I was planning to do this hike last month but when I started the lightning storms from the night before hadn't quit yet, so I modified it. This time I got the loop in and also did Lousley Hill, which has really nice 360 views. Dark when I started, sunny but still cool when I finished. Felt noticeably cooler on Lousley Hill. Not much traffic on the trails since it was a Tuesday, busier when I finished up.

Starting at the Horse Staging Area, today’s plan was to hike all of Shallmo Wash Trail, a wee bit of Pemberton Trail and all of Escondido Trail.

I started hiking just after 8:00 a.m., when the late autumn sun was still relatively low in the sky. The clouds were wispy, laced with contrails. The temperature was 58℉, and breezy, so I wore my hoodie.

Shallmo Wash Trail is hard. More like cement than dirt. Firm & fast singletrack. I took my best pictures of the day along it: Clouds, low-angle sun shots, and saguaro cactus.

I don’t recall seeing a single saguaro along Pemberton. I did see about a half dozen MTBs. Hoping to add something interesting to my video, I stopped at a small wood bridge waiting for an MTB to roll by for a finger quotes “action” shot. Twenty minutes I waited. No bueno. Of course. 🙄

The sky had become totally overcast, so even though the temperature had ostensibly increased, I kept my hoodie on.

Just after 10:00 a.m., I turned onto Escondido. It starts heading east along the north edge of the mesa. The next two miles are downhill. A couple of MTBs preceeded me, but I didn’t see another one the remainder of my hike. At the bottom of the descent, the trail turns south. It becomes rolling and very twisty as the MTB-optimized route is squeezed between the mesa and McDowell Mountain Rd. If you need a bail, the trail is never more than ⅓ mile from the heavily-trafficked road, and sometimes as close as 200 yds. Most of this hike’s elevation is in this section, in the form of many 50-80 ft. / 4-5% slope climbs.

It would probably be a blast to ride Escondido, but hiking it got to be drudgery without something, anything, to photograph. Maybe in April, when the flowers bloom, it might be better. Oh well: Miles is miles.

This was an exercise in backup plans. Stayed local to hike due to the weather, specifically the threat of lightning. I went up to McDowell Mtn park with the intent that I would have bailout options in the event of lightning. This became an issue almost immediately as I hiked over to the Shallmo Wash Trail from the main staging TH. I had intended to do a big loop with the Shallmo Wash and Escondido trails, but by the one mile mark, I decided to head back to the TH as a cell moved in nearby and the lightning and thunder became more frequent. By the time I got back to the TH, the cell moved and the skies were much lighter. I decided to head out north on the Pemberton Trail with the same idea of going out and back. I continued on this plan with this and the Scenic and Tortoise Trails and then finished up with the Hilltop Trail, which I had never hiked before. I started out thinking I might only get a 2 mile hike in, but I finished up with over 10 for the day. There was no other lightning nearby after that initial cell went through, so I could have done my original backup plan. Nothing special, but the scenery was nice and a little different with the clouds rolling through the mountains.

I've been dying to take the gravel bike out to MMRP for a spin. Didn't want to brave the weekday cross town traffic, but the parks has events scheduled for the next few weekends, so today is the day! Did the Angry Coyote Loop (Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, Escondido, Verde, Pemberton, Delsie, Bluff, Pemberton, Tonto Tank, Pemberton, Lower Shallmo Wash counter clockwise) and finished it off with a lap around the Sport Loop on the competitive track. The Aravaipa Running club is setting up for it Javelina Jundred race this weekend. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails this morning. It was a great ride on the Cutthroat.

First time at MMRP. Parked at the Four Peaks Staging Area around 530am - enough light from full moon and predawn sun to keep the headlamp in the car. Started on Shallmo Wash trail, connected with Pemberton and headed clockwise, kept a controlled, slow pace around 13 mins/mile. A few runners passed me, I passed a few. There was some pleasant sprinkles along miles 4 & 5, a rainbow came out to play after that, and the sunrise was spectacular. Things got dreary after that - there's only so many times I could stare at the surrounding mountains while tripping over rocks and dodging mountain bikes. While the plan was to do a full 18, taking one of the Scenic Trails back to the lot, I walked most of mile 14 and quit after 15.5 or so, walking the rest of the way. Something something humidity and ankle or something.

