On the way home from a weekend conference in Las Vegas, we decided to spend a few hours exploring Valley of Fire State Park. Super cool place. Kind of a combination of Sedona and Zion NP with splashes of the Esplanade mixed in.

This loop combined two trails--the Fire Wave Loop with the White Domes loop. The geology here is fascinating with some nice, though short, slot canyons along the southern perimeter.

We went to the Sphere while in Vegas, which was kind of cool, but way overpriced. Spend $15 for the Valley of Fire State Park instead. A lot more bang for your buck!

On our way from Las Vegas to Zion we stopped off in Valley of Fire for a little more hiking. In the morning we hiked the Fire Wave and then the White Dome loop. We arrived early and went straight to the Fire wave Trail, we heard this hike fills up fast and to get parking arrive early. These are easy hikes, more like a stroll. We continued on the Fire Wave to White Dome so we wouldn't have to drive over to the White Dome parking area.

Fire Wave was neat but I think the walk through the slot canyons was the highlight. Lots of people encountered along the trail. Trail signs are a bit confusing and the park trail map wasn't much help. most guidance was from others on the trail. This is a must do hike but don't expect a workout other than your photo finger clicking pictures. Arrived back at the trail head around noon to a zoo of people trying to find parking. We will head over to Elephant Rock before heading to St George, Utah

Into the tourist trap part of the park. Managed to find a parking spot and decided to start with the seven wonders loop, with an option to walk over to White Domes if I felt like it. Never knew this place was on the radar as an international attraction, but a vast majority of the conversation I overheard was in various foreign languages (more French than I would've expected). The loop itself was cool, although I'm not sure I followed the official route up past Thunderstorm Arch.

The White Domes slot canyon was cool, though short. I also came to the conclusion that international tourists hold very little regard for pedestrians while behind the wheel.

Was our most difficult hike of the day, but still amazing. VOF has much to offer for the photographer!! We started on the "Rock of Gibraltar" side - very exposed - can't imagine what hiking in the summer would be like at this park! Brutal. Continue across the flats to the Fire Wave...got some cool pics, but it was a bit crowded. Continued thru the "Seven Wonders" loop - crossed White Domes road and hiked thru some more slots and back up to the parking lot...very amazing geology!! Great day to do this hike...mild 50 degree temps, no wind.

This hike was to fire wave and then continued through pastel canyon, I believe it was called. Very beautiful area, and as a result, many more people even though it was quite hot out hiking in full sun. The fire wave is a beautiful formation with bright colors. As we passed out of that area and into the pastel canyon, we lost most of the people. Lots of multicolor rocks to enjoy on the back half of this loop hike, which we did clockwise.

We were in Vegas for the weekend and decided to check out the Valley of Fire. Stopped at several of the scenic stops along the way, including the iconic road, for pictures.

Started the hike at the Fire Wave trailhead and did a double loop that combined several trails. The first stop was the Fire Wave, which resembles the Wave at Coyote Buttes, but smaller. We waited for the group ahead of us to take pictures, then took a few of our own, then moved on.

We proceeded down the trail, which passed through 2 slot canyons, as well as numerous picturesque boulders. Our trail then intersected with the south end of the White Domes trail, which we followed through the White Domes canyon. We then looped around the west end of the trail which ascended out of the canyon to the White Domes trailhead, which was packed with people. We continued along the trail, then walked along the promontory just east of the trail, which had excellent views of the surrounding canyons. We climbed down from the promontory and rejoined the crowds as the trail descended into the canyon. We checked out the old movie set from the 1966 movie The Professionals, but this area was very crowded as well.

Just past the movie set, the crowds vanished. We continued to the trail junction and this time went north on the Seven Wonders trail, marveling at all the colors. The Fire Cave was the best of the Seven Wonders, and we spent some time checking it out. There were also several other smaller caves, a long arch, and the Crazy Hill which we climbed around on. We then circled back to the car. On the way out, we saw a lone bighorn sheep ambling parallel to us.

