How many people can go to a national park on their way home from the dentist?

I had made a dental appointment in Holbrook because I was very disappointed with a dentist in Show Low, and the ones in Eagar didn't have appointments until next year, when my current medical plan will have changed. It's 90 miles from Eagar to Holbrook, along 180, passing the south entrance to Petrified Forest.

So, I decided to stop in at Petrified Forest on my way home, for a short hike.

I really liked the dentist. But when I went out to my car, it wouldn't start. The dentist came out and helped me with it. I had left the lights on! I carry jumper cables with me. Actually, both dentists and one of the techs came out to help, because I was parked next to a tech's car. She started it up, and Dr. Hansen hooked up the cables. The second dentist, Dr. Fish, observed the operation. She had recommended Dr. Hansen as the best mechanic in the office. Does that happen in Phoenix? Emphatically NO!

Oh, you wanted to hear about the hike? It's a couple miles, a lot of it on old asphalt, to see all the long logs and then walk over to the (NPS reconstructed, but not to Anasazi specs) ancient dwelling they call Agate House.

The only wildlife I saw was a raven, who squawked at me as I sat in the lee of the shade structure and ate my roast beef sandwich with horseradish, Swiss cheese, brown mustard and red onions. I didn't offer to share it. There was a slight breeze and the temperature was less than 50 degrees.

Hiked Long Logs and Agate House with the family as part of our Petrified Forest and Monument Valley trip.

True to form I forgot that the trailhead for this trail is the same as the Giant Logs/visitor center parking lot and accidentally drove past the trail looking for it and had to double back.

I didn't remember whether or not this trail was fully paved or not so we brought Eanáir in the hiking backpack in case there was some rougher terrain. It turned out that the entire route was either paved or very smooth so the stroller would have been fine (oh well extra workout for me). The grandparents went as far as the sunshade but opted to skip the spur to Agate House.

A pretty trail as usual, lots of near-intact petrified wood and painted desert dunes on the easternmost portion. The Agate house was interesting, like the painted desert visitors center it was originally made from petrified wood. Unlike the visitors center, it hasn't been mortared over. Its a pity they didn't polish the ends of the wood they used for construction, that would have made it a sight to behold!

It started to drizzle on the way back and we barely made it back to the car before a full-on deluge started. We had lunch in the picknick area by the entrance station and had to keep the crows at bay before continuing our trip.

Last little jaunt to PFNP, this time I headed up for an easy hike with my sister and the dogs. Dogs were particularly excited about it, and wouldn't shut up until a mile or so into the hike (one of them is a coonhound). Nothing in the park rules mentions dog volume, but I can see them adding a rule after those two visited...

We just strolled through Long Logs, then to Agate House, and headed back. Agate House was pretty cool. The dogs calmed down by the time we got to Agate House, so we decided to tack on the Giant Logs (although we saw another dog up there so tried to keep it out of sight so as to not cause another disturbance).

Kelly knew the Petrified Forest and Painted Desert were on my small bucket list.  Luckily she has been to the area three times in the last couple of years so she put together a great itinerary.  All I had to do was drive and find us a hotel for a couple nites in Holbrook, AZ.

We decided to drive the loop for our 3 day trip so I could stop at Winslow. After all, the Eagles are my era of music. It's funny though, I don't remember their Eagles World Tour concert of 1994 that I went to at Sun Devil Stadium. But I do remember the Rolling Stones at Sun Devil Stadium in 1981, go figure. Up until then, the biggest concert I had been to was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band when they toured in Montana in the 70s.

Oh ya, the trip. By the time we got to Holbrook it was lunch time. We drove the main drag looking for a place for lunch and finally found a spot with several cars. Camaleon Cafe is where I've had one of the best margaritas ever. The Cadillac had both Cointreau (which I prefer over Triple Sec) and Grand Mariner. BUT the most interesting part was the tamarind wrapped straw. I couldn't initially figure out how to tackle that. Oh, and be sure and mix this margarita before sipping. I had a BLT but FYI, it does not go well with a margarita.

We drove to the Visitors Center to pick up some brochures before heading out on the Long Logs (site of a Tirassic log jam) and Agate House hike. Apparently they turned the old road into a trail which winds through a small section of the park so it made for great walking and gawking. Almost right off the bat, Kelly spotted her first Collared Lizard which was really her main objective for this little hike. These lizards don't seem to be too shy so we were able to get a nice photo or four. We continued along and lo and behold, another Collared that also posed for a photo shoot. There were a few plants here and there with some Chinle Formation mounds in view, both near and far. Needless to say, it's pretty colorful when you throw in some petrified wood and rocks. The petrified logs were indeed rather large; some even taller than me when laying flat.

The Agate House was pretty impressive as well. And as would be the case for much of our hiking in the area, the interpretive sign provided interesting information. The signs would help provide explanation to the environment we were passing through.
When first recorded by archeologists in the 1930s, the petrified wood construction of Agate House was thought to be unique. Since then, HUNDREDS of similar petrified wood structure sites have been found in the park.
I could see the clouds start rolling in from the south so I hoped they would keep coming to provide for better photography.

