My first real hike back in AZ, and Bruce thought I should ease into it. Wally and I carpooled from Mesa up to Bruce’s cabin, and we rode with Bruce from there to the Kinder trailhead. The final half mile of road is rough, but Subaruable, although might be a little tougher after rain. We passed one parked Tacoma, whose driver had wimped out.

The hike down to Kinder Crossing from the west was nice. Trail was easy to follow, rocky in places, but fine. At the water, Bruce declared to water level to be higher than usual, making his desired crossing point deeper than expected. It would have been a swim, not a wade. We wandered back and forth, looking for a better crossing, and also found the two hikers from the Tacoma, who were also looking for a way across. We finally carefully scrambled across some rocks, making it to the other side, leaving behind the two hikers who were apparently made of sugar and unwilling to risk getting wet.

Vegetation was thick along the creek, lots of pushing thru brush. Lots of hidden holes in the ground, making for unstable footing in many places. We didn’t bother with keeping our feet dry, and the cold water felt good on the thorn scratched legs.

The trail was pretty vague heading up the east access trail. Again, lots of brush, and downed trees higher up. High cloud cover most of the day was much appreciated. Walking the forest roads over to the east access for Horse Crossing went by quickly.

Descending the east Horse Crossing trail was another adventure in almost non-existent trail, thorny vegetation, and downed trees. Climbing over some of the burnt trees made me glad I was already wearing black. Probably the toughest section of the day.

Once at the water, we splashed thru it again, then fought more brush to get over to the trail leading west. The climb out was on a fairly visible trail and mostly clear. Clouds were building, but none were an imminent threat. Again, once up top, it was easy road walking to complete the loop. It was a nice loop, but would definitely benefit from some trail clearing.

Spent some time in the high country to take these two on trails they've not traveled on before. The drive down FR95 is easy and mainly smooth and drive-able by any vehicle. FR95T requires HC. If no HC,park out by FR95 and it'll add .6 mile each way.

Down the Kinder Crossing Trail is a bit steep in places, but mild compared to what was to come. The first crossing of the East Verde is not totally obvious and always seems to take a few tries to find it.

We hiked across the camping area and it took a few tries to find a dry way across the next section. This area, at the entrance of Yeager Canyon, is a special area. We were able to find a dry path across.

That was the end of the dry and brush free sections. The section between the west and the climb out on the East Kinder trail was a lot more overgrown than in past hikes. There used to be use trails along this section. Now, wet crossings, crawdads and brush were the norm.

We mostly stayed on the faint trail for the climb out on the East Kinder Trail, except where downed trees forced a slight detour. The two track walk to the Horse Crossing trail was a nice respite.

The east side of Horse Crossing is now a cluster. I did this trail 14 years ago with Deb. I wouldn't even think about it now with her. This may be my last time. Blackened fallen trees from the Tinder fire become annoying fast. As does the trail hiding vegetation. Although climbing over the trees did earn Linda a new nickname.

I couldn't even find this sign from 3 years ago. [ photo ] . (I couldn't find anything on this group, or this guy, that fit. I'd love to send them this photo.)

The section in the East Verde from the East Horse Crossing trail to the West section, was non-existent. There used to be a well defined path through here.

We walked through the camp of a couple of fly fishermen that was on the lower beginning of the West Horse Crossing Trail. The trail up, was easy to follow with minimal trees to hop over.

Once up top and on the two track, it was clear sailing back to the Ru.

We were lucky to have clouds for the majority of the hike. It kept the temps very nice.

On the way back to Pine we stopped at Pivot Rock, because Wally said in his best Boy Scout leaders voice "That thing's going down!".

Good hiking with these two again... including Tyrone.

