I was on the road to Montana but had planned to run up to Bryce before my drive north. I didn't want to do anything too long or hard so this was my choice. The great thing about hiking north from Sunrise Point is most of the people traffic goes right (south), thus I only ran into half dozen hikers for my hike.

The first thing that caught my eye was the trail riders going down the Queen's Garden Loop; they sure kicked up a lot of dust. After watching that for a bit I continued on my way. I took two little off-shoot trails along the way. As I rounded a corner I could see a rise and decided that would be my goal so I would get a little AEG.

Even though it was slightly overcast, it felt warm and humid. However, the broken sky would provide for some interesting light which would make this place even more surreal. I remark in the video, "I wonder if there is any other place on earth like this?". I also noted that it's one thing to see hoodoos from a distance but even a better experience here because you can almost touch them. Everywhere you look is fascinating and it's hard to keep walking.

Coming back down the hill the light was changing so the scenery looked a little different. I headed over to the platform at Sunrise Point near where all the people gather. I took a quick look around and then headed back to the parking lot. An older gentleman said he and a few others were curious about my license plate so I told them the story of how Tonto got its name. By this time, it was very crowded and I was glad to be on my way. For my reference: https://www.usgs.gov/geology-and-ecolog ... ional-park

The drive out was really pretty as well so I continued to snap pictures and took a little video. I guess it would be nice to come up here for the day to hang out. Today, however, I had several hundred miles to drive. I would make it to Idaho Falls. Along the way I would see two different fires outside of Fillmore, UT so I snapped quite a few pictures. Even though there were only two fires, there were several plumes of smoke.

It really is a beautiful drive that I had just done in late May with cousin Connie. The other standout item was Gunsight Peak, part of the Malad Range (Clarkston Mountains). Oh, the clouds were pretty cool-looking for part of the day as well.
I tried to ID the mountains along the way but I'm not sure how well I did. When making the video, I would ask google to show me the mountain ranges around a certain city and try to ID them that way. Some of the peaks were easier to ID as I could change the terrain on google maps and try to line them up with my photos.

The other thing I learned while looking for hotels on my android auto is the prices listed are online prices so when I called a few of the hotels while driving, they would quote higher prices. Finally one hotel told me that the prices I'm seeing are online. So, at Idaho Falls, I pulled into the parking lot of Wendy's and made the reservation for Super 8 online and got the $105 price vs the $140 the hotel was charging.

As to fuel, if you are a member of Costco, you'll save a lot of money so it's a good idea to know where they are at along the route. I only made one boo-boo where I stopped at the corner on Highway 20 at the Sinclair where the price was the highest I paid. I noticed that Sinclair's prices seem to run higher than most stations.

Spent the morning at Bryce Canyon with this fun, scenic, and crowded hike. Normally I don’t like crowds but it’s not often that you hear a half dozen foreign languages anywhere in the US so it just added to the fun. We went down Queen’s Garden and returned up Navajo Loop through Wall Street, which is the closest thing Bryce has to a slot. A ranger told us the three tall pines growing in the middle of Wall Street were over 400 years old and get less than two hours of sunlight per day. They were incredible.

The switchbacks out of Wall Street were hot and a little intense for casual hikers, but beautiful looking back.

We walked the rim trail back to the start.

The squirrels are not at all afraid of people so be careful with your snacks. We tried to shoo one off and it wound up jumping in my daughter’s lap before dashing off frustrated and empty-pawed.

Writing trip report on 10-15-2021

Still working my way home I put Bryce on my list of things to see as I've never been there before.  I've always wanted to go when there is snow but, what the heck, it was on my way.  I ended up taking two nites to make it back from Montana and Hatch would be my second and final layover.  I had stayed in Pocatello the nite before so I was able to get to the Park in the early afternoon.  I stopped at the Red Canyon/Dixie Forest VC and did a quick tour before finishing my drive to Bryce.  I stopped at the Lodge to go and find a map and route to choose for a little hike.  The rangers were set up outside so I made an inquiry and the ranger suggested this loop.  Good choice on his part altho he was a little bit arrogant based on our short conversation.

I drove the wrong way so ended up at the Fairyland Loop overview and took a few pictures before heading to the Sunrise Point TH.  Here I also went to the overview first to take a look-see.  I helped some people get a picture they wanted of themselves with just the right background before I headed on my way.  Don't take the Horse Trail as that appears to be an option.  The trail is wide and of course, the scenery is unbelievable in person.  Luckily it was never too crowded which is good so that I could do a lot of filming.  By the way, did you know: Hoodoos (irregular columns of rock) exist on every continent, but here is the largest concentration found anywhere on Earth.

