We've been wanting to hike in this area for quite some time. Cathy has recovered from her transplant enough to give it a go so off we went with a bit of encouragement from @DixieFlyer. Cathy opted out of the full 9 mile loop so we used the "Little Jim" crossover trail to cut a few miles off.

From satellite view this trail looks like a giant nothing burger but the first few miles had us oohing and aahing over the views. The superbloom was just an added bonus. We've never seen so much Owl Clover, Lupine, and Globemallow among others.

The Little Jim trail doesn't get a lot of use I guess as it was virtually non-existant for much of the way. Route Scout saved the day along with the cairns. The southern section of the Walkin' Jim loop was very rocky and reminded us a lot of Limestone Trail #252 north of Spur Cross. The clouds we were counting on went away early on and it got pretty warm the last three miles.

Next time out we plan to use the Cottonwood Creek Bed to hike west and then return along the northern section of the Walkin' Jim.

More Owl Clover and Lupine than I've ever seen. Whole slopes of Desert Globemallow. Also Brittlebush, Coulters Lupine, Arizona Lupine, Narrow Leafed Popcorn Flower, Lesser Yellowthroat Gilia, and Blackfoot Daisy. This area qualifies as a superbloom in my book.

I decided to do this hike today in order to check out the wildflowers on the trails. The flowers were nice, although I'd say that they'll be better in another week or so. Poppies, lupine, blue ricardos, and globemallow all stood out today. There is lots of owl clover, but it is only about 4 inches high right now. If we get some sunny days the owl clover should look a lot better in 7-10 days.

On the way in we stopped off in a wash and saw a bit of rock art.

I did an inverse lasso loop on this hike: I went on the northern half of the Walkin' Jim loop to the Big Jim Trail, which I took up to Peak 3465. I retraced my route on the way back until I got to the Little Jim Trail, and I took it over to the south end of the Walkin' Jim Trail, which I took back to the TH.

I enjoyed hiking up to Peak 3465 again, but the hike got a bit long on the way back.

We heard some burros on the way back, but we never saw any. I have hiked on these trails several times, and this is the first time that I never saw any burros.

After the hike we stopped off at the Scorpion Bay Grill on Lake Pleasant for a late lunch and a cold beverage.

Decided to head up to Peak 3465 today. Started on the northern half of the Walkin Jim Loop, which is the better half of this loop. The trail is rocky enough that you can never quite get a good pace going. Enough cairns to stay on track in the vague spots. Saw several burros.

Headed up Big Jim Trail and made my way up to 3465. Steep and rocky, but easy to follow. One washout has a detour above it. None of the scrambling really requires hands except for balance. Took a break and had a snack at the summit before heading back down.

Since I was low on water, I decided to head back on the northern half of Walkin Jim, rather than completing the loop. The trail on the southern half of the loop (especially the western side) is hard to follow in places, and I didn’t want to waste time or water.

When I was at the junction with Little Jim, I decided to head south on that and reconnect with the rest of the loop after all. Again, Little Jim was vague in places, but I just kept heading the correct direction and always found the trail or cairns again. Once on the southern side of Walkin Jim, I headed east, finishing out the loop, and taking my usual shortcut as I approached the traihead.

Saw a lot of burros today. Tons of birds. Zero people. Warm, too warm for the end of November. No breeze. No clouds. Still a nice day though.

Enjoyed the shorter loop hike through the area using the Walkin' Jim Loop and the Little Jim shortcut. Beautiful desert scenery and views of the surrounding mountains. No one else on the trail even though the parking lot is full with trucks that unloaded ATVs - luckily no ATVs were seen or heard near the hiking trail. Following the trail is mostly easy but still more effort is needed not to lose the trail compared to other more established trails.

Was planning on taking the harem up to Prescott, but with the Badger Springs fire closing the I-17 on Friday night and cooler temps in Phoenix, decided to go out to Lake Pleasant and do the Walking Jim/Little Jim loop. First vehicle in the parking area @ 5:30. Lots of trash at the trailhead, mattress, blankets, etc. Had the whole trail to ourselves with the exception of 2 burros spotted in the wash near the end of our trek. Lot's of well worn burro trails all over the place makes staying on the main trail difficult, especially on the Little Jim section and the southern return.

Took the family out for my first hike of the new year. I had to finish up the Little Jim Trail from when I did the big loop and peak hike back in April, and this one seemed perfect.

Got to the TH and found it packed with ATVers. Just a couple of spots left. Then I found that my phone wasn't charging on the ride up because the charger came loose, so I was already at 47%. We waited 10 min until it got up to 57% and then took off.

We did the loop clockwise, which seemed like the best idea. The southern half of the loop has a lot of loose rocks, which makes for some slower going. Coming back on the smoother section of the Walkin' Jim trail was pretty nice. The temps were pretty nice, it actually seemed warmer at the beginning that at the end, but that might be because we were walking uphill. We also hiked the section of the trail I skipped last time going the long way around the hill.