Every once in a while it's good to go north and hike. The temperature was nice relative to the valley. Bruce is showing signs of memory loss. He didn't remember this many downed trees, he didn't remember the water being this high, he didn't remember this much vegetation or course Bruce may have a different take on it. I suppose it's possible the conditions were different last time. We must have stepped and climbed over 100 trees but whose was counting. Definitely bring a GPS track for Kinder/Horse and if you're looking for poison ivy you may be looking up at it so familiarize what the underside of the leaf looks like. On the positive side the views are great, no one got lost, SR 87 remained open all day and it was fun exchanging digs. The side trip to Pivot Rock/Spring was good. The temperature had risen by then but it was a short hike. The rock doesn't actually pivot so you may need some WD-40 to break it loose. It was nice to catch up with Linda and Bruce. For the record, I had nothing to do with the Wally fire.

I had a route all drawn up to check out the Kinder burn from the Tinder fire and check out some new areas.

At the TH, I realized I never downloaded it to Route Scout.

So plan B
I'd do the the Kinder/Horse Crossing Loop that I'd done quite a while ago... from memory.

The burn is quite obvious as soon as you hit the TH. If you look to the positive in everything, the fire opened up the views, but there were so many trees burned from a totally needless act.

I got to the creek and there were a couple of campsites in use. A hi and a wave returned blank stares.
For the most part there are use trails to follow in the creek bed. I made my way over to the Kinder Crossing East section and made my way up the other side of the canyon. This trail is relatively easy to follow to the top.

From here, It is a couple of FR's to get to the Horse Crossing Trail. There's a sign out by the road that points to where the trail begins, but is is not very obvious. I followed an old 2 track, thinking that was the way to the trail, but when I got close to the rim, it didn't look right. I went off trail to the north until I got to the correct area. It was faint, but I picked up the trail.

Once back in ECC, the trail became more overgrown. I couldn't find the spot to cross to keep my feet dry, so I just plodded across. I made a stop at the pools by the campsite at the bottom of Horse Creek Crossing and then made my way up. The burn here looked to be worse.

Up top and on another FR, I made a call to take a short cut back to the car. I was recording the track I was hiking, so I could see where I started and where I needed to go. But there were no maps on the phone. I knew this wasn't what I was looking to do, when I could see the canyon rim above me across the way. This actually was one of the cool parts of the day. I decided to follow it down and see how far I could get. I made it close to ECC, before hitting a 40' dryfall. It looked like I could have gotten around to the right, but being alone and needing to get back because we had friends coming over to watch the game (damn Suns), I bailed. A steep scurry to the top of the canyon, and I was back to the car.

Took Mack's Crossing over to the far rim and SW on FR137 to drop in at Horse Crossing, then downstream along scenic ECC. Fairly easy walking for the most part and not too brushy. The Tinder fire 2 years ago caused lots of damage but there's still plenty of beauty in the canyon.

As I was returning downstream to Mack's I was amazed to see a large pickup inching its way down the east side road above me, and we arrived at the crossing at the same time. They had started down from the rim and eventually couldn't back uphill or turn around - you guessed it, "our GPS told us this was a shortcut". They were able to turn around in the creek, hopefully they made it back up and out.

A nice and easy day with a friend and the pups enjoying a groomed trail and exploring another new stretch of ECC.
Once down in the canyon the trail pretty much disappears due to the incredibly dense green vegetation and abundance of water which made walking directly in the creek itself the best method of travel.
Had to take cover in a Coconino sandstone alcove to take refuge from the storm, nothing crazy just a solid half hour of decent precipitation with nearby lightning.
Instead of the out and back we proceeded to a nice horseshoe bend with a sweet ridge that looked doable on topo, quick scan with the binos and the top cliff band made me leery but a nice game path easily weaved through all of it and we were back on top in a jiffy.

Planned on doing a loop utilizing the Kinder and Horse Crossing trails across East Clear Creek. From what I had read, I didn't expect to find a route at all on the two eastern trails, but was pleasantly surprised to find both trailheads signed and both trails well-marked, well-traveled, and well-maintained.

