I did a short out and back on the MT heading east from where the MT crosses New River Road. Just a quick jaunt to find four geocaches. It was really nice out after yesterday's rain. There's a port-a-john right there at start too. It's also pretty noisy for a bit near where the trail turns south from the nearby gravel pit, or whatever that is.

My goal is to hike or bike all 240 miles of the Maricopa Trail. I am doing one segment per month or so.

If you don’t have a shuttle driver, as I did, or are actually hiking, hike out & back from the Agua Fria Trailhead to Lake Pleasant Parkway, which is 9.1 miles, 430 AEG (accumulated elevation gain). The southern ⅔ of the segment to 119th Ave. are either for locals, or not worth it.

The initial climb up to Waddell Canal was too steep & slippery for this old man to pedal up. I walked it. I also walked some of the steep & twisty dips where the trail crosses culverts.I figure I walked a mile altogether. Some of the later dips I was able to get down & up while riding, as the Maricopa Trail was straight, so I could maintain momentum — of which my fat but generates a fair amount. 😏

Only one set of powerlines was humming, and not nearly as loud as the ones next to New River Rd. For some reason, my biceps were getting really sore from the rocky bouncing.

Somewhere along the way, Nearby, I spooked a trio of wild burros.

I didn’t see any of the ultralights or gliders based out of Pleasant Valley Airport.

After making the turn at the CAP Canal, there’s a vehicle gate dead ahead. I say “dead”, because if a biker isn’t paying attention, it will take his head off. 😵

I took a 20 minute break at the shady cabana on Lake Pleasant Pkwy., which is just over halfway.

I hit my high speed of the day, 26 mph, on the Jomax Rd. descent. 🚴🏻‍♂️💨

Crossing 115th Ave. -- which was quite busy -- at a "walk" light, a SUV ran the red right in front of me. Luckily, I am paranoid!

Despite not leaving home until 9 a.m. my loving shuttle driver & I were back home by 1: 30 p.m. 👍

This is my first full GoPro video, so if you could give it a watch & let me know what you think, I would appreciate it. 🙂

The purpose of this hike was specifically to complete this section of the MT. It was all pretty much sidewalks and bicycle paths, except for the mile I had to hike through a construction zone.

I parked at the Calderwood Butte trailhead since it was the only designated parking for any kind of hiking. I walked a quarter mile south on 99th Ave to get to Jomax, where the MT is, then headed west. Jomax ends and the bicycle path picks up and heads south. This was nice to walk along a path, but on the left side was a new subdivision. To the west where some views of the Agua Fria riverbed and mountains in the distance, but not much.

at Happy Valley Road, I immediately was on the bridge over the Agua Fria River, heading west again. After the bridge was the construction, which was mainly grading and traffic control improvements. Hiked to where I left off from the Trilby TH 2 weeks earlier.

Turned around and headed back, getting over to the Lake Pleasant Parkway and headed north to where I left off from last week. I had it marked on the GPS, but I also put a big "X" in the dirt next to the bicycle path. It was still there a week later. The views to the north get nicer here the farther north you go, but the traffic noise tends to detract from that. :|

I had a shortcut planned out to get back to the Calderwood Butte TH from Lake Pleasant Parkway, and save about a mile of extra hiking. Then when I got there, I noticed that the subdivision there is a gated community. I had to resort to some subterfuge to sneak in, and then again to get out, of the gated community. Added a little adventure to my morning. : rambo :

I arrived at the Aqua Fria Trailhead to find that it's closed. It was a pretty long drive up, and at 6:30a, the traffic was beginning to build on the freeways. Fortunately, across the road is a dirt service road with room to pull off on the side. The road into the Agua Fria Trailhead is also closed, with no trespassing signs posted. I quickly hiked down that road to the beginning of the MT and headed south. When I got to the trailhead, there were two pickup trucks pulled off on the road there, so I'm not sure how strictly the closing is being enforced.

The MT heads under the Carefree Highway, then there is a single track that heads up the hill towards the Waddell Canal. Then, it follows a very faint service road that parallels the canal for the next few miles. The service road is faint enough that it's pretty much like hiking a single track. Saw absolutely no one along here at all. For this stretch, on your left is a cylone fence. The service road goes up and down through some drainages, and also passes under a few sets of powerlines. After the powerlines, the views are actually pretty nice here, other than the cyclone fencing. Saw a few of the lawnmower engine gliders flying about and a few planes landing and taking off from Pleasant Valley Airport.

The service road makes a left turn around where the Waddell Canal meets the CAP canal. The CAP appears to come up from underground somewhere , so while the 2 canals meet, it just kind of looks like the one canal makes a left turn. After following another dirt road for about a quarter mile, the trail turns into a single track again, paralleling the Lake Pleasant parkway. After crossing the 303, it turns into a wider landscaped path that looks to be meant for hikers and bikers.

On the way back, saw a group of wild burros.

Getting back to where I parked, I decided to take a shortcut and climb the slope up the Carefree Highway instead of going the long way through the closed area. Kind of tricky getting up the loose, steep slope, but not too bad. Found my car in good shape when I got back, and headed home.