Overall, this is a fascinating area, with beautiful, colorful rocks, several slot canyons, multiple caves, several arches, and numerous other fascinating geological structures. The entire double loop was only 3.8 miles, but felt like a lot more than that because we saw and experienced so much in that short span. The Fire Wave is amazing, but likely to be crowded (we were lucky that only one group was there before us.) The White Domes trailhead was extremely crowded and the stench within about 20 yards of the outhouses was awful. The crowds were completely gone just past the movie set (about 0.3 miles from the trailhead) and we saw only one other group on the Seven Wonders trail. Definitely worthwhile.

In Vegas for our anniversary and wife and I decided to check out the Valley of Fire. The drive from Vegas isn’t too bad. Only about 50 miles to get to the park. There is a fee to enter the park: $15 for people from out of state. Got there around 9:30 and there was already a line of vehicles to enter the park. There are over 20 trails and “destinations” to see in the park. Not really having a plan heading in, the wife and I picked 3-4 spots that appealed to us.

The first was the Fire Wave Trail. The wife chose this because she doesn’t think she’ll ever be able to do the “Wave trail” near Page and she thought this might be a nice replacement. We were given a map of the area at the entry station so finding the TH wasn’t difficult, but the parking was tight. They have enough parking for close to 30 vehicles, but during prime season that doesn’t take long to fill up. We got one of the last spots. The trail heads in an eastwardly direction and alternates between beach sand conditions and monolithic slabs of sandstone. The trail is well worn and is easy to follow. On the rockier sections there are markers to help keep hikers on track. There is some minor elevation change, but nothing too serious. There is actually a sign at the end letting you know you have reached the end of the trail. Another trail starts (continues) past this sign and loops back to the road you drive in on. It is called the 7 Wonder Loop trail. However, the wife and I turned around at the end of the Fire Wave. The rock formations at the end are very striking however it was nearly impossible to get photographs that were not peppered with people.

Nice and easy way to get back on the trails.

We only had a half of a day in this park which was not nearly enough. Also it was crazy busy! There was a lot of beauty that I’d love to explore…. On a random weekday in non prime season.

Finally made it out to Valley of Fire, and really enjoyed the scrambling around White Domes. The colors and formations are incredible. Sadly, the skies were overcast and didn't offer good lighting for photos. Saw a few bighorn towards the end of the hike.

Where? Vegas Baby! to celebrate my cousin Brian's 60th bday. A few others came down from Montana and we met them at the Golden Nugget. Thursday evening we celebrated his birthday at Triple George Grill northwest of Fremont Experience.

DAY TWO: We headed to Cowboy Christmas at LV Convention Center (I was able to replace my earrings that I had bot in 2007 and lost one while hiking several years ago on the Gateway Loop). Later that evening we went to Le Reve after walking 1.25 miles to The Wynn (and that was after walking from Westgate parking to the South Mall at the Convention Center .75 miles AND walking the bottom floor of Cowboy Christmas; that was just way too much walking for my 70 yr old cousin.
I highly recommend Le Reve and there's really not a bad seat in the house; altho we did get the first row and only got a few drops - yes, it's all about the water and some incredible athletes OMG!!! putting on a FABulous show. We took the Monorail via the Harrah's stop to get us back up to Westgate parking. It twists almost as much as it goes straight.

DAY THREE:
@adilling had posted a triplog and photos in Nov and since I was coming to Vegas in Dec, I put this on our agenda as we would be in the area for a few days. As we're tootling along in Tonto on our way to Valley of Fire State Park, my gas light comes on. Whoops, didn't even think to check the gas gauge. Fortunately 6 miles up the road was a Love's so we filled up and continued on our merry way. The drive from the freeway to those mountains afar is further away than it looks.

We arrived at the Park and were glad it wasn't being swarmed by others. I knew the one main thing I wanted to do was the Fire Wave so after reviewing the map, we headed that way after turning onto Mouse's Tank Road (named for an outlaw who used the area as a hideout in the 1890s). When you first drive by the VC you wonder where the road goes as it looks like it's going to run into the mountain but of course it doesn't. All we knew is we were in for a treat as we got closer to the rocky highs.

Had to stop at Rainbow Vista and get my camera out to record some of this. We made our way to P3 which is the parking area for the Fire Wave hike. Across the road and down into a ravine we went altho you can stay higher as there appears to be a few different trails that will eventually turn you south toward The Wave. We encountered some folks along the way as we finally reached our destination and climbed up on the Wave. It sure was pretty all around.