Next we did the little Giant Logs Interpretive Trail (home of Old Faithful, 10 feet at the base) above the Visitors Center. They are renovating a lot of this trail in Rainbow Forest (originally called Third Forest). The pamphlet helped to provide information as to what we were looking at.
Giant Logs is geologically in the Rainbow Forest bed of the Sonsela Member (mostly sandstone and conglomerate with some mudstones) of the Chinle Formation. The Sonsela Member contains the majority of the petrified wood deposits in the park and was deposited between 219-213 million years ago.
And believe it or not, as much as I didn't want to film movies, I did. Here is the video: [ youtube video ]

angela and i have been talking about a petrified forest trip
we both rescheduled some things so that we could do this before it got too warm
left phoenix wednesday morning
grabbed a quick lunch in holbrook and went to the south end of the park
did the rainbow forest loop, which includes long logs, agate house and giant logs
got to see two of my favorite eastern collard lizards :)
drove north to the jasper forest overlook and did the hike that follows an old roadbed
lots of petrified wood and some nice badland rock formations along the way
one of the park's "off the beaten path" hikes
sue and i did this a year ago, and i enjoyed it just as much
stayed in holbrook, so we had some driving to do
good first day
weather was perfect with temps in upper 60s

Combined this with the Giant Logs loop from the visitors center. The approach to the Long Logs loop was a bit boring and long (it seems that you used to be able to drive that portion). Worth a visit.

Enjoyable. Views to Baldy, and the area reminds me of the badlands of SD.

A 5am wake up call, the twins injected their coffee, we packed up camp and made the 1.25 mile 370' climb to the top of Kachina Point. We wanted to make it to the 7am opening of the visitor center to get one of the 3 permits to get into the Devils Playground.

Devils Playground
8.41 miles - 581 AEG.

The permit is required because you are parking on private land and hiking into the park. You'll need a vehicle with halfway descent clearance for a few areas on the road in. You'll pass by a lowrider windmill with the ruins of a cabin up against the rock wall. The trail is marked for quite aways, through the Little Devils Playground and to the park boundary, where you pass through a gate. A short climb and then you drop into a beautiful maze of geology. You could spend 1 or 2 days wandering/exploring through this area. Every time you turn a corner, it changes. This is another must do if you have the time. We sampled the area and headed out to our next destination.

Historic Blue Forest Trail
1.85 miles - 145 AEG.

We'd past by this a few times and were curious. We did a portion of the trail and some off trail. I need to come back and do the full trail. Another interesting geological area. Put this one on the list of must-do's when you're in the park.

Agate House - Long Logs - Giant Logs
3.4 miles - 170' AEG

The TH for all 3 of these is located by the south entrance/visitor center.

The Agate House Trail is nice enough with the payoff being the house at the end. Good to do once.
The Long Logs Loop has a great selection of Petrified Logs and is well worth doing.
The Giant Logs Loop is right behind the visitor Center and is another one and done.

This was my first time to the park and very memorable. If geology is your jam, make it a point to go.

John/Kelly, thanks for the invite and I'll work on getting the pack weight down (or get a sherpa).
John, a BIG thanks for driving.

packed up camp after coffee and breakfast
the hike out was much easier without ten pounds of water
drove to the visitor's center to get permits for devil's playground
nice writeup on haz for this off the beaten path hike by @kingleonidas
the hike starts a few miles west of kachina point
i had the official track and bruce had another track
both tracks got us to a gate and then a short drop into devil's playground
at that point it's best to just roam around and see hoodoos, rock formations, petrified wood and colorful buttes
maybe keep track of the exit
we enjoyed exploring for awhile then hiked out
back to the park, next up was the historic blue forest trail, which is another off the beaten path hike
starting from the teepee pullout, the trail goes up an old roadbed to blue mesa road
we went up a side canyon and not all the way to the road
thought this was more scenic than blue mesa trail, and would like to do it correctly on another visit
one more stop at the rainbow forest visitor center to hike agate house and long logs
bruce added on the giant logs loop, which i just did a few weeks ago
really enjoyed the off the grid trails, and there are a few more to do on another trip
thanks for john and bruce for a great trip
we got to practice backpacking
nice to get on top of pilot rock
devil's playground is a must-do
we headed back to the valley and made it past the bullet fire right before they closed the beeline :o
good times!

Final day of our tour de PFNP. We got up early, had breakfast & coffee, packed up camp and headed up to the car. Then on to the visitors center for a permit to Devils Playground. Very cool hike.
After that we hiked Historic Blue Forest Trail, which greatly exceeded expectations. Beautiful.
Next hike was Agate House & Long Logs. Again, beautiful stuff. All three hikes recommended.
Fantastic trip with two great partners. Thanks Bruce & Kelly. :)

sue felt like she could go ahead with our planned trip to petrified forest
left town around 0800
went in the south end of the park and were hiking early afternoon
we did some of the easy hikes with good footing and minimal elevation gain
started with rainbow forest loop, which includes giant logs, agate house and long logs trails
moved north to crystal forest loop
best hike of the day was jasper forest, hiking along an old road bed below the overlook- didn't see anyone else
stayed at a koa cabin and had dinner at mesa italiana restaurant in holbrook
great recommendation, thanks mike
sue got along pretty well and everything we saw was new to me

Rolled into Payson for lunch then decided to cruise over to PEFO for a quick visit before heading home to the Canyon.

The entrance gate lines at Grand Canyon South Rim were almost two hours long yesterday so nobody in the van had an issues with dawdling in a different National Park for a few hours.

Due to the varying nature of our group we opted for this short and easy hike. I ended up playing unofficial tour guide for my friends (of course). So that was fun.

One gal spotted a killdeer (bird) hanging out below the bridge... interesting.

Third stop on a weekend trip.
Fast hike since it's mostly paved. Checked out some other spots too with short jaunts. Loved the colors of the wood and painted desert.

Stopped on the way out to buy some petrified wood at a stand and
Kept on trucking when we saw the price.

I'm lumping in a pic from our stop by meteor crater as we stopped by this on the way back.

My sister and I have been planning to visit PFNP for a few years now, and on this visit we made it happen. This was our first hike in the park since it basically starts from the visitor's center and was recommended by the park rangers. I had an idea of what to expect from the park, but was surprised by the amount of fallen logs. It truly is a "forest." The color detail is pretty incredible too.