I didn't remember there being so much water, but didn't realize how much higher it was until getting home and looking at photos from previous trips. I'm not sure where the water is coming from--it hasn't rained up there in several days, so it wasn't recent storm runoff, and the reservoir is nearly empty and is not feeding the creek. Whereas previous trips you could cross the creek by rock-hopping, this time required wading in water over waist deep and fighting a surprisingly strong current. The strong current resulted in a dangerous mishap to one of us, but I'll let him explain it in his own triplog.

The roads used to make the loop connections to the two trails are pretty boring but go by fairly quickly. We missed where the trail crosses the creek at Horse Crossing, but managed to get across just about where it starts heading up the east side. I went back to find where we were supposed to cross and found the spot, but there is no way I would have tried to cross there. The depth and current made it unsafe. Where we crossed was a bit wider and just shallow enough to keep the boys dry. Which was important as the water was Colorado River cold. 9L and I both had numb legs and feet after crossing -- after just 15-20 seconds in the water. I know it was not over 55, and may have been in the upper 40s. That was very surprising to me for mid-summer up there!

All in all a great day though. Better than the other hike alternative proposed for this weekend!

Nice day spent in the high country. Our original plan was to follow East Clear Creek to the north and return via the Horse Crossing Trail. We started hiking up the creek and found the vegetation very thick and difficult. On top of the that the creek was flowing high and fast. We decided to change our plan and make a loop using forest roads. This turned out to be a great option. This loop involved Kinder Crossing and Horse Crossing. We had to cross the creek twice and the water came up to our thighs. It was very cold, my legs were numb by the time I reached the other side. Besides that everything was straightforward. The trails leading to and from both crossings are in good shape and easy to follow. They're steep though. Nice day in the cooler temps!

Drove up to the rim Friday afternoon. Very peaceful, almost no traffic. Got to Horse Crossing with no trouble, only had about an hour before dark, so I headed down the horse crossing trail and a short distance down ECC before finding a nice place to camp out and read a book.

Night was pleasantly warm. The next day I felt the humidity and it rained twice for about 40 minutes in total. I found a nice overhang to wait out the longer shower. There was a bit of bushwhacking to get to Mack's crossing and a bit more that final push to get to Leonard. ECC sure looked good @ Leonard, I wished my plans were to continue down as it kept getting better and better.

Headed up Leonard, camping options and water options were slim. Leonard was a bit more painful, but I made it to Victorine Crossing which was a pleasant surprise and headed up on the rim and road-walked back to the car. Due to the 2+ inches of rain on Sunday I was soaked through and through but it was very nice as it wasn't cold. Unfortunately the roads were terrible on the way out to the highway. Made it back home in time for a late dinner.

Best wildlife sighting trip in quite awhile - deer, elk, turkey, herons, mallards, and of course birds, lizards, snakes, crawfish, trout, etc.

Last minute decision was to loop hike the Horse Crossing Trail #20 Clockwise with the Kinder Crossing Trail #19.

Now that I get back and see I'm not the first to "attempt" this loop, I don't feel so bad in not completing it.... Yes I do.

No troubles with the Horse Crossing Trail getting down to the Creek. Crossing and climbing out, I found some faint trails to follow. Going up the east side was steep and loose in places, but no big whoop.

Now off to the Kinder Crossing Trail to complete the loop. I followed the FS roads around to where the Topo map showed the "Trail", and decided that was not it. Maps on the GPS were not any help either. Decided to walk the road a bit farther, but turned around when I though I was way to far north to catch the trail down for Kinder Crossing. (I just needed to go another .18 miles) I went back and checked out a road marked as closed for the possible trail on the Topo map. No luck. So I went back the way I came. What should have been an 8 mile loop, was a 9.7 mile out and back.

On the bright side, the hike in the canyon next to East Clear Creek was spectacular!!! Pretty water and great views.

**** 2 mile drive on Forest Road off 95 to the western TH, IS High Clearance. ****