Connie sat down as her feet were hurting (I had taken her on quite the walk in Vegas the previous afternoon and evening). I got Tibbermode (my Rebel camera) out and started firing away. I got one person across the way to do a Wendy so that was fun. Would like to have wandered more but they really encouraged you to stay near the trail so I obliged. BUT guess what we saw: white butts to the west... yep, four mountain sheep. How cool! I had my long lens but figured by the time I changed lenses (since I'm not good at that yet) they'd be gone so I grabbed the ZS60 and grabbed some shots.

On our way back to the TH, we got to see the sheep again as they were making their way across the area in front of us... still had to use zoom but it was fun to see them for so long. On our way back we encountered quite a few more people. We took the high road this time and enjoyed the scenery as we came up the hill.

Next we drove to the end of White Domes road and had lunch along with many honey bees. I hiked a little up the wide sand trail just to check it out as my cousin was done hiking for the day. From there we drove down the road and back toward the Visitor Center but not before stopping at a couple pullouts and then east on Fire Canyon Road to the Silica Dome. There's lots of fun little hikes you can do in many of these areas. It's just so beautiful and we were so lucky that it wasn't crowded.

Once back to the intersection with the VC we headed east to go check out the 1930s CCC cabins built with native sandstone which are pretty cool. There are three of them and each has a fireplace. These cabins were built for travelers. It's a great little area to explore too. From there we went back to the main road and headed toward the East Entrance. We stopped and hiked up to the petrified log that is all caged and were not too impressed.

The geology is pretty fabulous all the way to the East Entrance where it opens up into a very large valley with Lake Mead being straight ahead but out of sight. We turned around at the entrance and headed back passing by the Seven Sisters where a wedding looked to be taking place. Next stop was the Atlatl Rock where there is a steep stair case leading up to view some petroglyphs. There is also a campground nearby. Last were the Beehives which are unusual sandstone formations eroded by wind and water. This is where the Group Use Campground is. There were several folks climbing on these formations.

And to think with all that I've shared with you that we did in 4 hours, there is still so much we didn't see including Arch Rock and Mouse's Tank plus all the little hikes we could have done. As we drove toward Vegas I noticed that same brown cloud that we get here in the Valley and it was the same thickness. I was a little surprised by that. But it goes without saying, I sure hope I get to go back when I can spend more time.

I have been looking forward to visiting the Valley of Fire for many years. From the photos I have seen, it looks like a similar geologic area to Coyote Buttes. I can report that is it very much like Coyote Buttes in many ways.

The hike to the Fire Wave starts at Parking area 3, off White Dome Road. You park and walk across the road. The trail head is marked. There's a big sign warning you that HEAT KILLS. The trail is very easy to follow. It is well worn and there are markers, posts and massive cairns place along the way. You can also follow the throngs of people streaming back and forth if you cannot follow the trail. It lists .60 miles from the parking lot to the Fire Wave and that sounds about right.

I followed the official trail going out to the formation. The sandy trail gives way to slick rock about 2/3 in. The multi-colored wave patterns start well before you get to the Fire Wave. This is such a beautiful area. The Fire Wave is small, but very impressive. I got there about 3pm and the sun was starting to tone down a little. The east facing section of the wave was already in the shade. The west facing section is not a beautiful as the lower wave, but it is still stunning.

I walked all over the area of the Fire Wave, taking pictures and soaking up the beautiful sites. I outlasted quite a few folks who walked up, took a few pictures and turned around. I explored the area, climbing on, over and around the main Fire Wave.

I hiked back to the trail head, but I took the scenic route along the slick rock. You end up back in the sandy area either way.

This place is absolutely amazing. The Fire Wave is a beautiful formation, with candy-striped layers and awesome shapes. The entire area along White Dome Road is visually stunning. The Silica Dome area and Rainbow Vista are impressive, as is the White Dome Area, just up from the Fire Wave parking area. The colors, patterns, textures are really incredible.

I recommend the next time you are in Las Vegas, leave the phoniness and hollowness of the Strip behind and take the hour drive up to this place to see a real pot o gold.

Started off the summer with a trip to "The Wave", coyote buttes, ended the summer with the "Fire Wave". Both fabulous examples of natures work. Few others around.

The newest trail in Valley of Fire is maybe the best. It takes you to a formation similar to the Wave.
