Brother's Keeper summit off the trail near the saddle. Sunny turned into overcast. Maybe Sunday will be nice?

76 degrees and sunny, so I had to take advantage of the afternoon. Doesn't look like there was much rain here Saturday, so who knows about the backside for a full peak hike.

With apologies to Dr. Seuss, this hike went to a couple of peaks in the northern fringes of Tucson that I had not been to before:
1) Panther Peak (the cat)
2) Sombrero Peak, aka Safford Peak (the hat)

We did the loop CW by first going the standard route up to the hat. This hike was short and steep, with some loose, slippery rock in places. There was a bit of scrambling near the top, but nothing more than class 2 imho. The trail was fairly easy to follow, but for some reason a moron has taken blue spray paint to mark the trail toward the top, which was totally unnecessary.

After checking out the nice views atop the hat, we went along the ridgeline over to the cat. To me, this was the best part of the hike. This was a fun traverse, with a few short and easy class 3 moves. There was little to no exposure, although those with a fear of heights might have some issues. I enjoyed going through the hole-in-the-rock along the way.

We made our way to a saddle below the cat, and then took an easy-to-follow trail up to the summit. The grad was not as steep as the climb up to the hat, so it was not a bad climb.

We made our way back down to the saddle below the cat, and then went north to descend down to the desert floor below. There was a half-decent use trail for part of the way, but the trail disappeared, so it was more of a bushwhack for the rest of the descent. After getting down to the desert floor, we continued bushwhacking, but eventually made our way to a trail which we followed for a ways. Then we had to again bushwhack our way up to a saddle, where we hit another trail that took us back to the TH. This portion of the hike from the cat back to the TH was not particularly enjoyable. The descent from the saddle was fairly steep in places, and there was lots of loose rock to deal with, which slowed us down quite a bit.

Synopsis
Parts of the hike were fun, but the trek from Panther Peak back to the TH was a bit of a slog. I might do this hike again sometime, but probably not real soon.

Hiked up to Brother's Crest, or as I call it Brother's Keeper, the small point above the saddle. It has decent views and a social trail that is steep but not as bad as Sombrero's back side. The trail leads to a break in the rock cliffs that allows for easy access to the low summit.

Cold! What happened to fall? 2 weeks ago, it was over 90, and today it didn't get to 60. I had a frost at my place which was surprising given how early it is and how last year we were in the 90s well into November. Seems we went right to January from October.

A remarkably cool evening hike because I started in a driving rain as a thunderstorm had moved over Wasson Peak and was grazing the northern edge of the range. It ended up moving out and it dried up, but other storms to the south move north and produced an incredibly beautiful display for the remainder of hike.

More like July than June, and it was very nice. Also, not hot at all. Only high 80s by 630. Huge thunderstorm clouds over the Rincons, or to the east of the Rincons, were orange as it neared sunset. Mt Lemmon had almost an inch of rain, but the Solstice is still a few days away!

Too windy and not enough day light to hike to the summit, so I did this instead. At least the low is moving away and the air quality improving. Usual stuff to the North and west was visible.

Not bad out, though the humidity is up a bit, but cooler. However, I went to the first saddle and came back as the sunsets at 6:20 today.

There was a rattler on the side of the trail while I was climbing back up to the junction.

The smoke has cleared and the air has dried out, so it was pretty nice for an evening hike.

The days are getting shorter, but it is still hot. That makes it hard to hike in the evening. I went out anyway and probably breathed in a lot of smoke, which wasn't great, but I did catch an incredibly deep red sunset near the "top", and it was way more comfortable than the last few times on this, or the summit, since it is drying out.