There was one little area that wasn't clear as to which way to go and I backtracked a bit.  I was surprised to go through some people tunnels.  After one of them there is the option to take the dead end trail to the Queen's Garden.  I didn't realize the Queen was in residence in this vicinity.  I went back to the tunnel and continued on the trail into the more shaded and treed area.  You could see where the flash floods had cut through some of the landscape.  The hoodoos are less prevalent down here.
You wander in the lower realm for a bit before beginning your ascent slowly between the canyon walls of the Navajo Loop.  Altho, technically Bryce is not a canyon as it was caused by headward erosion that excavated large amphitheater-shaped features in the Cenozoic-aged rocks of the Paunsaugunt Plateau that exposed delicate and colorful pinnacles called hoodoos that are up to 200 feet high.

It is quite shaded here.  You have the opportunity to check out the twin bridges before you begin the very tight switchback ascent.  Once I was on top and filming, I asked the people below to say hello to youtube; I am always surprised how many people oblige.  It really is an impressive area and even once you're done with the switchbacks you get blown away by huge windows in the rock and Thor's Hammer.  The colors and hoodoos are truly astonishing. I was having a wonderful afternoon and ended up talking with a fellow from Texas that was having a fabulous time as well.  It's nice to see so many smiles.

It's just too bad so many of these people were hiking this loop the wrong way as it is definitely best to go clockwise from Sunrise Point.  My phone quit filming as it had no more room from all of the previous media of my Montana trip so I had to switch to my camera which doesn't have a great stabilizer; plus I didn't realize the lens had a very slight spot on it, fortunately not too bad though.  (FYI Wall Street was closed per previous storms that had come through)

Sunset Point, of course, had some great views.  I really should have stuck around for sunset but alas, I needed to get to my motel in Hatch in order to get dinner as I wasn't sure how late places would be open around here.  I think I got to Hatch Station within about 1/2 hour.  It's a great little place with a store, restaurant and motel.  The price was $60; the least I paid to stay anywhere.  The owners have had it for a few years and they snowbird in the Valley so are closed for winter.  The room is small but very clean and remote heat/ac control which was a surprise; especially when I tried to change the channel as I would get it mixed up with the tv remote.

Lots of people on the trail despite it being a Thursday. I shudder to think what it might be like on a weekend! A beautiful hike, as expected. Loved wall street and all the hoodoos and magnificent colors. We did a combo loop of Navajo loop Wall Street down and Queens Garden trail up. It was pretty hot today, about 86F. Wall Street was very impressive, as were the limber Pines growing in amazingly odd places. We also liked the Queen Victoria hoo doo. She did rather resemble the statue pictured! Great hike!

Darlene and I continued our hiking adventures of Bryce Canyon on day two. The weather was much better from our first day that was cold and windy. The temperature was 45 degrees, mostly sunny with minimal breezes. We parked our car at Sunrise Point and started on the Queen's Garden trial.
The trail was fun with amazing views of the red pinnacles and cute little tunnels. At one point we were entertained by the fattest, little chipmunk. He knew how to play the crowd and we rewarded him with some nuts.
Along that trail it split off to Navajo Loop and Wall Street which ended at Sunset Point. Wall Street was stunning! An absolute must-do when visiting Bryce Canyon. The trail took us between very narrow pinnacles that felt like you were in a cave with the sky high above you. The trail went straight up (or down depending which way you started) with switchbacks. It was absolutely amazing! We were feeling good with excess energy at Sunset Point and decided to hike along the rim to Inspiration Point then back to Sunset Point continuing along the rim to our car at Sunrise Point. My Route Scout froze at some point, so we didn't get the full mileage and I guessed it was around 5 miles.
Very enjoyable with breathtaking views of the hoodoos, unique landscapes, with rather bizarre vegetation and trees. I was told later that the red dirt contains excess iron which makes the trees natural lightning rods. If a lightning strike doesn't kill the tree immediately, it will grow twisted. It's really a sight to see.

Two friends from the North Rim came up to camp in the Dixie and visit us at Bryce Canyon NP.
Last night was a full moon so we thought "hey! Let's do a full moon hike!"

