Opted for North & South Chilco today. Not a far drive from my house, but I didn’t get started until 1030. Temps were still in the low 60s. Headed up to N Chilco first. The trail is steep, but in good condition. Good views from the summit, but some smoky haze in the air.

Dropped off the south side of the summit and took a use trail to reconnect with the main trail above the saddle. Once south of North Chilco, there’s more vegetation encroaching on the trail, but it’s still in pretty good shape. The summit of South Chilco isn’t very exciting, but a fire a few years ago did open up the views a little bit. From there, I retraced my steps back north, staying on the main trail the entire way.

Saw four other hikers. Passed several backpacking sites, but they would all be dry camping. Looks like it will be a good summer for huckleberries. The road is in good condition, when dry, any vehicle would be fine.

Plenty of flowers along the entire trail. More bear grass than I’ve ever seen.

Arrived at the trailhead around 0845. There were 3 or 4 other cars there, but all parking is along the side of the road anywhere in the vicinity, so it was easy to park. Cool and breezy, with some clouds. The trail immediately started heading uphill, so we warmed up quickly. Tons of trees, flowers, and green. The trail was in good condition and easy to follow. At the fork, we headed left off the main trail to go to North Chilco first. The final section to North Chilco was my favorite part of the day. The trail headed up to the summit though a talus field, and all the trees disappeared, allowing for great views. It was windy at the summit, so we wandered around a little, but didn’t stay very long. A small trail drops off the south side of the summit, steeply though the talus, then heads back over to the main trail, where it dropped down to Chilco Saddle. After the saddle, the trail climbs back up again to South Chilco. From the trailhead to North, we encountered only about 5 downed trees on the trail, but on the way up to South, we encountered another 15-20. About halfway up, I could hear chainsaws below us, and commented to the kids that there might be a crew behind us. The summit of South Chilco is nothing exciting, but there was still some snow, and we ate lunch in a small clearing. No views due to all the trees.

On the way back down, we encountered a crew on horseback who were indeed clearing the trail. Not having to deal with any deadfall on the way back was quite nice. We took another break at the saddle, then followed the main trail all tge way back, skipping the North Chilco detour we took earlier. The last climb up from the saddle was tiring for the kids, but once we were past that, it was smooth sailing back to the trailhead.