Saw one other hiker the whole time. She had an unleashed dog that she told was friendly. Then Dmitri started to walk by him and he barked, so she finally grabbed him and held him while we walked by. Didn't see any burros or other wildlife the entire time. Some spots of the washes actually still had some water, which was surprising.

At the end of the hike, Route Scout wouldn't shut down. I would hit the stop button, and it would freeze. I restarted the phone twice and it would start up again recording where it left off each time. Eventually had to uninstall the entire app and reinstall it later at home to fix the problem, thereby losing the route. Fortunately, I always use RS and my Garmin Oregon, so I still recorded my route for the hike.

Nothing special or extraordinary, but a very nice Sunday hiking with the family, with the earned lazy time at home the rest of the day.

So....

How well do you think a summit attempt of 3465 would go with my 66 year old Floridian father in law?

Just..... short of the saddle...

The joys of a 3.5 MPH hiker hiking with a 1.75 MPH hiker...

Saw 7 cows and a human on the trail, a first for me out there...

Cloudy and overcast all day - kept the temps down. Hadn’t been on these trails and enjoyed the loop and spur part way up to the saddle / summit.

Got rattled at by a buzzworm but didn’t see it in a large bush. Heard 5 or 6 burros and saw 2.

Wanted to show off one of my favorite corners of the valley to a new hiking partner. So the agenda was to get out of town, find some solitude and track down some wildflowers. From reading some of the assorted triplogs from the past few weeks my expectations were low on finding a good display.

Headed out on the Walking Jim trail going counter clockwise. A few wildflowers here and there, but nothing major. Once we hit the Little Jim we were greeted with some impressive displays of wildflowers. Enjoyed a wonderful time snapping a few pics, taking in the views and looking out for burros.

Intersected back with the Walking Jim trail and the wildflowers dropped off again. So Little Jim is the way to go to see a few flowers. Despite an almost perfect day for hiking, did not see another person on the trails. I'm always surprised that such a great trail so close to town is always free and clear of crowds.

Pretty light on the Walking Jim, saw some buds so it might look nice next week. Little Jim has the more impressive display.

I was looking for a fairly easy trail with solitude and some nice scenery and came across the Walkin' Jim. I was also hoping to see some water, so the fact that it was right next to Lake Pleasant was a bonus. 31 years in Phoenix and I've never been to Lake Pleasant, so this was a good opportunity. I'd never heard of this trail until a couple days ago. We just did the Little Jim Loop, and we had the whole trail to ourselves today. Not bad for a weekend. :)

Getting to the trailhead was a nice drive...not a lot of traffic at all. The trailhead was full of trucks with empty boat trailers (even though it's on the opposite side of the road where the lake was...) so I wasn't sure at first this was the trailhead. It's not marked but it's the first big pullout on the left heading north on Castle Hot Springs Rd, and the CW and CCW trails start out right next to each other in the NW corner of the lot. We chose the CCW route.

Starting out you have nice views of the Hieroglyphic Mountains and you soon cross the creek bed. Completely dry, of course, but a nice shady spot with some big Cottonwoods. The trail winds around and crosses a few washes. This area seems to be thriving...definitely more scenic than your average desert trail. The trail is faint in some areas but it is well-cairned. These first couple miles are mostly flat, but it's a nice stroll. We passed under a low wire fence and curved down into another big wash. After leaving the wash we heard a burro up on the ridge to our left and spotted a group of 3 of them up there, observing us.

Getting on the Little Jim Trail you start to elevate, and this is most of the elevation for the trip. We started to feel the heat here with virtually no shade, but it's nothing too strenuous. You cross another big wash, and I was surprised to actually see a little water left here, with the water still trickling down slowly. Halfway through the Little Jim we saw another large group of 6 or 7 burros about 50 ft away in a wash, and a couple cattle hanging out under the shade of a large mesquite tree. The burros backed off as we went by and went up to the small ridge behind them and watched us walk on until we were out of sight. Pretty cool seeing such a large group of them. :)

Once getting back on the main trail it is fairly uneventful and you mainly parallel the trail you came from on the other side of the wash. There are a few more little ups and downs but again nothing too bad. Climbing up to a small high point you have the best views yet (on this small loop, at least) of the Hieroglyphic Mountains behind you. You also have a view of the lake in the distance for a bit. The deep blue waters of the lake really stand out in the desert.

This is a great area and a great hike. Loved the contrast in environments, and all the mesquite and cottonwood trees. Next time I'll try the whole Walkin' Jim Trail, and hopefully the whole Big Jim loop eventually. :) After the hike we stopped by Lake Pleasant to take a dip in the water and cool off.

