On my return trip from Texas I stopped in Cloudcroft for an afternoon hike. I had been on some of the trails in the Trestle Recreational Area a year ago and thought this would be a good time to finish up the rest. The three main trails are The Old Cloudcroft Highway T5002, the Switchback trail T5004 and the Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail T5001. The 9 miles of trails were easily done in 3.5 hours with plenty of time to read all the informative signs.

The weather was perfect with the exception that it was a little windy. It looks like Spring was just happening here with new growth on all the pine and fir trees. The aspen trees were bright green with new leaves. All the trails were in excellent condition with a very gradual slope, After all trains had to climb up this mountain and they don't do steep. The only trail with anything that could even be considered as steep was the Crossover Trail T5001B and that was only .3 miles long. I spent the night in town for a little more hiking in the morning before heading to Arizona and the Chiricahua Mountains.

On the third day we headed to Cloudcroft to check out some trails there. This is by far my favorite part of the trip. The forest is much heavier than in Ruidoso. The trail we opted to do was the Cloud Climbing Trestle Trail. This trail follows along the tracks as they make the final climb to Cloudcroft. Along this trail are two trestles, the "S" Trestle which is in bad shape, mostly collapsed and the Mexican Canyon Trestle which has been restored. Round trip the trail is 3 miles but there are other trails that will extend it to 8 miles. The map at the visitors center is by far the worst map ever and the signage along the trail is even worse. I got a consensus from other hikers and even the park host that they were terrible. We managed to find our way though with the help of others along the way. If in this area I highly recommend this short two hour walk.
This is an area I want to come back to for further hiking. The crest Trail is a 30 mile trail that follows along the crest south of Cloudcroft. There are multiple other trails in this area.

Following the beautiful drive from Ruidoso to Cloudcroft on NM 244 across the Mescalero Apache Reservation, we stopped at the ranger station to get information on camping in the area. We found a couple of nice side by side spots in the Sleepy Grass Campground near Cloudcroft (otherwise it would have been dispersed camping with plenty of locations in the area to choose from). After setting up, it was over to the Trestle Picnic Area for the almost obligatory short hike down to Mexican Trestle (always fun). :) Then we checked out two fire lookouts (James Ridge & Wofford) before heading into Cloudcroft to look around. Had a decent meal at the Western Bar, restocked our ice, and headed back to camp for the night. Unlike the previous days, the weather was quiet with no rain, so it made for a nice evening. I had planned on camping with them on their last night at Oak Grove Campground near Ruidoso Tuesday, but got caught in a wild thunderstorm with heavy rain and hail in Ruidoso (covered the ground white :o ), so got a motel room instead. It was nice to get at least one night of camping in on this trip. :D

In the morning Cindy & Bobby headed out to check out a couple more fire lookouts, while I drove over to Alamo Peak to the non-existent fire lookout (only a WSMR radar unit). Then it was down FR 64D through Karr Canyon to High Rolls to US 82, and on to Alamogordo. We had rooms reserved at the White Sands Motel for our night in town for the fireworks show.

After setting up our tents for night number two at Oliver Lee State Park south of Alamogordo, we were off for a day of play up at Cloudcroft and White Sands. It is always nice to do the short drive up to nearly 9000 feet to escape the heat of the valley below. When we arrived at the trailhead, it was cool and thundering. This short hike is very pleasant and in shade most of the way. We went down to the remains of the old trestle, then back up the way we came. The storms stayed east of us. After the hike it was up to The Lodge for a drink in Rebecca's, which features a bar once owned by Al Capone. My pomegranate margarita was quite good!
