Day 4 of our Utah hiking excursion. Some great hiking/scenery this day. Excellent coordination and flexibility by the senior planners. Driving in the snow was a little hairy though. Worked out well in the end. :)

the drive from escalante to capitol reef goes over boulder mountain
it was still snowing and the road was icy, slushy and slick - john has his hands full
we stopped at the visitors center to check out some of the closures
chimney rock trail was closed, as was the scenic drive past the campground
cassidy arch was high on the list, so we figured out an alternate route
cohab canyon to frying pan to cassidy arch spur
this turned out to be a great choice, our favorite hike of the trip
lots of cool rock formations, great views, good trail and the arch
we hung out at the arch for awhile, watching some people rappel, then retraced our steps
next up was hickman bridge
lots of people on this short hike, but a nice destination
checked out the petroglyphs, then made a loop out of sunset and gooseneck trails on our way out
capitol reef is my favorite of the utah national parks for hiking, although i would like to spend more time in the needles district of canyonlands
cohab and frying pan were new ones for me, still need to go all the way to navajo knobs
good burgers at the rim rock restaurant in torrey
stayed in cabins at thousand lakes rv park
i also recommend torrey trading post for a camping cabin
great day :)

Day 4 of 5 in Utah

Overnight snow on Mound Mountain made for a slow, icy, slippery drive from Escalante to Capitol Reef NP. Once we got out of the snow and ice, we had to pry John's fingernails out of the steering wheel.

Once again, closures had us changing things up a bit from our plans, but everything worked out great.

Cohab Canyon - Frying Pan - Cassidy Arch
9.62m / 2481' AEG

This was a last-minute change, which worked out perfectly. It was probably everyone's favorite hike of the week.
It starts with a steep climb, followed by a scenic meander through Cohab Canyon. Once you turn onto the Frying Pan Trail, the climb on slickrock begins. When you weren’t watching your footing, the surrounding views were absolutely stunning.
We didn’t encounter many people until we reached the Cassidy Arch Trail. Many of the people here had started on the much shorter Grand Wash Trail to reach the arch. The arch itself was impressive, and there were two groups of rappellers making the drop. The second group mentioned that there were seven separate rappels to get to the bottom.
We returned the way we came to enjoy the views from the other direction.

Hickman Bridge
2.33m / 613' AEG

Hickman Bridge Trail is a worthwhile, short side trip, but don’t expect solitude.
The arch/bridge is impressive.

Petroglyph Panels
0.37m / 10' AEG

Since it was on our way back, we decided to check out this short trail.

Sunset Point Trail - Gooseneck Overlook Loop
0.89m / 77' AEG

This turned out to be a very nice hike as well. It’s two short trails that start from the same trailhead. Kelly suggested turning this into a loop, which worked out great, with an easy off-trail portion.

Off to out last set of cabins, after a nice dinner, so Bruce could get picked on again playing UNO.

I woke up to a freezing morning in the Fruita Campground and decided to go for a run to get warm. I began my tour of Capitol Reef on the Freemont River trail, down past the visitor center to the school and petroglyph site. My final destination was Hickman Bridge. This trail is less than 2 miles round trip, but had so many surprises in the short amount of time I spent there. Amazing views and a fun lasso-loop trail to hike. This is a must-do in Capitol Reef!

We did Hickman Bridge at the end of one of our travel days.

It's a short hike to a nice natural bridge. We found it to be a very busy and crowded hike.

picked out a few trails in the park that looked like fun
a loop around a plateau, an arch and a natural bridge
first stop was chimney rock trail
got going around 0900
good warmup heading up to the top of mummy cliff
nice view of chimney rock, even though the hike doesn't really go anywhere near it
circled the top counterclockwise, hitting a high point with nice views of fruita
dropped toward chimney rock canyon and the intersection with spring canyon trail, through an area with huge boulders that have fallen from the canyon walls
an easy ascent west to close the loop along the base of another canyon wall
beautiful blue skies contrasting above it
saw only a few people on the loop, but more as we heading back to the trailhead
a good choice
stopped at the visitor center for a few minutes, then drove down to grand wash
very different terrain in this area, and the hike to cassidy arch was my favorite of the day and maybe the trip
quarter mile down the wash, then the actual cassidy arch trail ascends steeply up a break in the canyon wall and onto a bench
it gains a couple of benches and follows three drainages before splitting off to the south toward the arch
we didn't see the arch at first, gaining a high point with nice views before wandering around a bit
good footing after the initial ascent, much of it on slickrock
the opening to the arch is huge, and you can circle around it, getting on top of the arch
it's very wide - safety first :)
took some pics, had a snack and headed back down
another short one at just over three and a half miles, but very scenic and interesting
drove down the scenic drive a bit, then had a cup of coffee at gifford house
pie selection by that point was not my favorite
headed to the hickman bridge trailhead
only two miles on sand and slickrock and another fun one
trail loops under the bridge
we checked out another viewpoint before heading back
different terrain here, too, after starting out along the fremont river
made a stop at the petroglyph site, then headed back to torrey for dinner at capitol reef inn & café
stayed at torrey trading post cabins again
nice to have the whole day in the park without driving anywhere
think this was my favorite day of hiking and there is so much more to do in the park
unfinished business
posting more photos than usual as capitol reef seems a little underrepresented on haz

Crowded park today. Seems the Columbus Day weekend is the end of their season. Was going to hit all the stuff off the scenic drive and the highway as quick as I could and then head up to Cathedral Valley.

Drove to the end of the Scenic drive, after depositing my $10, and worked back. The Petroglyph Narrows and the tanks were fun, and easy little scramble at the end. Love the rock art, native and settlers both. No idea how the really high and very clear list of 6 names from Sep 11 got up there on the south wall close to the trailhead.

Hit Oyler Mine real quick and then hiked to Cassidy Arch, a bit of a huffer for the first section but lots of fun later. Cool arch!

All the sites along the highway were quick stops except the petroglyphs (Archaic and Fremont intermixed) and Hickman Bridge. Found a small bear pecked out at the petroglyph site, loved him. My new screen saver. Hickman is a good little hike. Don't miss the two small pothole arches about half way up. They are geology in the making.

We checked out Capitol Reef today, and managed to visit Hickman Bridge, Fruita Overlook (after getting a bit lost), and then Capitol Gorge to the Tanks. I really enjoyed this somewhat less developed Utah NP.

Sunrise hike on Election Morning up to Hickman Bridge. Stopped off for the petroglyphs on our way over after camping the previous night in Capitol Reef, and warmed up the day with this mild hike. The trail immediately inclines to escape the river gorge and roadway to an isolated escape. On an autumn weekday we were the only ones in site, and enjoyed the echoes of the canyon to ourselves. It's a big bridge!

This was part of our Mighty Five Trip 2016. We did 5 parks in 5 days in Utah.

Day 3: Capitol Reef National Park. day 3 started with us leaving Bryce Canyon and driving to Capitol Reef via Scenic route 12. It was scenic. That road takes you through quite a few different landscapes and they are all great.
Once arriving at Capital reef we made Hickman Bridge our first stop. It was warm on the climb up with no clouds to help fight off the sun. However still a great hike and the bridge was nice, provided some shade too. :)

I hadn't read the description for this hike before doing it and I came to the first bridge, my reaction was that Hickman bridge wasn't much to see. We decided to continue up the valley and ended up finding the real Hickman Bridge. Much better. Good views of the bridge from the trail. We did a little extra wandering around which increased the milage and AEG a bit.
