I decided to head out past the town of Maricopa and hike up to 2 peaks that I had not done before:
1) Palo Verde Mountains highpoint
2) Estrella Benchmark 2766

Palo Verde Mountains HP
This one turned out to be a fun little hike. From the TH I walked across open desert for about 0.4 miles, and then took a ridgeline up to the summit from there. There was a fair amount of class 2 scrambling along the way, but nothing worse than that. I enjoyed the views at the summit so I hung around up there for a bit.

Estrella 2766
Now that FR 8002 has reopened I drove on it for a ways before pulling over to park. I could have driven further, at least to the junction with 9002C, but it was a nice day and I had been to this area before, so I decided to do a bit of easy road walking.

I started hiking on FR 9002 for about a mile and then took a left on FR 9002C for about 1/2 mile. My plan was to do a short distance across open country, then hike in a wash for as long as I could, before looping around and getting to the summit from the north. I decided to take a bit of a detour and stop by the azimuth mark. I saw a witness mark, but I think that the azimuth mark was probably covered up by a rock cairn which I did not feel like taking apart, so I did not see the azimuth mark. Once past the azimuth mark the terrain got a bit more onerous until I made my way to the wash.

Hiking through the wash was easy, but once out of the wash I had about a mile to go to the summit. Over this stretch the tread was not very kind -- there were lots of large rocks/small boulders and piles of rubble to deal with. A lot of the time I was taking baby steps going through it. This section slowed me down a lot. At least the climb up to the summit wasn't bad, as it was not particularly steep or slippery.

I reversed course on the way back, although I stayed in the wash longer since I did not go back by the azimuth mark. Normally I am not wild about hiking in washes, but it wasn't very sandy and there weren't any rocks to deal with.

Synopsis
I enjoyed the little hike up to the Palo Verde Mountains HP. The Estrella BM hike started off good, but the lousy terrain and tread the last mile to the summit, and first mile coming back, soured me on the hike.

Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the two.

Palo Verde: 1.91 miles with 785 feet of AEG
Estrella: 8.35 miles with 1,356 feet of AEG

Peak 2766 is the highest peak in the middle portion of the Maricopa Mtns. It’s between the Juan Bautista de Anza Natl Historic Trail - (AKA Butterfield Overland Stagecoach Route) and Rte 238 (AKA Maricopa Rd).
I discovered the Juan Bautista de Anza Natl Historic Trail’s ‘route-between-the-mountain-ranges’ is known by many other names as well, and was used over 230 years ago to travel to what is now California. You get a good look at it from atop Peak 2766.

Surveyors went up Peak 2766 in 1936 and placed Estrella Triangulation Station. They also placed two reference marks on the very tiny peak. The actual top almost comes to a point. Very tiny.
To the southeast, down in the desert flatlands, they placed an azimuth mark for Estrella. I found the azimuth mark first as I hiked in from the southeast, using the original surveyors’ route. Actually, I used their route all the way to the top of the mountain.

The first 3 miles of the hike is in flat, hardened desert with minimal vegetation. I went directly to the azimuth mark with very few deviations from ‘straight’. There just isn’t much to maneuver around. From the azimuth, I had to use a soft-sand wash for awhile, before going up to a ridgeline. The ridgeline part of the hike (about one mile long) was all boulders, and was where about 1,000 Ft of the elevation gain occurred. The day was heating up by then, and the ridgeline portion seemed longer and steeper than it really was.

All four disks are in good shape and the three disks atop the tiny peak are almost within jumping distance of each other. The Height of Light wood and wires are strewn around the little top, as usual. Great views up there.

Two things that were not pleasant on this hike.
Gnats and gunfire. Every time I stopped to take a photo or catch my breath, I was inundated by those nasty gnats. The gunfire (with many echoes) almost had me aborting the hike. The gun noise stopped while on the first ridge, so I continued.

The hike back down the ridgeline and back to the trailhead was uneventful. Once back on that flat, hardened desert (the last 3 miles), it felt more like a ‘slog’ back to the TH, as I was covering the exact same ground again. No complaints though - It’s not often I can ‘hike-in-a-straight-line’, off trail, for three miles and not be concerned with things that want to stick me.

I had noticed this mountain while researching my Mormon Battalion / Butterfield hike ( http://hikearizona.com/photoset=32918 ), and just coincidentally at the same time mazatzal ( http://hikearizona.com/photoset=23232 ) did it. He didn't post a route, so I came up with an idea of my own: Travel up a wash / spur from the southwest to a knob, traverse northwest to the summit, return to the knob, then descend southeast to what is likely mazatzal's wash, follow the wash out to FR 8002, then back to AZ 238. ( http://hikearizona.com/gps=27625 contains both the planned route and my actual track.)

On the drive out, I was psyching myself out, thinking all kinds of bad thoughts about going it alone. :oplz: But once we arrived at Shawmut, and I looked up at the mountain, the peak highlighted by the rising sun, I thought, "That doesn't look so bad." :D

I started across the bumps -- is there a word for those? :-k -- separating the small washes, generally heading northeast, before dropping into the main wash. At 1.5 miles, I started up the spur. It was covered with boulders along the crest, so I side-sloped most of the way. Footing was iffy, and there was lots of cholla. (Yet I finished the day unstabbed -- not counting catclaw, which is assumed.) It was slow going. About half way up, I was treated to two trains going through the Shawmut esses at the same time. The final 20 vertical feet to the knob was steep, gravelly, and no hand holds. I used momentum to get up it.

I took a break at the knob and re-assessed. I looked across the saddle to the next 300 foot climb, and it looked even steeper and slipperier. Side-sloping would moved me away from the peak, and going up it looked too iffy for my abilities, so after taking some pictures -- great view ( http://youtu.be/sbMrHvs7Vuw ) -- I bailed.

Going down to the east was considerably easier, less bouldery, and with zero cholla. The wash had one small ledge, but was otherwise sandy, with easily avoided rocks and brush. Some of the sand was packed, easy walking, the other half was deeper, mushy walking. I exitted the wash near the first rock pile, hoping to console myself with some petroglyphs. No luck there, or the other three piles -- unless you count the petroglyph thoughtfully provided by the Boy Scouts of Cave Creek Troop 603 ( http://troop603.scoutlander.com/publics ... x?UID=3218 ) who managed to simultaneously violate the Scout Oath, the Scout Laws and the Outdoor Code ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_Scouts ... Scout_Oath ). :worthy:

I started walking back to AZ 238 along FR 8002, which is still closed to vehicle traffic. (If / when they re-open it, it is drivable by a 2WD SUV; a car would be ill-advised.) Walking on the road was actually slower going then cutting across the flats, so I did the last several miles cross country.

We took a creek bed from the east side and up a ridge to the summit. We descended to the west down a steep gully  and looped back on Butterfield trail. Great day and not too chilly except at the summit.
