Did Nature Trail, then Calloway, then cut over to Hunter to do it again.

The Grandkids and I wandered around the State Park doing the little trails and taking pics before heading over to the Ostrich Ranch for some more fun. Hit Frankies in Tucson for cheese steak sandwiches before racing the rain back to the valley! Good times!

Randy reminded me to get my pass again. With work and stuff I didn't get there until about 1pm. Parked at the visitor center to get Pass and just left the car there while I hiked. There was a no parking note on my windshield when I got back. Luckily it was just from another Hazer :o  . I hiked from the visitor center up to Hunter trail and did that first. Then I did the cave trail, Calloway, and Nature. Nice variety of flowers and tempos are great. Not crowded at all today. I did see a seasoned hiker take a tumble. The guy in front of me helped him up and he seemed ok. Once I thought he was good I told him that was the best tuck and roll I've ever seen and gave him a pat on the back. Didn't even see a scratch! East and south of the park there is a good swath of something orange. Thought it was poppies but now I think it might be a Globe Mallow or something! Great weather and hike!!

Denny and I hit this after the Picacho Peak loop so Denny could close the area hiking list. Short and sweet!

Ray was nice enough to appease me and do this hike on the way out. It was on the Picacho list so I thought we should get er done. Looked to be some civil war stuff below this to check out. Next time...

Thought it was time to return to this trail. It is definitely worthy of an annual visit. Plus, there are some new, shorter trails that have been added to HAZ that I needed to "get r done". Actually timed it almost perfectly. I arrived at the park just before 5am. The gates to the park were still closed (based on a previous visit, I didn't realized that the gates actually closed), but a few minutes passed 5 the gates opened automatically. I paid my fee and I was on my way. Made it to the top fairly easily, though I was somewhat hampered by my velcroed pouch that holds my garmin around my forearm. The velcro no longer sticks, so I had to carry my garmin by hand. That made it somewhat awkward dealing with some of the cabled sections. Great views from the top. Much better than my previous visit. Temps were awesome! Passed one group as I was going up and quite a few as I was coming down. One of the nice things about getting an early start is that I'm just finishing up as most hikers are starting. Saw what I am pretty sure was a fox, (near the Sunset intersection), but my heart wants to say it was a coatimundi. It definitely had a ringed tail, but it also definitely had a foxlike face. Either way, it is a rare sighting for me, so I was stoked.

Drove back down to Picacho Peak to burn some kid-energy and get a better GPS route for Nature Trail (description coming eventually). It was hot and muggy in the morning, plenty of biting gnats to annoy us throughout. Started near the playground on Barrett Loop, wandered over to Nature Trail via one of the bajillion unnamed connector trails, did the loop (and Memorial Loop as well, which had a cannon that the boys loved), and then came back to spend some quality time at the playground. Decided to skip out Children's Cave due to a... stinky situation... with the baby girl. Which was all the more awesome to deal with thanks to a Tula. Ended the trip with a DQ breakfast. Didn't do the cherry-dip this time because eating ice cream for breakfast in front of the kids seemed like setting a bad example.
