Already bedazzled by our first couple of hikes, it was off to the Jasper Forest. We first went to the Overlook after getting permission from a Gopher Snake. We headed down the path and around and into the valley below. My eyes were glancing back and forth trying to take it all in. The clouds had come so it created a bit of mystique to this new territory for me. There were a few flowers to be seen, but very few. After all, it was about the forest. There were a few sections that looked like someone had planted dispersed rocks and pieces of wood. It was very cool. The wind would gust from time to time, but it wasn't bad except noisy in my video.

Kelly followed a track and we eventually veered right, north. And now we were surrounded by the colors of the Chinle formation with scattered petrified wood all around. I didn't realize we were following an old road that would go around a box canyon:
this site was the first petrified wood site available to railroad travelers in the early 1900s. once encased in the sandstone ledge... A visitor in 1917 wrote, "It was 6 miles to Forest #1. It was well worth the trip tho [sic] for it is a wonderful sight... The ground was covered with broken pieces...of the high & bright colored stuff."
On one side we saw a deep blue alcove so we checked that out.

On our way back out of the box canyon we saw the Eagles Nest Rock Chinle formation. We didn't know it at the time though. It had one heck of a hoodoo on top of it back before 1941. I'll include the picture.
Still many bits of keen construction are visible. We enjoyed our walk back up the hill and the sun came out for a bit, so it really changed the coloring of the place. We had our beers at Tonto 3 and watched a raven watching us. It was a beautiful view from there.

What an awesome afternoon I had, even though my brain couldn't quite fathom how exactly this landscape came together. I put extra info on my photos and here is the link to my video [ youtube video ]

We finished the day off with splitting a Green Chili Burger, it was huge. I found another delicacy, green chilis sauce and fries, YUM. However, the second faux paux for the day, moscato doesn't really go with it. I enjoyed both though.

very little in the way of wildflowers but there were a few: Pincushion Flower, Scorpionweed, Spring Parsley and some cholla and Golden Mariposa Lilys.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

angela and i have been talking about a petrified forest trip
we both rescheduled some things so that we could do this before it got too warm
left phoenix wednesday morning
grabbed a quick lunch in holbrook and went to the south end of the park
did the rainbow forest loop, which includes long logs, agate house and giant logs
got to see two of my favorite eastern collard lizards :)
drove north to the jasper forest overlook and did the hike that follows an old roadbed
lots of petrified wood and some nice badland rock formations along the way
one of the park's "off the beaten path" hikes
sue and i did this a year ago, and i enjoyed it just as much
stayed in holbrook, so we had some driving to do
good first day
weather was perfect with temps in upper 60s

There is a lookout here, but its not very impressive to look at from such a distance. However, there is a trail that goes down below the lookout and allows you to explore the "forest." That was impressive. Highly recommend going down and exploring. Lots of cool specimens.

sue felt like she could go ahead with our planned trip to petrified forest
left town around 0800
went in the south end of the park and were hiking early afternoon
we did some of the easy hikes with good footing and minimal elevation gain
started with rainbow forest loop, which includes giant logs, agate house and long logs trails
moved north to crystal forest loop
best hike of the day was jasper forest, hiking along an old road bed below the overlook- didn't see anyone else
stayed at a koa cabin and had dinner at mesa italiana restaurant in holbrook
great recommendation, thanks mike
sue got along pretty well and everything we saw was new to me

After my Onyx Bridge hike, I opted for a few more Petrified Forest "hikes". I did the complete Crystal Forest loop, which is perhaps the least interesting of the designated park stops. I had also considered an exploration of Jasper Forest, but wasn't particularly intrigued by what I saw at the viewpoint.

Blue Mesa on the other hand -- wowsers! Simply one of the most incredible geologic sites I have ever experienced. There's a paved trail that leads through some of the basics here, but like elsewhere in PeFo, you are mostly free to explore off-trail and I made a larger extended loop away from the few tourists who ventured away from their cars. The colors here are incredible, and likely change with the weather and time of day.

This place is worth the price of admission!

Entered the park from the South, took 4-5 hours to drive through and visit all of the marked sites on the NPS map. Blue Mesa and Crystal Forest were my favorite stops.
