Riverside Walk 2 Miles - 75' AEG
This is actually a very scenic walk on a paved trail that leads to The Narrows. Don’t expect solitude—unless you’re on the first bus to Stop 9. Accessible to all ages and experience levels. Worth checking out when in the park, even if you don’t plan on doing The Narrows.

Zion Narrows 1 Mile 20' AEG
We brought our own water shoes and changed into them at the end of the Riverside Walk. Most people rented water socks, shoes, and wooden hiking sticks. Bring trekking poles if you have them. The water was typically calf-deep, but you couldn’t see what was below the murky surface. We only went in about half a mile, until we saw people going “nips deep” in the water—that was enough of a sample for us. Very pretty, albeit slow going. As with most of the park, don’t expect solitude.

Emerald Pools – Zion 3.48 Miles - 418' AEG
My favorite of the day. We hit the Lower, Middle, and Upper Emerald Pools. We had planned to hike from Stop 6, past the pools, to Stop 5 at the Zion Lodge, but the bridge across the river wasn’t scheduled to open for another week, so we did an out-and-back instead. In retrospect, a good hike would have been from Stop 6 to Stop 4
Upper Emerald Pool ==> [ youtube video ]

Sand Bench Trail – Zion 4.26 Miles 801 AEG
I did this as a filler hike on the way back. The namesake sand gets annoying after a while, and since the trail is also used for horseback rentals, the sand is chewed up and littered with horse apples and runoff. Go counter-clockwise if you're doing the loop, or clockwise if you're just planning an out-and-back.

Lower and middle pools were not impressive. Upper pool was much larger.

Hiked to upper, then middle, then lower pool, then back out, via the Kayenta Trail both ways from bus stop 6.

Mid morning hike with the wife. (There were quite a few trail closures at the park which impacted trail options. Case in point, the bridge at the lodge which allowed access to the Emerald Pools was closed which forced us to start from grotto 6). We took the shuttle to grotto 6 and hiked a portion of the Kayenta to reach the Emerald Pools.

I initially thought the pools were part of the Virgin River, but in fact, these pools are the result of water that seeps out of the cracks of the stone cliffs. All the pools tie into the Kayenta Trail. I wasn’t keeping track of mileage, but I’d say it was a little over a mile before we reached the first spur that led to the Lower Pools. It was signed and said it was .2 miles to the pools. We decided to bypass the spur and continued on. Almost immediately after that we came upon the Middle Emerald Pool. This is on the Kayenta Trail and is probably the least spectacular of the pools. It was nice and shady (one of the few shady spots on the trail) with a small stream passing through. Not much of a pool. Crowded, too crowded to really enjoy. Continued on and within a couple of tenths of a mile came to the spur that led to the Upper Pools. It was signed and said .3 miles to the pool. The climb was very sandy, rocky and uphill. I know Velva felt it was more .3 miles. Very little shade and no wind. These conditions were not favorable. Had to stop several times along the way. But we made it! This was the biggest of the pools and you could actually see where the water was seeping from the cliff. Very cool, but also very crowded. Still, there was a sizable area around the pool and plenty of shade, so we made ourselves at home enjoyed the views and sheltered from the sun. Spent about 30 minutes taking pictures and enjoying the shade. There was a consistent turnover of people around the pool; almost had it to ourselves a couple of times. Hiked back down and rested at the spur juncture. I would have loved to continue on the Kayenta, but Velva wasn't feeling it. (I'm pretty sure you can continue on the Kayenta and looped back to the Lower Emerald Pool, but that would add some mileage to the hike). I did hike down the Kayenta a little bit and not far off from the spur juncture there is another nice pool, and you can see the stream flowing off a rock cliff. (This is actually the waterfall that you can see from the Lower Pools). Dragged Velva down to see it and it was enough to convince her that we should visit the Lower Pools as well. We hiked back to where the Lower Pool spurred from the Kayenta and hiked down to the pool and the waterfalls. Very Nice! Probably the best of the pools. It was a small pool, but the waterfalls made it more than worthwhile. Because of the bridge closure at the lodge, we had to hike back along the Kayenta and return to Grotto 6.

