sierra and i camped at picacho. hiked from our camp site out to the little cave at dusk. it was gorgeous out

had a nice chill night. wind came in with a frickin force about midnight! :o but we knew it was coming so no big deal.

in the morning we hiked out to a cool arch by the campground after we took down camp. had fun climbing around up there, then hiked the calloway trail on the way out. the wind gave us a little break

The Grandkids and I wandered around the State Park doing the little trails and taking pics before heading over to the Ostrich Ranch for some more fun. Hit Frankies in Tucson for cheese steak sandwiches before racing the rain back to the valley! Good times!

Randy reminded me to get my pass again. With work and stuff I didn't get there until about 1pm. Parked at the visitor center to get Pass and just left the car there while I hiked. There was a no parking note on my windshield when I got back. Luckily it was just from another Hazer :o  . I hiked from the visitor center up to Hunter trail and did that first. Then I did the cave trail, Calloway, and Nature. Nice variety of flowers and tempos are great. Not crowded at all today. I did see a seasoned hiker take a tumble. The guy in front of me helped him up and he seemed ok. Once I thought he was good I told him that was the best tuck and roll I've ever seen and gave him a pat on the back. Didn't even see a scratch! East and south of the park there is a good swath of something orange. Thought it was poppies but now I think it might be a Globe Mallow or something! Great weather and hike!!

One of the reasons for me to revisit this park was to scratch this little guy off the list. After Hunter, I wandered over to see what this trail had to offer. Definitely no comparison to Hunter Trail, but for families with small kids it might be just right. Very short in its own right. But there are other nearby, relatively flat trails that could add some distance for those who are not compelled to tackle the "Peak". And that's what I did. After the Children's Cave, I hiked around the Nature Trail as well. Both trails had info signage, that made it a more educational, but otherwise ...

Quick afternoon jaunt. Due to parental constraints I didn't get to the park until 2:30 (pm) and a somewhat humid 105. Only one other vehicle along Barrett Loop. Did Calloway first, then backtracked and headed up Hunter. Man, this is a fun one. Legs were crying when I saw that drop on the other side of the ridge, and some of the cable sections are legit. Wish I lived closer than an hour away, could see this being a great after-work ritual. Caught up with the other hiker just below the peak, who ended up being a very talkative climber, which slowed my pace a bit (not that I was complaining).

Trotted back down to Sunset Vista and committed to the full loop. This trail had a few badly washed out sections that gave me pause. Once things leveled off it was a simple, if boring, haul around the western remnants. Dark clouds and dust gave me plenty to look at as I followed the unnamed roadside path back to Barrett Loop. Decided to do Children's Cave, since it was right there, and then Nature Loop, figuring I'd get all five of the named trails completed. Think I messed up on Nature Loop, will have to come back w/ my boys to check (and maybe to test the playground equipment out). Thanks to the storm on the east side of 10 it was a mild 90 when I finished up.

Drank 3.5 L water + 2 Gatorades, still had some cramps for the last mile. Should have mixed some electrolytes w/ the water, thought the Gs would be enough. And of course, enjoyed the Picacho classic on the way out.

I swear I wish it was me that got hurt over Isaac. I'd take a bullet for my Grandkids.
It's Grandpa Tuesday with Lily and Isaac. We headed down to Picacho Peak State Park and hiked Calloway Trail. Lily doesn't usually lead but did the whole hike. After that the kids filled out their worksheets and we headed back to the Ranger station to get sworn in as Junior Rangers before it closed . All WAS WELL! We circled around to do the Children's Cave Trail and then the playground. It started to sprinkle but the Cave Trail is only .2 each way. Some how poor Isaac fell on a rock, hit his gut, and his head went over and head butted a smaller rock. Uggggg :scared: I'm checking his gut when Lily points out the golf ball on his forehead! OMG I feel sooooooooo bad!! Of course he is a bigger man then me. He did the little cave trail, the playground, and Mcds + playground on the way home. Mom says he is doing good  :app: . Hopefully not the last Grandpa Tuesday...
