As I was hiking the trails I was wondering if I could be misremembering the trails that badly. About .25 miles in there was a trail that took off to the north that looked new (and out of place) and then the segment that hits the foothills off to the south and west definitely looked and felt different from what I remember. I ended up not doing the trail that headed off to the north, (I envisioned it connecting to the trails on the back side differently and missed the connection - if there was one), but I did hit the trail that went to the foothills on the southwest. Definitely, a step up from what I remember on my last visit. Previously, it had seemed more like a user trail. Now, the trail was smooth, almost rock free, with numerous twist and turns as it stretched through the hills. Perfect for running and biking. I ended up doing a loop out there, using a use trail to close the connection. On the way back I hit the top of Calderwood Butte and went down the backside. That part hasn’t change any. Nice views to the north and west. Going down the backside, the trail splits. One branch continues down and heads to the north. The other, remains at the midsection of the mountain and then eventually climbs and connects to the saddle that I initially came up on. I was slightly annoyed that I missed that new, northward branch, but it gives me a reason to come back. Had the hill to myself. No wildlife life and no other hikers.
Noticed on Uberdroog’s triplog that the trails had a face lift back in February. Glad to know that my memory hasn’t totally left me. |