The trails weren't too bad. It was just hot and too sunny for the wife. Trails were pretty crowded, but if you were willing to wait you got some nice shots of the pools and the falls without too many tourists. No wildlife.

Hiked the Emerald Pools trail with Victoria in Zion National Park.

We hiked the Emerald Pools from the Grotto trailhead and bus stop as the river crossing at the lodge was out of service (and seems to have been for some time looking at the printed park maps).

This was a pretty and easy trail, it was a bit muddy on the entrance but flat enough that it didn't really matter. Because of the low difficulty the trail was popular and got quite crowded as the day wore on.

Because of the recent rains, the pools were more brown than green, the flow seems to have churned them up a bit. However, the springs that feed them were well flowing waterfalls the largest of which was over 100' in height. So what the pools lacked in aesthetics the waterfalls made up for.

This was a good spot in Zion and definitely worth doing (probably more as a secondary hike after doing the West Rim trail or other core hike)

Zion has changed things up quite a bit since I was last here, you can no longer drive in you take a tram. You can drive in if you are heading through the park but the road to the lodge is closed. We drove to the junction and parked there (not a lot of spaces available along the road). From the Junction we hiked along the road for 3 miles to the lodge. The road walk was actually very pleasant with lots to see. You actually see more walking than you do in the crowded tram. At the lodge we saw some large water falls and decided to take the Emerald Pools trail to see them. Very impressive falls with a nice trail to the lower middle and upper falls. We headed back via the Grotto and caught a tram to the end of the park road and returned to our starting point via the tram.

The tram system is rather nice if you are hiking the trails in the park, you park in town and tram it to the trail head. I found out many schools were out for a 3 week spring break so the park was full of Californians, about half the cars. I had to keep telling myself that they are people too ](*,) . On the second day we drove to the east end of the park and it was much less crowded, of coarse it was snowing. Looks like the trails on this end of the park would be more interesting and not as busy. Ginny and I decided we will have to come back to this area and do some of these hikes. We also visited Bryce but it was 12 degrees with 30 inches of snow, no hiking this time. We then headed to Jacob lake there was just as much snow and the road closed at Jacob lake, no hiking there this time either. We headed back via the reservation stopped in sanders to buy yarn for my rugs and headed to Lubbock. You guessed it no hiking there either.

After deciding Angel's Landing was going to be to much for the group, we went and explored Emerald Pools. Neat area. See 4 minute video below of the entire trip.

The lower pools were closed when we visited, but the upper pools were totally worth it (even if we were exhausted after Angel's Landing). Very lovely, although a bit crowded.

This was part of our Might five trip 2016. We completed all 5 Parks in 5 days in Utah.

The mighty five trip was something My girlfriend and I had been wanting to do for a while now, but finally made it happen this year.

We drove up on Sunday and hit our first park on the way up, Zion. Zion is one of our favorites, but since we have both been here before we only did one trail, Emerald pools. We took the tram to the lodge and from the lodge headed up to upper emerald pools. The views were awesome as usual. The weather was very warm but it did not stop the park from being full of people.

On our drive in while waiting at the tunnel there were 2 roadies her were turned away from the tunnel since bikes are not allowed. They hitched a ride with us through the tunnel. After our short stay at Zion we headed to stop 2 Bryce which is where we spent the first night.

This was a great one!

We caught the first shuttle of the day, exiting at the Grotto stop, like most folks on the bus. They were all headed to Angel's Landing, while we had a bigger adventure on our plates. Shouldering our packs and heading up the trail, it was a constant stream of questions. Some people wanted to know more, while others seemed downright terrified when we described what we would be doing.

Fun canyon with plenty of nice rappels. The rappels were varied, as was the canyon itself, making for a good day out there. Great, amazing views of the main Zion canyon from the last and 2nd to last rappels.

Much of the hike up we were in full shade, thanks to the early start :D Really, the weather all day was pretty delightful for mid-June. So far as we were on trail, the path is in good shape up to Scout's Lookout.

