Surely, I thought, the name comes from someone infatuated with Scarlett O'Hara, the flamboyant character in the film and book, "Gone with the Wind." Whatever, this perimeter trail around Peak 2075 was not Tara.
I followed Widowmaker's official route but lost the trail in a few places. Eventually I resorted to back-tracking and searching the ground for familiar tracks I'd seen from the outset. There weren't many. Imprints of horseshoes, a mountain bike's tire tread, boot soles and dog paws. Later, I compared the official route to my own and found it varied on the E and NW. I gather that few hikers traverse the north side. Most of the traffic is on the south, by the subdivision.
I did the trail cc, starting at the dead-end on Rose Garden Lane on the peak's east side. A nice view to the E greeted me from the TH. A valley, unobstructed by mountains or highrises, stretched out all the way to the McDowells, I could clearly see Tom's Thumb poking up. Industrial buildings along Deer Valley Rd and old mine shafts dot the N side, and the S side abuts a large subdivision. More old mining sites, gravel pits and tailings there too. Came across a phainopepla, house finch, a few Gambel's quail, a high-flying hawk and a small, dead snake. The fenced-off Union Mine, on the N, has a dark 75-foot vertical shaft and somewhere down there a 3-1/2 foot vein of minerals including gold. That's according to a website, mindata.org.
As for "Scarlett Canyon," who would know it existed if not for a large, gray trash barrel with the name printed on it? Mountain on one side, very low ridge on the other. Broken cement blocks, more housing popping up to the E. Maps show a couple of gravel pits around here. Found a half dozen folks on the S, all with dogs, some unleashed. I intend to give this area another shot if nothing else but to reach the summit of Peak 2075. |
