This was peak #2 of 2 for the day. After summitting Carr peak with Brian and Jim, we came back down to the trail junction and continued toward Granite peak. The trails were very well maintained all the way out to the base of Granite peak. We could see a good view of Miller peak to the South. After less than a mile, we saw a trail branch heading toward Miller peak. After going roughly 1 mile West, we arrived at a saddle at about 8,700 feet, then the trail descended and went further to the West. Eventually we reached Bear saddle which was about 2.3 miles from the trail junction going to Carr peak. There were some old wooden signs at this saddle. From here there were 2 obvious ways to summit Granite peak. We thought it was best to summit from the West side where the trail was higher and the brush wasn't as thick. From the high point of the trail on the West side of Granite peak to the top of Granite peak was only about 0.25 miles. On the top of the peak, there was a rock pile with a registry which we all signed. We also found some solar panels and a metal box near the peak. On the way down, I decided to save a little time and bushwhack down the East side of the peak to Bear saddle. The East side bushwhack was a little more challenging than the West side bushwhack, but it was not at all a problem. After reaching Bear Saddle again, Brian and Jim took the easier bushwhack route and arrived 10 minutes later. From there, we continued heading back to the Carr peak trail junction, and then back down to the Carr peak trailhead. We saw a few deer and a robin on the bottom 2 miles of the Carr peak trail.

AEG for both Carr and Granite combined = 3,113 feet

Mike, Brian and myself had planned on a trip to the Hauchucas for several peaks in June before California, but the active Monsoon canceled that and continued to do so well into August and September. With Brian back from Montana, we were finally able to come down here with great weather and conditions for an enjoyable day up 2 of the 4 planned peaks. From Ramsey Vista we hiked Carr and Granite Peak, which is off the Crest Trail just above Bear Saddle.

Pretty mild for most of the day, so that was really nice. Visibility was also about as good as it gets. Mike saw what was likely another speckled rattle snake at the junction to Carr Peak. The snow didn't hinder travel, and while Carr was crowded at times, I still would return to hike Miller from Ramsey Vista, or Pat Scott and Ramsey.

Most people probably won't bother with Granite. I was surprised that Dixie Flyer didn't appear to have bagged it. It wasn't bad at all, but it doesn't impress you. Some of the summits over the Crest Trail or near Carr seemed more impressive. Me, I just like a good view.

The road to the TH is rough, I wouldn't want to take a Honda Civic on it, but an Outback or better would be okay. It is rocky after the summer. A truck won't mind it.
