for the sounds of gunshots which was basically noise pollution in my opinion...

Directions: From the town of Maricopa, take Rt 347 North for about 1 mile. Turn left going West on Rt 238 for 6.2 miles. Turn left on North Rio Bravo road. The name of the road will change to North Hidden Valley road. Continue for a total of 5.9 miles and turn right on Fulcar Rd. Continue for roughly 1/2 mile to an unmarked dirt road going North. Drive North for 1,000 feet and park.

Stats:
---------
Distance (round trip) = 2.21 miles
AEG = 947 feet
Strava moving time = 1 hr 26 mins
Strava elapsed time = 3 hrs 35 mins

Early morning hike out near Maricopa. I decided to switch it up. I feel like I’ve been hiking road-like trail a lot recently and this was a nice change. Got to the mountain around 6:30am. (Great directions by DixieFlyer made for a smooth arrival). The ascent was pretty straightforward. Pick your path. Took the southern spine to the top. There was a glass container at the top filled with what appeared to be dead bugs. No peak log. I emptied the jar and covered it so if someone wants to bring a journal and pen on their next visit, the jar is ready. Views were nice, except when I turned east. The air quality looked horrible. I’m not sure how much of that had to do with looking into the sun, but the other three directions didn’t look bad at all. I had lone shooter at the gun range, but otherwise I felt like I had the mountain to myself. I took a more western descent on the way down to take advantage of the shade. No worries. But I have concluded that I like going up more than I do going down. Temps were great. No wildlife.

I decided to head out past the town of Maricopa and hike up to 2 peaks that I had not done before:
1) Palo Verde Mountains highpoint
2) Estrella Benchmark 2766

Palo Verde Mountains HP
This one turned out to be a fun little hike. From the TH I walked across open desert for about 0.4 miles, and then took a ridgeline up to the summit from there. There was a fair amount of class 2 scrambling along the way, but nothing worse than that. I enjoyed the views at the summit so I hung around up there for a bit.

Estrella 2766
Now that FR 8002 has reopened I drove on it for a ways before pulling over to park. I could have driven further, at least to the junction with 9002C, but it was a nice day and I had been to this area before, so I decided to do a bit of easy road walking.

I started hiking on FR 9002 for about a mile and then took a left on FR 9002C for about 1/2 mile. My plan was to do a short distance across open country, then hike in a wash for as long as I could, before looping around and getting to the summit from the north. I decided to take a bit of a detour and stop by the azimuth mark. I saw a witness mark, but I think that the azimuth mark was probably covered up by a rock cairn which I did not feel like taking apart, so I did not see the azimuth mark. Once past the azimuth mark the terrain got a bit more onerous until I made my way to the wash.

Hiking through the wash was easy, but once out of the wash I had about a mile to go to the summit. Over this stretch the tread was not very kind -- there were lots of large rocks/small boulders and piles of rubble to deal with. A lot of the time I was taking baby steps going through it. This section slowed me down a lot. At least the climb up to the summit wasn't bad, as it was not particularly steep or slippery.

I reversed course on the way back, although I stayed in the wash longer since I did not go back by the azimuth mark. Normally I am not wild about hiking in washes, but it wasn't very sandy and there weren't any rocks to deal with.

Synopsis
I enjoyed the little hike up to the Palo Verde Mountains HP. The Estrella BM hike started off good, but the lousy terrain and tread the last mile to the summit, and first mile coming back, soured me on the hike.

Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the two.

Palo Verde: 1.91 miles with 785 feet of AEG
Estrella: 8.35 miles with 1,356 feet of AEG
