I've been dying to take the gravel bike out to MMRP for a spin. Didn't want to brave the weekday cross town traffic, but the parks has events scheduled for the next few weekends, so today is the day! Did the Angry Coyote Loop (Cinch, Scenic, Pemberton, Escondido, Verde, Pemberton, Delsie, Bluff, Pemberton, Tonto Tank, Pemberton, Lower Shallmo Wash counter clockwise) and finished it off with a lap around the Sport Loop on the competitive track. The Aravaipa Running club is setting up for it Javelina Jundred race this weekend. Lots of bikers and hikers out on the trails this morning. It was a great ride on the Cutthroat.

A new section of the Verde Trail was added to MMRP, so with pretty much all the forests closed, this looked the time to do this.

Started from the main staging area and headed north on the Pemberton Trail, then turned right onto the Verde Trail, which now goes all the way out to and intersects with the Pemberton Trail. Then I took the Verde Trail to its end and turned around. On the way back I took what is now a spur trail (which used to be part of the Verde Trail) to the North Trail and hiked the north half of that loop and the Chuparosa Trail back to the Pemberton and back to the car. Before the North Trail, I saw a hiker coming the other way who warned me of a rattlesnake he saw in a bush that buzzed at him and scared him. He also mentioned it was the first one he ever saw and just moved to AZ a year ago. We talked for a bit and headed on our ways.

Most of the hikers and bikers I saw were very early, beating the heat. Did see one biker who finished right after I did. The weather wasn't too hot for me. The early start and being a little bit higher in elevation seems to have helped a bit. Saw some smoke from a fire in Fountain Hills towards the end of the hike. Looks like it might have been up near the Eagles Nest area.

Another night hike in the McDowell Mountain Regional Park. Decided to hit the north of the park. Wanted to do the Verde and North Trails. Also noticed that HAZ didn't have a GPS trail for Lousley Hill Loop, so I figured I would pop over and get that. Nursery Tank Trail is right in the area so I figured I would see if there was anything to see there (Doubtful, given the time of year)

Verde Trailhead Parking - To get to the park you have to go into a gated community when you turn onto North Tonto Verde Drive road (off of North Fort McDowell Road). Gate was closed when I got there(sometime after 9:30pm). I drove around to see if there was another access point to the road, and there doesn't seem to be one. Luckily, when I drove past the entrance the second time, someone was entering, so I tailgated them and got past the gate. Not sure if the gate is closed during the day, but something to think about. I'm thinking this community thinks this trailhead if just for them. If you can get in, the gate will open automatically going out, so you don't have to worry about getting trapped.

Anyhow got to the trailhead at 10:11pm, temp was a toasty 96 degrees, dropped the fee in the self-pay box and started on the hike.

The planned hike is as detailed below, making for a 8.6 mile hike with 1 mile on the road, and 0.4 miles in a wash to get to all of the trails.

Although it was a "Warm" night, the hike went pretty much without issue, Didn't see anything at Nursery Tank. Got back to the trailhead at 1:18am and headed out.

After work hike. Leg acting up so I was looking for a low impact hike. Started from the North Trail TH around 5pm. I went in on the North for about .3 miles Before getting to the Verde Trail. The Verde Trail is Signed and easy to follow. The juncture with the Nirth Trail is the high point and it is a gradual (very gradual descent) from there. The trail heads primarily in an east northeast direction. The trail is composed of compact dirt with a fine granite top surface. The is only a couple of sections where the trail,is rocky being very smooth for the most part. About ,5 miles on the Verde there is a bench overlooking the Verde River basin to the east. The land actually drops away from here so you get a nice view of the mountains to the east and you get your first glimpse of the Rio Verde community. The desert is very brown right now, though I was surprised at how well the palo verde and iron wood trees seemed to be doing. I'm guessing their deeper root system is helping them persevere this "unmonsoonish season." And there are quite a few of them as you near the Verde community. I can imagine that this area would be very pretty in season. The trail ends near some homes with a small power station just to the east. Touching the gate, I turned around and retraced my steps. Didn't see anyone on the trail, or for that matter, in the park while I was there. On the trail just saw a couple of chipmunks and a bunch of lizards. On the drive out of the park I saw a roadrunner ( love 'em :) ) and a bunch of quail. In one spot, there must have been about 50 that took to the air (briefly) as my car approached. Pretty cool.

MMRP was hosting the Dawn-to-Dusk bike race, so my wife and I drove to the North Trail trailhead at the far end of the park. We did a somewhat convoluted route incorporating the North Trail, Chuparosa, Pemberton, and part of the Verde Trail too.

It had been a while since I last hiked these trails. I was surprised at how green it was. Also, this part of the park is more heavily vegetated since it wasn't hit by the Rio Fire of '95.

All of the trails in this area were in good condition.

We saw a bunch of bikes while we were on the Pemberton. We were able to make a sort of loop in that section by hiking a service road and the 168th St access spur. After observing the direction of bike travel on the way in, I chose a path which would have us walking against bike traffic (which made it easier for us to see them and get out of the way).

On the way back, we hiked part of the Verde Trail and sat on Nick and Jen Morigi's bench for a few minutes. This bench provides a nice late day view of the setting sun reflecting off of Four Peaks.