A nice, short little hike. We visited each of the Lower, Middle, and Upper Emerald Pools. Spent some time on the way back checking out the final rappel of Behunin Canyon, and just generally enjoying good color on the cliffs thanks to increasing cloud cover. It was another hot day in southern Utah, so the wind on our way back via the Kayenta Trail was a welcome relief. We arrived back at our vehicle with the idea to drive through the tunnel and hike the Canyon Overlook Trail, but it began pouring the moment we opened the trunk. Well, Zion is close for us, so another day for that one.

This is a good hike if you can concentrate on your surroundings while ignoring the swarms of ill-prepare tourists. For moments of being alone, choose something else.

A beautiful day hiking more of the Zion trails. Slightly quieter today as far as trail traffic. Assisted a French climber contact SAR. His climb partner fell 20-30 meters and with a serious head injury and unconscious. Love those SAR people and the skills they bring when needed.

Hiked from Zion Lodge and came down to the Grotto Trailhead. Had hiked Angel's Landing earlier. This was a pretty hike. The pools, we hit all 3, were a nice diversion. Unfortunately this hike is where the tourists go -- flip flops, paper shopping bags, no trail etiquette, etc, etc. Other than that a nice quick easy hike in the park.

Day 5 - Hiking Day in Zion National Park

As much as I wanted to do Angel's Landing or the Narrows, it was a Saturday and that means you start at the Crack of Dawn and still run into hordes of people...Plus I wanted to be back in Camp late afternoon, since the Rendezvous Organizers were putting on a Dutch Oven Dinner that Evening...Hadn't been sleeping well on this Trip, due to not being able to shut the mind off at night, even though I was tired...Plus getting out of that warm Sleeping Bag into that chilly air before you even see a hint of Sun was very difficult. It's much easier to get up that early when you've committed to doing something with other people... ;) When you're on your own...well... I also knew that no matter where I went in the Park, I would be in serious Camera mode, so it basically came down to doing something shorter...

I did make a longer Loop out of this just to get a little more playtime and exercise in...Basically, I did every Trail between the Zion Lodge and the Grotto...Got off the Shuttle at the Zion Lodge, took the Grotto Trail to the Grotto, crossed the Bridge over the Virgin River, then took the Kayenta Trail back to the Emerald Pools...Hit the Middle Pool first, then found a use Trail going up the Hill towards the Upper Pool...Turns out, it doesn't do much, other than parallel the Official Trail up, so eventually I cut over and got on it and continued up to the Upper Pool. I did meet a new Friend on the "use" Trail though... :D

Lots of People.... Found an out-of-way Rock and had a little Lunch, then went back down...Took a little side Trail and ended up on top of another one of the small Waterfalls going over the Edge into the Lower Pool area...It was starting to get very Windy and I got a Shower from the Water blowback...There is another Trail that continues on from there, but it was barricaded off, so I backtracked and got back on the Main Trail...They also had one of the Trails to the Lower Pool barricaded off as well, so I had to backtrack on the Kayenta to another Intersection and then down to the area above the Lower Pool. Looks like they're doing permanent Reroutes of these Trails.

Lots of Photo Ops...And then, the Wind brought in more Clouds making the Shadows dance across the immense Formations that blew you away at every turn.... :) I took a lot of Photos... After attempting to stalk a Rafter of Wild Turkeys in the brush below the Lower Pool, I continued on the Emerald Pools Trail down to the Bridge by the Zion Lodge...From there, I took a Riverside Trail that I had seen from the Kayenta Trail back to the Grotto...Nice Sandy Trail that follows the Banks of the Virgin River the whole way...More Photo Ops... :D

I took the Shuttle that headed deeper in, so I could familiarize myself with the rest of the Route...Saw some Rock Climbers at Big Bend climbing a sheer Rock Face...I think I'll stick with going down a Rope.... Caught a Glimpse of a Mule Deer along the Banks of the Virgin River and saw some more beautiful areas...Soooo much to see here...I know that I will be back... :D

Back at the Escape after a nice little Hike with Awesome Scenery! The Pools are great. The Middle Pool area is just Ok, but the Upper and Lower Pools were pretty cool! I could do this Hike again, maybe if I can catch it on a slower day with fewer people...

I'll let the Photos show you the Day...I certainly took enough of them...130 to be exact... Sooo, I guess throwing 36 at you guys isn't so bad... :sl:
