@outdoor_lover sure knows how to pick them. I missed the 1/2020 hike and thought I'd check this one out. Great views and pretty easy terrain. I only picked up 4 cholla grenades. I took a little different route.

Six years ago I did a hike and started my triplog by saying:
"This hike is all Hansenaz’s fault. (I’ve never met the gentleman, but I still blame him)" :)

Well, for this hike I say,
"This hike is all Outdoor_Lover's fault. (I’ve never met the young lady, but I still blame her)". :)

On New Years Day, Outdoor_Lover, and her Dozen-Plus New Year's Day Crew, hiked up Bart Benchmark 3127, and after viewing all triplogs, and photosets, I know they all had a great time.
They had great views, and great "HAZ" camaraderie - Bravo to all of them.

Outdoor_Lover said that none of her Dozen Plus Crew saw a "Bart Benchmark" on the hill named "Bart Benchmark". Some located Bart's reference marks, but not Bart himself.
That was enough enticement for me to get up there, and look around, and try to find the little guy.
I'm sure Bart would have wanted to join the party.

If Bart is still up there, and I locate it - Excellent.
If I don't locate Bart, I'll save face, and just say someone took it off the hill.
And - Even if Bart doesn't make an appearance, he was there in spirit, on New Years day.

Usually, locating a benchmark is not difficult, IF you have its datasheet of info, which includes the BM's LAT/LONG. Bart is one of those benchmarks with no readily available datasheet, so the next step is to rely on the arrows on the BM's reference mark disks. If the arrows were aimed perfectly, by the surveyors, then where the two extended "arrow aiming" lines cross, you should find the benchmark.
My experience on those arrows aiming correctly is maybe, 50%, or less.
=====================
So, off I went, to get a bit of exercise, and enjoy some views - And just maybe locate a little disk called Bart.

I started out before official sunrise. Once on the second or third bump, I looked back and saw the sun come up over the easterly mountains. A very nice view.

Once atop BB 3127, I easily located the summit log, where Outdoor_Lover and her Dozen Plus Crew, gathered for their celebration of New Years.
[ photo ]

I then easily located Bart's two reference marks, and attempted to line up their arrows. That took awhile due to the far distances the RMs are, from the top of the hill.
It turns out that the two RM lines cross each other at least 50 feet northwest of the high area of the hill top. I etched an "X" in the soft ground and dug down anyway - Nothing.
At least one of those RM's arrows is very, very wrong.
Not good.

Next - I used a little garden shovel to pierce the ground - Up and down each RM's extended arrow line.
My thought was, stab the ground to the hilt of the tool, and try to find the top of hidden bedrock, as that's what surveyors usually use to secure the Barts of the world on mountains and hilltops.
I failed to locate Bart on those RM lines. I found alot of small rocks, but no bedrock.

The last thing I do on a mountain is - Sign the Summit Log.

After a whopping 3 hours and 43 minutes on the hilltop, and dozens of holes and shovel stabbings, I stopped my search.
With great frustration, I logged into the summit log, and left BB 3127.

================

Well - Guess what ? - I got about 100 feet off BB 3127 and stopped, and went back up the hill.
I had one of these.
"A clear (and often sudden) understanding of a complex situation."
YEP - - - - A Brainstorm.

Bart WAS at the party, front and center.
Happy New Year

Another most enjoyable New Year's Day hike with 18 fellow hikers. Thanks to Outdoor_Lover (Pam) for organizing this ninth in a series as well as all the preceding eight. The views of Bartlett Reservoir and the snow dusted Mazatzals were dazzling. The camaraderie among 19 people enjoying the hike was a great beginning for the new year. As usual, Pam's oatmeal cookies and chocolate dipped strawberries were delicious and the champagne was delightful.

Thanks outdoor_lover for organizing a great outing. It was so awesome ... your baked cookies and chocolate covered strawberries illustrated the effort your made to make the hike great.
It was great to finally put a face to some of the dedicated hikers that post awesome triplogs.
Hope to hike with you guys soon.

Left our vehicles at the roadside “trailhead “, greeted by a cold north wind our horde departed in search for Bart. Thankfully the recent rains made the scree on the steep slopes a non factor. Thanks to Pam for researching this peak and supplying Bart and the goodies we enjoyed at the high point. Nice to see Oregon-Hiker again , thanks for bringing the tripod and taking the excellent photos. Nice to get in my second “hike “ :D with joe bartels. Instead of taking a new alternate route down with Ray decided to accompany Pam , Angela , Mr and Mrs Slofolks on the official alternate route allowing me the chance to crawl under the boundary fence. Nice seeing and hiking with all that came today.

My first time out this close to Bartlett in 19.5 years. Wow, been missing out on some nice terrain.

Luckily there was plenty of shoulder parking room for a small army. Pam's New Years resolution is apparently go big or go home. Turnout was good then Prince and The Revolution, I mean Terry and his entourage pulled up.

Naturally we all hiked exactly a tenth of a mile apart except for photo ops. There is a majestic saguaro heading up the first or second hill. Based on Pam's advice I took a rarely used trekking pole. It proved to be a valuable asset on a couple steep grades as a third point of contact. Which was a tad concerning thinking about the return. Cholla was abundant. Per usual, if you respect the cholla then the cholla respects you.

Wind was a tad vicious. Almost put my goggles on but didn't want the cool kids to think I was some kind of freak. No clue why Cathy hangs out with Greg's driftwood personality but man is he fast! Kinna embarrassing, I was the last one to the peak.

Pam's New Year's Peak festivities went smooth despite James and Olivia snubbing us this year. There was chat of a sub group taking a loop return. Which would've been cool but I made a promise to be home early and I can't just "drive" by Squaw.

Heading down was much easier than anticipated. Thanks to last week's saturated ground, it was more of a pillow walk vs a slidefest as anticipated.

With a half mile to go I took my first and only sip of water to flush out the champaign from earlier.

While I lack bubbly charisma, it was great to see everyone! Sorry, didn't really get to meet Wendy/Lisa/TheRevolution but looked like they had fun. The hike, terrain and views were much better than anticipated. I look forward returning to this neck of the Tonto woods a little more often.

It was nice to meet a lot of HAZers I hadn't met before and see some I had. Still not sure about all the snarky comments about wearing shorts. It really wasn't that cold out. :?

I arrived a few minutes late which was nice as all the bottles and such had already been distributed to others. I like going light when able. :y:

I really enjoyed this outing and the camaraderie. The champagne added to the charm and went especially well with the chocolate covered strawberries. The cookies were nice too and Bart was a special touch.

Happy New Year! :app:

Our first group hike with HAZ since joining. As a bonus it was in our neck of the woods so the drive time was minimal. Some folks drove long distances and that shows what an active membership HAZ has. Or perhaps it was the lure of free Champagne, homemade cookies, and chocolate covered strawberries :-k . I'm not going to judge even though this group had some very enthusiastic semi-pro drinkers. :D

The climb up was...up. All off trail in soft ground after the recent rains. The softness was a blessing on the return or it would surely would have been a slip fest. There were a couple of cholla in the leg incidents, one being me. First time I was really glad I brought my Leatherman tool. On another occasion I flicked one off my shoe with a perfect chip shot golf stroke with my trekking pole. It flew gracefully through the air and landed smack dab on Cathy's thigh. Couldn't have done it better if I'd tried. Joe, @joebartels commented in his triplog that he was the last one to summit. While technically true, it was only because he got behind me for the final 200 feet of gain to encourage me with an electric cattle prod. NOTE: Organizer Pam had a statute that the party doesn't begin until the last hiker is up. I guess Joe took it upon himself to see that the wait time on me was kept to a minimum. Thanks for the company near the top Joe! :) . NOTE 2: From the looks of some of the folks that summited first, I don't think they actually wait on anyone.

The views were fantastic in all directions as everyone's photosets will attest. It was great to meet so many folks whose triplogs we've been reading and enjoying over the past year. Thanks to Pam, @outdoor_lover for organizing the event and providing some great eats and drinks at the top! We joined Pam, Tom, @Daytripper, and Angela, @tibber on a different route down making it a kind of reverse lasso loop instead of an out-n-back. Saw a fantastic old saguaro on this route. [ photo ] We had lunch with Ray, Pam, and Angela in Cave Creek on the way home. Good times!

Another New Year in the books. We set an Attendance Record this year. I have learned over the past 9 Years, to be pretty liberal with my estimate as far as supplies go. I always count the "Interested", unless I'm told otherwise, because there are usually last minute commitments. And at times, there have been very last minute surprises in the parking lot and sometimes even after we actually top out. We even had a Flat Denny once. He didn't drink or eat much, but he was the Life of the Party... [ photo ] My liberal estimate always pays off and this year was no exception. Terry ended up bringing the entire Harem out. There was another guy with them so Terry must have been in a sharing mood. All I can say is the ride in that truck looked very cozy. It was all good, more supplies than usual went up, but more people to help haul, so it all worked! It was a thirsty bunch too. 4 bottles of Champagne were depleted in record time!

Chilly at the start and the breeze at the cars had me worried about what awaited us at the top. Pretty windy all the way up, but the top was a pleasant surprise as the wind suddenly disappeared. Perfect Timing. The sun which showed itself early on, disappeared for most of the way up, but reappeared on the way down. All in all weather wise, it was a very good day, with some remaining snow on some of the Peaks adding to already stellar views.

The terrain change in this hike was amazing from mid November. The rains both in November and recently over Christmas, have transformed both the desert and the footing. In mid November, the desert was as dry as could be and the lake was very low. The game trail was very defined but the footing was pretty treacherous in places, with a hard packed surface combined with fine scree. Now, new grass is coming in strong, the trail is much fainter and with the Christmas rains, the ground was soft, making the ascents and descents way way better. The lake looks like it's even come up a bit. If the scenery could be improved on from the last hike, Mother Nature delivered just that. This area is well known for it's Spring Wildflower Show and this hike could be off the charts in a stellar spring. That may happen again with our winter rains in the past month. I may be seen on this hike again in March. :D

The Party and the Company were excellent as always! Always great to see old faces and get to meet some new faces as well. And they were all very patient. Due to extremely clogged ears, I felt like I was yelling all day instead of my usual just "loud" voice. I have a hard time believing that it wasn't annoying to at least a few, if not more.

On a Personal Note, it didn't take me long to fall in love with this Event and I'm so glad I've made it a tradition. I've never had a regret. The HAZ community is unrivaled and although I generally hike solo, the people that this Event attracts, always ROCK! I am also extremely grateful for this Event. 2019 was my worst year ever since I reconnected with the outdoors and started hiking in earnest. Only 2 hikes total this last year and both were related to my New Year's Events. My total Commitment to keeping the Tradition forced me to get out. Without those 2 Hikes, I would have completely bombed in 2019. 1 1/2 Years of gaining weight with literally no exercise has taken it's toll. By mid October I started to turn things around, but I was still in poor shape when I did this hike in November. If I had been in that kind of shape yesterday, the SloFolks would have kicked my pumpkin and been waiting for awhile at the top. As it was, the positioning of the marching line changed several times and I pretended to be the sweeper at least part of the time. But 2 1/2 months of weight loss and gym time have helped, although I still have a ways to go. I at least wasn't feeling the Performance Anxiety that usually rears it's ugly head when hiking with others. After a continuing lifetime habit of smoking, I'm still slow, but I hope to change even that in 2020. With some more weight loss, conditioning and hopefully smoke free soon, I am looking forward to a much better year this year. HAZ has always been an awesome place for me. I haven't contributed much the last couple of years, mainly because I just haven't been out much. I hope to also change that this year.

A Huge Thanks to all that attended this Year and to all those that have shown up for the past eight years. I appreciate it more than you'll ever know. And a big Thank You to Joe for not only participating in a few of my Hikes, but also for continuing to host a remarkable Site where Hikers, both new and old, have a place to go, learn and participate. This Event would not be possible without this amazing Resource.

I didn't take very many Photos this Time. I took quite a few in November. Now that some HAZers have seen these views in person, I have added those views to my original Photoset, although the air was way dirtier last time due to the wind and dryness.

I wish everyone the Best in this New Year of 2020. Cheers!

It was going to be a cold one and it sure was to start. Luckily, the bar on top wasn't as windy or cold. Pam sent some of us up with the champagne and snacks before we started on our way. The group size was pretty amazing which made for fun photos providing great scale both as we went up and then at times when we were spread out. Can't recall the last time I hiked with such a large group. The harem is pretty fast so they were the first everywhere. Altho Terry hung back at times to hike with the rest of us HAZers.

It's funny on the elevation profile it didn't look that steep but it was. Fortunately though, it was short. However, there were a few times when I felt very close to the ground in front of me  . The cholla weren't as bad as feared nor was the slipping since the dirt was soft from all the rain. This was particularly helpful when we hiked back down.

People would stop from time to time to get in a few words and then continue the mission. I tried to position myself to get some good movies and photos. The light today was a bit difficult at times but I just worked with it. It was also very windy so my videos will have extra music in place of the intense wind noise. Fortunately, our own LosDosSloFolks can be heard on all three videos (I credit him so that you know when it's his song). Greg has been letting me use his wonderful guitar music for a couple months now.

On the way down we took a different route once at the end of the ridgeline. I enjoyed the scenery here and we got to see some cool rock formations and some great saguaros. But there was no climbing over the fence this time; instead we had to go under. As we got closer to the road it opened up a bit so it was a very nice that last little bit.

It was great to finally meet Greg and the newly retired Cathy. It was also good to hike with Todd, Garth, Rob and Tom whom I had never met. Would have liked to have more time to ask more questions. The "Tibber" likes to know the rest of the story. :) And this was my second hike with Joe, the last time being at this event two years ago. I always enjoy our quick conversations; learn something new every time. And it was nice to hike with Larry, Ray and Pam again; even if it's only once a year, it's better than not at all. Anyway, it turned out to be a grand day and a great way to start off 2020.

I've included some of the other participants photos as well, thus the videos are a little longer. Sometimes the photos, movies may seem out of order but the other HAZers were sometimes at other parts of the trail from where I was at the time.

Looking for a place to have an upcoming Party... This little Bump on the Map looked like nothing, but there was just something about it and it's Location, that Intrigued. So I decided to check it out. It's a done deal, it's Perfect for what I want.

I haven't done any Hiking really, since New Year's Day and I'm pretty out of shape right now, but I'm working hard on that these days. I've decided not to reveal this Hike's location until I put up my Event and I'm only Posting limited views. My Pictures simply can't do some of these Views justice. You have to be there to really appreciate it. I'd rather you experience it for the first time in Person, rather than through my Photos. It's a Roller Coaster that some of you may curse me for later, until you turn around as you top each hill... :D

I took my Time, occasionally stopping for Photos or to extract a Cholla Ball. The Cholla isn't that bad actually and I just picked up a couple on the way up. On the way down I picked up more because down was steep and foot placement was precious in places... It was very windy yesterday and once I topped out, it was more than very windy. I took in the Views for a bit, but eventually I moved to the other side to escape the Wind and eat some Lunch. On the way down, I decided to skip the last 2 "Hills" and take a slightly gentler descent on an adjoining Ridgeline. Those last two hills were a bit steep going up and going down them would have seriously increased my chance of falling on my pumpkin, which is something I had managed to avoid at that point. Coming down from the Peak was no Picnic either. The Steepness wasn't the Problem, it was that wonderful fine scree that your Tread just won't grab and hold... The Adjoining Ridgeline solved most of that. If you decide to go back over the Entire Roller Coaster, you can add probably another 100 or so feet to the AEG...

This is an Off-Trail Hike, but the Bushwacking is minimal. Most of the actual Bushwacking was when I took the Alternate Route down. But even that wasn't bad, it was mostly Brittle Bush. And although it was Off Trail, there was a Game Trail most of the way. Judging from where that Trail went in places, I was guessing Javelina. They are short enough to "fit" under some of the Bushes and Trees. And I found a few prints that fit as well. I never saw any Deer or Sheep Scat, but further up, I realized that it wasn't just Javelina using this Trail and judging from the Scat, it was a Cat... And that made sense as well, as the Higher you got, the more Rock Clusters and Cliffs there were. Great Cat Country! That Trail would disappear at times, but not for long. It was very well defined and it went all the way to the Peak.

I collected more than a few Cholla Balls on the way down and I'm thankful I wore my Gators. But they didn't save me when I was inspecting a Fence and I brushed up against an actual Teddy Bear. Just above the Gator. Welcome back to Hiking the Arizona Desert... I hit the Road about 700 Feet from my Vehicle and Road Walked it back.

It was a good Day and my Instincts about this little Peak were confirmed. The Wind kept the Heat at Bay but it made the Air Quality not so good for Photos. But still a little Gem with some Sweet Views all the way up. And it wasn't just the Views, there are some cool Rock Formations, a Quartz Vein and some pretty old Saguaros. A couple of the Saguaros were actually Purple... I'll Post the Event sometime after Thanksgiving for those that are interested. This will be my 9th Year. The Photos are blah, but you guys have enjoyed my choices before, so I hope you'll trust me with this one...
