| no partners | | On to my next hike to try and get to the Rim from the Pine Creek Canyon area using the old Boy Scout routes. I'm using and old route map and this week trying to get up what they are calling Johnson Canyon. The map says this is part of the old Canyon Loop that utilizes the East Rim Trail, just to the south.
The Route has a small cairn right off the Pine Canyon Trail to signify the start. I find out later that the beginning of this route is the old alignment for the Pine Canyon Trail, before they added switchbacks in the area.
I did pick up the tell tale red markers, some now silver with age, showing the beginning of the route. When you lose the trail, follow the game trails. Once in the canyon, the maples get nice and thick. It's relatively open and an easy boulder hop.
At one point I lost sight of any tags and followed a steep game trail until it petered out and I got cliffed out. I dropped back into the canyon to look for any tags and ultimately decided to bail on this attempt because of the deadfall and thickness of the brush.
If I try again, I'll try from the top going down instead.
There's one more to go after this one is completed. |