The four of us piled in my car and I parked at Sunrise Point, we hiked the 2.7 miles along the Rim Trail from Sunrise Point to Bryce Point. This was almost entirely uphill and kept us warm in the 39° windy evening.
By the time we reached Bryce Point the moon was rising just over the horizon! Perfect timing.
We stared down from the rim and made it onto the Peekaboo trail just as the moon began to light up "The Wall of Windows" above us. The Peekaboo trail is beautiful and fun lots of ups and downs on trail. Some horse poop to contend with but nothing like North Kaibab Trail

The moon lit up the hoodoos and everything was grey and chalky in color. It was a very alien environment and I understand why a few people suggested I night hike the hoodoos. I think it was a good suggestion.

We only saw two groups of people. The first was a young pair of guys stinking of weed and heading down the Peekaboo trail just ahead of us. We passed like ships in the night.

Once you've reached the end of the upper part of Peekaboo you come to a few junctions one right after the other. The first one we turned left to veer away from the rest of the Peekaboo loop and towards the north part of the Bryce Amphitheatre. The next was also a left and now we were traipsing through a soft creek bottom type area surrounded by Ponderosa Pines and Manzanita.

The final junction we met a group of five folks wandering up in the soft moonlight. We each had a decision to make, they call this junction and it's companion Bench the "Bench of Decisions".

You can exit Wall Street side of Navajo Loop, or It Two Bridges side or you can go an extra few thousand feet overall and complete the "Bryce Amphitheatre Traverse" by exiting via Queen's Garden. We opted to complete the traverse, plus it brought us right back to my car.

Things I learned throughout this hike:

- I need a brighter red light. I ended up walking in front of our group using my dimmest white light setting because my red didn't even reach the ground! There were many points were the moonlight wasn't sufficient to hike in, especially with so much winding downhill.

- I miss night hiking! Haven't done much of it in a hot minute.

- even with the moon up we could make out the Milky Way out here! Sweeeet!

- Ponderosa Pines smell stronger at night, or maybe it's just that our sense of sight is challenged by the dark so our nose kicks in?

Anyway, there you have it. Another Bryce hike checked off my list. What's next?

Currently doing my triplogs in reverse. Mom and I car camped at Ruby's Campground (it's Ruby everything in Bryce City). I am becoming a proficient car camper...it was an experience for my mom :) . She wanted a campground so she could have access to showers and a bathroom. Nice campground, very nice accommodating staff. After seeing some sights I left my mom at the General Store and the car and did quick hike of the Queens Garden. The elevation isn't much, but it comes in chunks. Really spectacular.!! Also really crowded!! Bottlenecked a couple of times. Navajo trail was closed so luckily I wasn't tempted in extending my journey. Went to the end of the Garden, took a couple of obligatory picks of the Queen and headed back up. Mileage includes the walk to the general store.

Took the whole family reunion group on this most popular loop in Bryce Canyon NP. Most of the group did the shorter Navajo Loop, while my sons-in-law and I extended the loop from Sunset to Sunrise Points. Absolutely no solitude on this trail. There is a reason why this one is so popular. Amazing geology!

Started hike about 30 minutes before sunrise from the Sunset parking area. Took the Rim Trail over to Sunrise point which was already crowded with eager beavers looking to catch the morning rays. I caught the sunrise from below the rim on Queen's Garden trail. Took the side trip to see the Queen, but even with my rampant imagination, just saw a pile of rocks. Really didn't see any other hikers until I got on Peek-a-boo (should be Peek-a-horse-poop) trail. Lots of elevation gain and loss on this loop. After completing the loop I headed up the Wall Street side of Navajo Loop, which was absolutely fantastic. Once at the top I dropped down the other side of Navajo Loop to snap some pictures of Thor's Hammer. In my opinion, the best hike in the park. If you only have one day to hike Bryce Canyon, this is the one for you!

I started my trip off at Bryce Canyon. I scored a campsite in the North Campground and got myself situated. I would hike a variety of trails over two days in the park and then move on towards Zion. This is my first time in Bryce.

Navajo Loop / Peakaboo Loop
It was late morning by the time I started this multi-loop hike. I headed down the narrow wall section which I really enjoyed. The trail is in excellent condition as it switches down. All of the trails in the park were in amazing condition. I headed down and then detoured to the Peakaboo Loop. The trail makes a respectable climb and then loops around under Bryce Point. The views are just breathtaking. The formations are incredible and the hoodoos are plentiful. I continued on and took a variety of pics as I completed the loop and started heading for Sunrise Point. I made a quick stop at the Queens Garden and then made the final climb out.