4 weeks left to Whiskey Row!

Its the AZ summer season, so only option is for night hikes. Been wanting to get as much of the McDowell Mountain Regional Park hikes done that I can, Gate is locked before I start hiking, so have to hike into the park, this limits the options. The regional parks seem to be good places for night hikes because the trails are usually smooth, and mostly flat, especially here at MMRP.

Started at 12:44am and finished up at 4:28am. Spotted two tarantulas on this hike.

decided to make a 11 mile loop, 3.4 miles are on road :( and I got turned around at one road intersection (seems the trails are easier to figure out at night!) adding another 0.5 miles to the hike. Here is how I linked the trails to make the loop:
01. Road 01 (0.6)
02. Shallmo Wash (1.7)
03. Road 02 (0.1)
04. Tortoise Trail (0.7)
05. Road 03 (0.2)
06. Wagner Trail (1.1)
07. Granite Trail (1.9)
08. Bluff Trail (0.9)
09. Granite Trail (1.4)
10. Road Wrong Direction (0.5)
10. Road (2.5)

First of two hikes for the day. (Actually wanted to do a hike at the Ardero TH (in Fountain Hills) only to discovered that it was closed. So this turned out to be my back up for my first hike). Got to the Four Peaks TH just after 6am. There was a beautiful sunrise just starting, framing the Supes and Weaver's Needle. Unfortunately the Shallmo Wash Trail was taking me west so I wasn't able to enjoy it. The Shallmo is a pretty nice trail, though rather misleading in name since it doesn't interact with a wash. No complaints about that, since washes can make for a challenging run. The trail is a nice single track that works its way west and then east around some low lying hills. It was a little muddy in spots from the recent rain, but not too bad. I took the Pemberton for a brief time then hopped onto the Scenic Trail. I was surprised to find out that the Pemberton/Shallmo juncture was the high point for this loop. Both the Pemberton and Scenic were both down hill which made for an easy run. At the Cinch juncture I took that trail (also down hillish) to the Escondido which brought me back to the TH. Very easy run. Weather was a little chilly, but I actually like running in that kind of weather. No wildlife. I did encounter 2 trail runners and a biker.

Just one of my workout loops at MMRP. I started out just early enough that I only needed my headlamp for about the last third of the hike.

I hiked a figure-8 route at MMRP - Shallmo Wash, Pemberton, right at the first intersection with Scenic, then around Scenic in its entirety and back to Pemberton where I turned left, Pemberton back to Scenic, Scenic to Cinch, Cinch to Escondido, and back in on Escondido.

As I was out earlier in the day, I saw more trail users than usual. I saw mountain bikers, other hikers, and trail runners.

A late afternoon into evening loop hike in MMRP: Escondido, Pemberton, and back on Shallmo.

The Four Peaks Trailhead was bustling with activity from workers setting up for Ragnar this coming weekend. A long line of chemical toilets created a long corridor around which I had to drive in order to park. An even longer line of toilets was set up lengthwise through the parking lot. Tents made it (intentionally?) difficult to access the trails there.

I now realize that the signage that I had observed on the trails last Monday is for the upcoming Ragnar race. This matches with similar signage that I had seen last year preceding Ragnar.

Aside from the commotion at the trailhead, the trails were quiet. I was surprised that no one was around when I returned. As I recall, when I hiked there last year, there was still a presence after nightfall.

Another night hike at MMRP: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, and back on Shallmo Wash.

The Javelina Jeadquarters were still being disassembled as I left Four Peaks Trailhead. There were still a few pieces of equipment there when I returned. I saw route markers along nearly my entire hike. The only section that wasn't marked was the last little bit of the Shallmo Wash Trail. It seems that the racers were routed into the actual wash for some reason.

I was passed by a pair of mountain bikers as I was returning on Shallmo Wash. Aside from them, I saw no other trail users.

My pack was slightly heavier tonight due to bringing along my tripod. I took a few shots from the Scenic Trail Ridgeline. It was nice to get exposure bracketed shots at the base ISO of the camera.

While hiking that ridgeline, I saw a number of small reflective dots (in addition to the Javelina Jundred signage). These turned out to be the eyes of birds, most of which flew away as I approached. One did not, however. I approached within about four feet and got a few photos (I hope). I was lucky that it didn't fly away as I fumbled with getting the camera back into the correct mode for shooting hand-held after tripod use.

