our plan for a utah hiking trip came together and we left from north phoenix at 0600
hit the subway in page for a nasty overpriced lunch - never again
bruce had picked out a couple hikes off 89 and i had a couple of hikes on my wish list along cottonwood canyon road to break up the drive
first up was a short hike to the nautilus, an appropriately shaped rock formation
backtracked on 89 to the toadstools
i've driven by, but had never taken the time to explore
interesting rock formations and a worthy stop
third hike was up yellow rock - nice to have a good track from @chumley for the ascent
there is indeed a steep path to the base of the rock face
we hit the high point and then wandered around for awhile up high
unique geological feature and a fun hike
looked like rain would hold off so we parked along the road and hiked through cottonwood canyon narrows
better than expected slot canyon
we also explored a little side canyon that ended in a box
returned on the road
did the quick stop at grosvenor arch before ending up at kodachrome basin state park where we had reserved one of the bunkhouses
good amount of exploration for a travel day, almost all of it new to me

Day 1 of 5 in Utah

The Nautilus
1.36m / 92' AEG
Nice easy hike to start the trip. To and through the Nautilus and then a bit of exploring on the way back. A good leg stretcher after a long drive.

Paria River Rimrock Toadstools
2.21m / 241' AEG
And out and back trails takes you to a little valley and flat area. This was much better than I expected. The toad stools were quite interesting, as were the surrounding formations.

The first half mile of this is in a Canyon the mostly dry Cottonwood Creek. You make a start sharp turn and start climbing up a steep and sometimes loose canyon. We were lucky enough to have the sun peek out to light up Yellow Peak for a bit. Good views from up top and many different ways to return to the TH.

Cottonwood Canyon Narrows
2.99m / 250' AEG
We made a clockwise loop starting from the South Cottonwood Narrows Canyon trailhead. It's a nice easy hike going through the canyon. We hit up a side canyon which was a worthy stop.

Grosvenor Arch
.51m / 100'AEG
A worthy very small hike if you are in the area

We were lucky with the weather the first day. Cottonwood Canyon road can be slippery after a rain. It'd rained the day before, but was dry enough for our travels. We only got sprinkled on once while hiking.

Day 1 of our Utah hiking trip. Kelly and Bruce did 99.98% of the planning for which I was grateful. We hiked the Cottonwood Canyon area, tallying five different short hikes. Great first day! :)

Last activity of the Escalante trip. This looked like a cool spot to check out on the way home. Parked at the Lower Hackberry TH, then set out downstream to where the crossing looked easiest. Barely got the toes wet. Then up the little side drainage, where we found the obvious, but ridiculously steep, trail. After a false summit it mellowed a bit, and then once on the main ridge the hard work was over.

The first good view of the 200-foot-or-so petrified sand dune (that's what it looks like, anyways) was impressive. Made our way to the foot, then took a path angling up towards Hackberry, then angling back towards the summit. The view from the summit is one of the best I've seen in Southern Utah.

Made our way down the south side, avoiding a really steep drop. Lots of colors in this area. Eventually we followed the slab all the way to the south, and decided to check out an interesting formation we saw from the top.

Figured we had seen the best of it, and made our way back. Took a less than optimal route, would've been better to go back the way we came for a ways. One the way down the chute, we saw a group of three heading up, the only others we saw out there. I can see this place becoming a mess, but at least the steep climb might filter out a few visitors.

Would be fun to do a traverse from Yellow Rock to Red Top and Paria Box.

This is a cool geologic formation with access from the parking area for lower Hackberry Canyon. It's not a marked trail and there's no mention of it on the signage there, but I had read something about it and it looked like it might be a worthwhile destination.

I had done poor research and had what was probably somebody's hand-drawn route from some sketchy source. This turned out to be terrible as we made our way up a stupid steep and loose scree chute that dead-ended at the top and left us forced to make some bad or worse decisions to get down. I'm too old for this feces! So after climbing 300 feet and spending almost an hour looking for the way, trying to dodge the boulders we were bowling at each other, we gave up and headed back down.

After that we found the nicely worn and well-traveled route up another steep drainage that started about a quarter mile down Cottonwood Creek from the parking lot. Note to self: go this way.

Upon gaining the ridge the route was straightforward and defined until it emerged onto the open slabs of rock. From here there's no right or wrong and we all took different routes toward the high point, enjoying the insane colors and textures that surrounded us.

This was a surprise to all of us. It is amongst the coolest things I have ever seen, and pictures (sorry not sorry I posted so many) simply do not come close to capturing it.

I would love to come back here to see it on a day with some clouds, perhaps with some sunrise or sunset lighting. It truly is a remarkable place to enjoy an hour or two.