Viewpoints & Misc
I spent the evening with a couple of quick stops at Inspiration Point and Bryce Point. There were lots of people out but it wasn't overly crowded. I also took a shower at the General Store ($3 for 8 minutes and then settled in for the evening in my camp.

Fairyland Loop
On day two, I walked right out of my camp and headed for the Fairlyland Loop. I was planning on doing a counter-clockwise loop and wanted to be done around noon. I wasn’t sure what to expect with this trail. I didn’t do any research. I just had GPS routes to follow. So I headed down and cruised to magnificent views that only got better. I continued down and took the short detour over to Tower Bridge which is an impressive formation. From there the trail makes a solid climb as it wraps its way to the NE towards Fairyland Canyon. This section blew me away. The formations are stunning and the colors are vibrant. Every turn brought a new perspective and I was in heaven. This stretch goes on for several miles and then I started my ascent back to the rim. Once up top I admired the section I just hiked through. It’s one of the most visually stunning sections of trail I’ve ever hiked! I would highly recommend! The rest of the hike along the rim was easy going as I looked down on the area I just hiked. A short time later I walked back into my camp to relax. I have a couple more hikes planned for the afternoon.

Mossy Cave
After taking my lunch in camp, I headed north and drove over to the Mossy Cave Trailhead. This is a short hike with a nice waterfall. There were several cars at the TH when I started hiking. The trail parallels a creek in Water Canyon. I walked over to the Mossy Cave which had a steady trickle of water pouring out. After that I headed over to the waterfall which is solid. It’s roughly 20 ft high and had a solid flow of water coming over. After admiring the waterfall I continued a bit up canyon and then turned around and made the hike out. I wanted to drive to the south end of the park and that would take some time.

Bristlecone Pine Loop
The drive to the south end of the park is very pleasant. It’s just under 20 miles with a variety of viewpoints along the way. I arrived and made a loop around the Bristlecone Pine Loop trail. The going is very easy and there are several viewpoints that look down on the valleys below. I was really glad I spent the time driving down here.

I would return to camp and spend one final night and then move on to NW Zion. I greatly enjoyed my time in Bryce and made good use of the time. This park is stunning and the hiking is easy going with incredible views. I highly recommend Bryce!

The trail that goes to Two Bridges was closed for trail damage. Otherwise, good hike.

I great loop to experience the Bryce Canyon Amphitheater. Lets you hike through the hoodoos and get up, close and personal. Kids had a great time.

We explored Bryce Canyon today, doing the Rim Trail from Sunset to Sunrise point, hiking to Tower Bridge, and then doing the loop down the Queen's Garden Trail and up the open section of the Navajo Loop. It was an amazing morning.

Bryce Canyon: One of the best hikes I've been on, the loop beginning at Sunrise Point and then immediately descending into the hoodoos via Queen's Garden Loop. In the late afternoon, the sun glowed off the hoodoos - incredible first impression of Bryce. The trail consists of many arched tunnels that escort you through the trail, sometimes serving as door ways to vastly different sceneries on the other side. At the bottom of the descent the trail bottoms out in a lightly wooded area encompassing a couple of washes, linking up with Navajo Trail.

Navajo Trail consists of several up and down switchbacks, offering initial glimpse and then wide views of the Twin Arches above. In this area the hoodoos are above and surrounded by the packed siltstone slopes. On a Monday, approaching dusk, we had the entire trail to ourselves and didn't see anyone on the entire Navajo Trail until Wall Street, near the switchbacks back up to Sunrise Point to complete the loop. (The irony of naming a several million year old geologic feature after Wall Street kills me inside.)

Great loop. Must do in Bryce, and not overly strenuous.

This was part of Mighty Five trip 2016. We completed 5 parks in 5 days in Utah.

Day 2 was Bryce Canyon National Park. This was our first time to Bryce and it was great. We started out doing the Navajo Loop tied in with Queens Garden. I had heard this referred to as the best 3 mile hike out there and I have to agree with that. We went down the Wall street section and then came up Queens Garden and connected them with the Rim trail. We did this early, but much of the trail was in the shade still. Found the crowds here to be much smaller than in Zion. I am excited to go back here some day. We stayed the night here again in Bryce.