Pulled up to the trailhead at 5:27 am to find Spiderlegs ready to rock. We decided the north Walkin' Jim was a better choice for total darkness, so off we went, only losing about 5 minutes in a clearing trying to figure out where the trail went. Soon the sky began to lighten and we had a great clear sunrise just as we started the Big Jim trail. A perfect golden 3465' was in full view and I was geeked. It's not always practical or easy, but first light makes the boring interesting, and the interesting extraordinary.
The trail ended and the cairns began - a moderate scramble with no exposure and few annoying flora passed quickly, and we were at the summit register.
We spent about 20 minutes looking for the 1902 inscription, but failed to find anything anywhere near the top. :-k
On the way down Big Jim we ran into sleepyheads NightStalker and his friend on their way up. We exchanged cookie recipes and wished them luck.
We took the Little Jim on the way back for variety, and came across a spring that wasn't on the map. Spiderlegs waypointed it, but it's hard to say whether it flows year round.
We got back to the parking lot before noon - a perfect hike of a cool mountain with another HAZ member I'm glad to have met. In the future I think I'll go back to accessing this range from Morgan City Wash though, the Walkin' Jim trails are a bit long and nondescript for my taste.
I made a short video using the music of the late Walkin' Jim Stoltz, a prolific hiker who the trails are named after.

Where to start??? First of all let me say I love reading all the triplogs of the areas that I hike. Every triplog adds a new unique perspective to the puzzle. Often times, I read logs before and after a hike to try to connect the dots a little bit better. If you have never hiked in this area, you are missing out. Berry Swicegood did a fantastic write up for Pike's Peak (which I feel certain is the the same as Peak 3465-Hieroglyphic Mountain). In his write up, he provides a link Jim Stotlz for whom this trail is named after. I highly recommend clicking on that link or simply You Tubing Walkin Jim Stotlz. His music and photos are truly meaningful if you have any connection to the trails you are hiking on.

As for the hike... Started off from TH going clockwise. This was a first. Previous times, I've hiked going counter clockwise. This changed things up nicely. Instead of catching glimpses of Lake Pleasant on this part of the trail I was treated to cacti covered views and jagged mountains in the distance. It was 2 miles to get to the Little Jim Trail. I was surprised that the trail to get to the Little Jim was as faint as it was. Because of the recent rains green growth was everywhere. The trail was evident, but it just had not been trodden on frequently. The same held true for the Little Jim Trail as it headed north over rolling hills. For all the healthy foliage, I was disappointed that the flowers were not more abundant. I encountered my first wildlife - a young steer, with budding horns - snorted warningly as I entered one of several washes that I had to traverse. This wash was the one just prior to the Little Jim connecting back to the Big Jim Trail. I was surprised to find what appeared to be a small, but active spring. The water originated just beyond where the trail turned up the bank, trickled for about 20 feet into a pool where it stopped.

The hike back on Big Jim was uneventful, though I was startled by two burros. I was able to catch a couple of glimpses of Lake Pleasant, but the views of the lake are much better from the southern half of the Big Jim than the northern, the elevation being higher on that part of the trail. The trail back was much more evident, making me wonder if hikers are doing in and outs, rather than loops.

My words really don't do justice for this area. There are very few trails, close to the valley, that are this easy to follow that get you this close to nature. And usually, you get this smorgasbord all to yourself. As I did today :D

I did the Little Jim Loop trail this morning. 41 degrees at the trail head when I started, brrrr. I hiked it counter-clockwise which provided nice views of Lake Pleasant on the return to the trailhead. The trail was very easy to follow up to the Little Jim shortcut and became faint up to reconnecting with the Walking Jim Trail, where, surprisingly, it remained faint all the way back to the trailhead. Saw two coyotes first thing and then a burro watching me from a ridge about 2 miles in. I really enjoyed the hike, but was a little bummed that it didn't cross any of the nearby peaks and ridgelines. I would definitely do it again!

Went out early to look for mammals and critters alike. Bust! Got a few good bird shots though, just missed a red Cardinal photo, my camera went out of focus at the last minute(figures)

Enjoyed hearing the militia groups shooting up the desert (not)

This really is God's country. I came across a group of Javalina that had 2 adults and 5 babies. Further along I came across 6 wild Burros and I watched them for a few minutes. Deeper into the hike the trail becomes very faint, I lost it a few times while going across some washes, thank goodness for the Cairns. I saw another group of burros on the South side of the wash, they must be territorial because, they were in the same spot when I came back through.

1st trip
I've been eyeing this one for awhile now. My son was home on break, so it was a perfect day to eat away at the over eating from T-Day.

First....A big thanks to Bob Gregg, who has created and maintained the trails up here (quite recently actually). This was the first time I've hiked the northern portion of the loop and did not need GPS to guide me.

We followed the Walkin' Jim Trail at Cottonwood Creek, to the newly created Big Jim Trail.
The Big Jim Trail (Newly signed) takes off from the western most portion of the Wakin' Jim Trail.
This trail takes you to the saddle almost directly north of Peak. 3465. From here, my son and I cairned a trail to the top of the peak. It's about .6 mile to the peak. We thought we'd be one of the first to ever get to this remote peak..... but after reading the peak log that was placed in 1993...... we were the first since 2008.

Excellent 360 views from the top!

We were very lucky to stumble across a rock that was engraved with the name H T Sprouse Jan 26th 1902 (See my pictures).
So there was a 108 year span from first to last on the peak!
Saw 6 wild burros on the way back to the TH.

Great weather! Great Hike!
