I've been to Lower La Barge a few times and usually prefer hiking new places, but ishamod and TboneKathy had never been to La Barge, and I'd had my eye on Peak 2830 for a while, so this ended up being a good local option. We started from Boulder Canyon Trailhead just after sunrise and started up the hill, with great views in both directions...Canyon Lake behind us and then Battleship, Weaver's Needle, and many other peaks ahead of us. From that angle, Peak 2830 looks like a narrow ridge of rock that would be far more challenging to climb than it turned out to be.

We stayed on Boulder Canyon #103 around the west side of Battleship, and as 2830 came back into view, it looked steep but much more climbable from the side profile. There were plenty of people out on the trails, including some campers near the Second Water intersection, then more hikers/backpackers along Boulder Canyon near Battleship.

We took a short break before leaving the trail, and TboneKathy waited below while ishamod and I started the climb up to the peak. The lower part of the ascent had a lot more loose rock, but the steeper part of climb was more solid, and the brush wasn't overly cumbersome...just a few spots where we stopped to trim branches out of the way. Route finding really wasn't an issue--there was one main chute that took a fairly direct shot at the saddle between 2830 on the left and 2803 on the right that provided the easiest path up. It was a fun scramble, comparable to Picketpost in places.

Once we hit the saddle, we followed the ridge left toward 2830. That stretch was reminiscent of a miniature Battleship, following a narrow ridge to the north, scrambling toward the peak...in this case, while overlooking Battleship. As someone else pointed out in a triplog, there's a surprising amount of bighorn sheep droppings up there. The actual summit and the register sit on top of a few large boulders that we scrambled up, and the peak provides a unique perspective on Battleship, looking down the east side from slightly above, and great views looking straight down into La Barge.

[ youtube video ]

We enjoyed the views from the top, took some pictures, and signed the register, which was placed in 2010 and refers to Peak 2830 as "Destroyer Peak"...I assume that's an unofficial name keeping with the naval theme given the proximity to Battleship. There were lots of familiar HAZ names in the register, and it looks like the peak has been gaining in popularity, with a lot more visits in the last few years, the most recent of which was a group of five earlier this month.

Someone had left a partially-empty bottle of Bullet bourbon at the summit, and ishamod took a drink before we started down. With TboneKathy waiting below and a stop at La Barge still planned, we didn't take the time to go over to 2803 and headed back down the way we came up. Ishamod narrowly missed a potentially bad fall on the way down, but some catclaw stopped him from sliding farther, possibly marking the the first time anyone has been thankful for catclaw...and providing a handy reminder that alcohol and steep off-trail hiking may not be a wise combination :).

Back safely at the bottom, we backtracked to the unofficial trail toward the south end of Battleship and followed it over the saddle and down into La Barge. We'd seen plenty of people around Battleship, but we had the canyon to ourselves. There was some nice fall color in the leaves, and some of the pools were full of very active minnows. We took a short break in the shade before we headed out.

We hiked back out via La Barge Creek, where there was a lot more fall color, then reconnected with #103. Even in the late afternoon, there were a lot of hikers on the trail, probably hiking in to catch the sunset. Our timing worked well, and we got to enjoy the setting sun as we finished the hike and wrapped up just before dark.

Brought some new people to one of my favorite trails! It was an absolutely beautiful day for a hike! Perfect weather! Trailhead pretty full by the time we got there at 9a. Road was in decent condition for the minivan. Lots of people out and about, including some big groups.

Saw the most amazing amounts of butterflies in the Hackberry springs area. It was delightful!

The entire Saturday was open so we decided to knock out as much stuff as we could out of First Water. The plan was to return to Battleship and La Barge Box and visit Peak 2830 for the first time.

Let me just say... Peak 2830 was the highlight of the day. This peak really tied the area together in my mind. I really like when you can see hikes you have done before from different angles. Peak 2830 scratched the off-trail itch.

For some reason this small peak doesn't get a lot of visitors. The last entry in the register was in 2018 and the one before that was 2013.

I've been wanting to tag this one for a while now.

Once you leave Boulder Canyon, there is no path. I tried following JJ and Johnlp's track from 2013 to the best of my ability. The paths of attack look almost impossible from Boulder Canyon. Once you begin making your way up, however, you soon realize that isn't the case. A few slick rock areas were challenging, on a similar level to Flatiron or Picketpost. When I reached the saddle the views were pretty good. Making my way over to actual peak I was blown away by the amount of poop everywhere. This place is definitely a favorite bedding down area. There is a short, exposed scramble to make the peak. Once up top, it too was coated in tons of the black pellets. I signed the summit log, and it appears the last visitors up here, besides the sheep, were the aforementioned folks in 2013.

Going down I decided to duck down into Labarge, again following their track. Up to this point in time, that is my biggest hiking decision making blunder. To go the 1/4 mile or however long it took around an hour. It was the thickest, most overgrown, off-trail exploring I have ever done. Never again.

La Barge Box (I think it is called) is my favorite place in all the Superstitions that I have traveled to thus far. It is otherworldly. I sat and relaxed for a bit while watching the fish go about their business.

I have had my eye on this peak since I did Geronimo Head with Rockadoodledude. It is the sharp pointed one near LaBarge and Battleship. JohnLP expressed and interest in it as well so today was the day. We went in via The First Water TH and then up Boulder Canyon. From there it was off trail right up the side of the mountain. It wasn't nearly as brushy as I had expected.

From up top the views on top of 2830 are Superior! Looking down into LaBarge and across at Battleship was just awesome. We decided to take a brushy ravine down the back side into the box and then made our way back to Boulder Canyon via the connector trail.

Great hike!

Anyone who has been on Battleship Mountain in the Superstitions has seen the jagged Peak 2830. http://hikearizona.com/photo=382831. I have been wanting to climb it for a couple years, and JJ and have been talking of doing it for about a year.

We began the off trail departing from the Boulder Canyon trail about a third of a mile past the use trail to Battleship/LaBarge Box. The route we chose going up is steep but not too brushy or dangerous. The views from up top are of course outstanding. We scrambled to 2803 first then over to 2830 where John checked out and signed the register. Only two groups since the register was established in 2010.

We chose to descend a brushy ravine going down into the beginnings of LaBarge Box. Not recommended in shorts, which I was wearing. Soon the bushwhacking was over and we were in the creek bottom leading into the box. The box never gets old. Lots of little fish in the pools. Not much flow.

The hike out was uneventful until we saw a brightly colored object a quarter mile away up a hill side. Thinking it could possibly be a lost or injured hiker, John set off on a rescue mission only to find another mylar balloon in the wilderness. Oh well, at least he cleaned up the garbage. : app :

Lunch at Del Taco after was amusing. Thanks for everything John. Great day! :)
