A few Arizonans made their way up to Idaho. We didn’t get started until around 1530, but that was about perfect since most of the rain had passed. Cool, cloudy, and breezy. Steady uphill to the campsite, where we enjoyed the views to the west, then a nice hike through the talus up to the summit.

Windy up top, but good views in all directions. We opted to drop off the south side of the summit to make a short loop around the top. This adds half a mile and a couple hundred feet of aeg, but I like this little addition. Then it’s an easy descent back to the trailhead. Saw a few other hikers. Fun to hike up here with Kelly and Bruce.

linda invited bruce and i up to idaho to sample some of the hiking
by the time we landed in spokane, drove to her house and got ready to hike, most of the rain had moved off to the east
we drove up into the forest and set out on an old roadbed, transitioning to single track
the hike gains 1600 feet in a little over two miles, so decently steep but with good footing
switchbacks through forest, then we stopped at an overlook to check out the views to the west
soon after, the trail splits and we took the left fork to north chilco
some talus to cross before topping out
great views of the surrounding area from the open summit
we opted to drop off to the south to make a small loop on the return
more talus, my favorite
quick hike downhill after that
glad we were able to get in a hike on a travel day
great intro

After an uneventful flight from the heat of the valley, and arriving on the tail end of a rainstorm in Spokane, we made our way out to nearby Kootenai County in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest and the Chilco Mountain Trailhead.

The trail begins with a steady, moderately steep climb through old-growth forest on a wide, well-used path. We paused at a sweet campsite in an opening with views to the west.

Climbing out of the forest, we made a short, talus-covered ascent to the peak. It was windy and on the cool side, but the 360-degree views were outstanding. It was also my first view of Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced POND-uh-RAY).

For some variety, we decided to drop down the backside of the mountain to meet up with the trail to South Chilco Peak before heading back to the trailhead.

All in all, it was a great warm-up starter hike for the rest of the week in northern Idaho.

Short hike up to North Chilco with Jill. Nice breeze at the summit, but the air was hazy with smoke. Only saw one other hiker all morning. Good workout hike.

Perfect weather today. Didn’t get started until almost 1000, but I figured it wouldn’t be too busy. 60 degrees at the start, but very humid. Lots ot huckleberries, which I snacked on as I hiked. Had the trail to myself all the way up to the summit, where a family of four was just leaving.

As always, great views from the summit of N Chilco. I could see the Sunset Fire burning a few miles to the north, on the eastern slopes of Blacktail/Butler Mtn, towards Talache. Smoke was light, but still there. Yesterday’s weather probably helped though. Almost chilly up top, with the breeze and a sweaty shirt.

Dropped off the south side of the summit on the use trail. Once below the talus, there were tons of huckleberries. Once back on the main trail, I headed back north and all the way down. Saw one more couple and their not so friendly dog. 62 degrees at the finish.

Opted for North & South Chilco today. Not a far drive from my house, but I didn’t get started until 1030. Temps were still in the low 60s. Headed up to N Chilco first. The trail is steep, but in good condition. Good views from the summit, but some smoky haze in the air.

Dropped off the south side of the summit and took a use trail to reconnect with the main trail above the saddle. Once south of North Chilco, there’s more vegetation encroaching on the trail, but it’s still in pretty good shape. The summit of South Chilco isn’t very exciting, but a fire a few years ago did open up the views a little bit. From there, I retraced my steps back north, staying on the main trail the entire way.

Saw four other hikers. Passed several backpacking sites, but they would all be dry camping. Looks like it will be a good summer for huckleberries. The road is in good condition, when dry, any vehicle would be fine.

Plenty of flowers along the entire trail. More bear grass than I’ve ever seen.

Easy workout hike with the dog. Got started around 0900. This trail had been closed for two summers due to a nearby fire, just reopened a few weeks ago. Zero evidence of fire (I think it stayed farther south on the ridge), but the trail is in excellent shape. No deadfall, good footing.

Looked around the campsite at about 1.50 miles, then took the side trail up to the summit. Great views. Very breezy today, so we didn’t stay long. Easy hike back downhill to the truck. Temp was 45 at both the start and finish, probably a few degrees cooler at the summit. Saw zero people. Some deer and turkeys on the drive, but no animals on the hike.

Finally have both kids up here now, and we opted for a familiar hike today. Several cars at the trailhead when we started just before 1100. The uphill is slightly steep, but steady, and on a good trail. Muddy in places, but not bad. Some snow near the top but minimal on the trail. Nice views from the top while we took a short break. Quick hike back down.

Another repeat from last year since North Chilco was one we really liked. The trail is steep, but in excellent condition. Some flowers along the way, and a lot of huckleberries. The last third of a mile is a hike through talus up to the summit. Great views from up top, although it was a little hazy from smoke from the Andrus Fire near Spokane. Easy hike back down. Despite this being a popular trail, we only saw one other group.

Arrived at the trailhead around 0845. There were 3 or 4 other cars there, but all parking is along the side of the road anywhere in the vicinity, so it was easy to park. Cool and breezy, with some clouds. The trail immediately started heading uphill, so we warmed up quickly. Tons of trees, flowers, and green. The trail was in good condition and easy to follow. At the fork, we headed left off the main trail to go to North Chilco first. The final section to North Chilco was my favorite part of the day. The trail headed up to the summit though a talus field, and all the trees disappeared, allowing for great views. It was windy at the summit, so we wandered around a little, but didn’t stay very long. A small trail drops off the south side of the summit, steeply though the talus, then heads back over to the main trail, where it dropped down to Chilco Saddle. After the saddle, the trail climbs back up again to South Chilco. From the trailhead to North, we encountered only about 5 downed trees on the trail, but on the way up to South, we encountered another 15-20. About halfway up, I could hear chainsaws below us, and commented to the kids that there might be a crew behind us. The summit of South Chilco is nothing exciting, but there was still some snow, and we ate lunch in a small clearing. No views due to all the trees.

On the way back down, we encountered a crew on horseback who were indeed clearing the trail. Not having to deal with any deadfall on the way back was quite nice. We took another break at the saddle, then followed the main trail all tge way back, skipping the North Chilco detour we took earlier. The last climb up from the saddle was tiring for the kids, but once we were past that, it was smooth sailing back to the trailhead.