Another later afternoon / early evening loop hike in MMRP: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, and back on Shallmo Wash.

I saw large tents and the start/finish line for the Javelina Jundred as I hiked through the Four Peaks Trailhead.

I encountered just one trail runner on my hike; I saw him as I was finishing the Scenic Trail.

Later on, when I was maybe a third of the way down Shallmo Wash, I came across a rattlesnake lying across the trail. Perhaps half a mile after that, I saw a very active pack rat hopping around, and scrambling for cover as I approached with my light.

Starting from the Four Peaks TH in MMRP, I hiked: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, and Shallmo Wash.

The evening was cool, at least compared to what I've been accustomed to. I one trail runner, but no mountain bikers.

I also saw a tarantula and a number of mice and/or pack rats. I saw one of these mice run into an improbably small hole. It was a small mouse though and fit without issue.

An early evening loop hike at MMRP...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead, I hiked Shallmo Wash Trail, Pemberton, Scenic, Cinch, and Escondido.

I got to look at more of the erosion caused by last week's rains. The erosion on the Shallmo Wash Trail looked better than it did when I hiked it last Wednesday. Either some trail maintenance has been done or the mountain bikers have beaten the trail back into a somewhat better condition.

I hiked the Scenic Trail from north to south. The northern end of the trail didn't seem that bad, but there were some new and deep ruts on the final descent. The trail also seems rockier in places, though it was plenty rocky to begin with.

Cinch didn't seem to be impacted much by last week's rains.

I saw a few mountain bikers just before sunset. I didn't see any - which kind of surprised me - after it got dark.

A late afternoon & early evening hike in MMRP...

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead, I did a loop comprising the Escondido, Pemberton, and Shallmo Wash trails.

These trails have each seen significant erosion due to the rains of Monday and Tuesday. I encountered two mountain bikers - each indicated that riding was significantly more difficult than normal. One of them said, "I picked the wrong day to do this." Riding difficulty was likely due to both the soft conditions as well as erosion. Normally, I can ride these trails without putting a foot down; had I ridden today, I think I would have had to get off my bike at least half a dozen times.

The Escondido Trail has sections of difficulty where it crosses washes, but there are also sections with ruts in the middle of the trail.

The section of Pemberton that I hiked was probably affected the least, but there's a minor wash near the Trailhead Staging Area which caused me to lose the trail for a short ways. I'm very familiar with these trails - I don't think that this has happened before, well not on the Pemberton anyways.

Shallmo Wash Trail is possibly the most damaged of the trails I hiked. There are sections which run along the top of the bank of Shallmo Wash. There were at least two spots where perhaps half the width of the trail has been washed away.

There were also some muddy and slippery sections. My feet almost slid out from under me in one such section on the Escondido Trail.

I hiked a loop in MMRP with Bob on Wednesday evening. We hadn't made any arrangements to hike together - we just happened to show up at the same place at the same time. We hiked Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (long way), Pemberton, and Shallmo.

Just after passing through the Trailhead Staging Area on Pemberton, we saw a rattlesnake. Later on, when we were on the Shallmo Wash Trail, we saw a small coral snake. It was perhaps seven inches in length, though it was difficult to tell since it wasn't lying straight. I think I have photos of both.

We also saw a two pack rats, one of which was confused by our lights. I wasn't quite quick enough with my camera to get a photo though.

There were even fewer moths than there were on Monday night and far, far fewer than there were last Wednesday when I had to hold the light in my hand to keep the moths away from my head. I was able to wear my headlamp tonight, though they did tend to gather when we stopped to look at the various critters we encountered.

We saw the women's night cycling group on the Pemberton when we were still on Scenic. Later on, we saw them ride through the Four Peaks Trailhead as we were returning to our vehicles.

It's still warmish out, but it's cooler and a lot less humid than it had been in August. I'm liking these temperatures.

Starting from the Four Peaks Trailhead (Horse Staging Area), I did a short loop: Escondido, Cinch, Scenic (the short way), Pemberton, and back on Shallmo Wash.

I saw several mountain bikers, though none with headlamps (yet). There was a pretty sunset.

Temperature was in the low 100s, but with low humidity. It felt pretty good.
