Week 1 staying at my sister's place in Lakeside, decided to hit as many of the trails in the areas as possible to train for some big upcoming events.

Tuesday morning - Woodland trails

4.5 miles, 41 minutes - Took the hound dog up Turkey Track, down the back half of Hitching Post, and then around Woodland Lake. Somewhat aggressive pace. The house is a quarter mile from trail system access, which is nice.

Tuesday afternoon - Country Club Loop w/ Pat Mullen Mountain

4.4 miles, 51 minutes - Nice gentle grade until the spur, then a little hiking up to the summit. The amount of twists and turns on the 2nd half of the loop was annoying. The top of the hill is nice enough.

Wednesday morning - Woodland trails

6 miles, 1 hour - Brought dog again, did the Hitching Post loop followed by Turkey Track/Walnut.

Thursday morning - Timber Mesa

7.5 miles, 1 hour 40 minutes - Thought it was going to be a lot flatter at the top. Still kinda flat, but some rollers. Map mileage was right on. It's a pleasant enough loop, with some decent views here and there.

Thursday afternoon - Springs loop

3.4 miles, 37 minutes - with dog. Both of us enjoyed this one (which is to say, I enjoyed it, as she enjoys any and all trails). Creek is still flowing.

Friday morning - Woodland trails

4.4 miles, 49 minutes - with dog. Turkey Track, Walnut, Big Springs loop, then down Hitching Post.

Definitely a nice change of pace from the PMP...

Short walk the day after Thanksgiving in the Lakewood Park area of Pinetop. The trails are part of a system of trails in Woodland Lake Park. Nothing strenuous just a stroll in the park. Cold start of the hike in the upper 30's but the sun felt great. A little bit of ice on the lake edges. Hiked the Hitching Post. Turkey Track and Woodland Lake Loop.

This is a nicely maintained trail system in the town of Pinetop/Lakeside. The Woodland Lake loop is by far the most popular trail with about 200 people of all varieties (lots of families) enjoying the pleasant morning weather. Unfortunately, the town's loss of water rights is showing as despite all the recent rain, the reservoir was barely 30% full, with the dock and boat ramps out of commission due to the low lake level. Pleasant enough to hike around, but not enough for any water activities to take place.

In comparison to the crowded lake loop, I had most of the rest of the park to myself, only encountering a handful of other people. The trail system is well marked. The Walnut Creek trail is overflowing with wildflowers of all colors and varieties, and the beaver activity in the Big Springs Study area had me curious...I could also make out the beaver lodge, but wasn't sure if they are allowing any beavers to stay as residents, since I didn't spot the culprit. There was a fierce army of ducks guarding the western edge of the lake, but they let me pass with only a scolding  . Most of the rest of the park is fairly plain trail through...pine woodland, who would have thunk it?

About the only bad thing of note is about half the people who use this trail system blatently disregard the dogs-on-leash policy throughout all park trails (ignoring the many, many signs), and I got introduced to one muddy dog who saw fit to bolt from their owner and jump on me...apparently the doggo just "really likes to meet new people" according to it's illiterate owner... ](*,)

Belated post from Pinetop vacation.
Woodlands Park Trail is more like its own miniature trail system, similar to the Constellation Trail System in Prescott. A grouping of small interconnecting trails within the town limits of Pinetop. I did this trail(s) over a period of several days usually as a cool down hike after a longer trail run or as a nice hike with my wife. There are 7 named trails (with a handful of access trails to the park), within this system ranging in length from .2 miles to Just under 3 miles. Most trails were fairly wide swaths composed of compact dirt and rocky conditions so it is kind of hard to distinguish one trail for another except in name. I found exceptions to this were the Woodland Lake Loop Trail. This was a 1 mile paved path that circled Woodand Lake. Easy to walk. Minor elevation change with numerous benches along the way. The Walnut Creek Trail. This was a .7 mile single track trail that ran between sections of the Turkey Track Trail. Much more intimate than the other trails offered in this location. Trail ran along a slow flowing creek which we had to cross several times. The night before there had been a major rainstorm that left quite a few pools of water that made hiking this trail more challenging than it typically is. There is some elevation change but trail should be doable by all, (especially when not muddy). The Nature Center Trail. Special trail. It has its own TH. and is a fringe trail within this group that does its own loop (but is linked by a connecting trail). It has a quite a few info signs along the way talking about the characteristics of a healthy forest. Trail is wide and composed of crushed cinders and also includes a "manufactured" wetland. The Enviromental Big Springs Trail. Special trail. It has its own TH and is another fringe trail within this group that does its own loop (but is also linked by a connecting trail). It has a nice intro with a bridge crossing that looks upon a covered bridge further down stream. Kind is cool. Trail itself is short and more intimate than most of the other trails. Composed of compact dirt with occasional rocky sections it goes along the northern edge of ......lake. There are several benches along the way overlooking the lake and occasional signs identifying plant life.

Overall a nice place to spend some time in "nature" without having to drive very far. Several of the TH have picnic tables, playgrounds, and volleyball courts so it does have aspects of a parklike setting, but most of the trail quickly get away from this and for a short time you might be able to fool yourself that you are alone in the great outdoors.

Spent a few days with LiLD and his family up north. LiLD and I took the grandkids to do a little fishing in the am. The ladies joined us a few hours later and we hiked around the lake. The weather was better today so we went to the park afterwards for some frisbee and wiffle ball. The ladies got game, who knew :o ! Afterwards it was back to the cabin for a bbq and game night. The grandkids are wiser then I want to admit. No surprise I had a hard time not talking while giving clues :--: .I had a blast on this trip. Reminded me of yesteryear... So many fond memories! Kind of like a changing of the guards. Many more memories to make. Hopefully they keep inviting me to join! :y: A big thanks to the family, :yr: !
P.S. I tried to leave this out. LiLD caught the only fish....

The trailhead to this hike is located in Woodland Lake, Pinetop, AZ. You take the Turkey Track Trail for .5 miles until you come to a sign that points you in the direction of Walnut Creek. The creek is about .25 away. This trail follows along the creek for awhile and then heads up a hill back toward Woodland Lake. The water is very low in the creek at this time.
