I decided to head up to Mount Ord today and it turned out to be a good day to hike up there.

It was cloudy for the entire hike, and it was nice not to have to hike in the sun for a change.

I didn't see anyone out there all day -- no other hiker, no bicycle riders, no service workers at the tower, and nobody driving on the road.

I did see a bear on the way up, which is the first one that I have seen on Ord. It was walking across FR 626 as I was hiking up. It was a small bear and it did not tarry.

On the way down I saw a couple of deer crossing FR 626, about a mile below where I saw the bear.

I've been getting tired of hiking in the heat so I decided to head up to some higher elevations and hike to Mount Ord. It was cool at the start and was pleasant on the ascent. It warmed up a bit over the last 3 miles or so but there was a decent breeze blowing which was welcome.

Normally I don't see any other hikers/bikers, but today there were 4 bicycle riders; one runner; and one other hiker.

On the way up I saw a couple of deer about 1.5 miles from the summit. On the way down I saw the same 2 deer at almost exactly the same spot.

About a half mile or so from the TH there was a pile of clothes or bedding alongside the road, next to where a cattle guard is. I am not sure what was up with that.

There are still some flowers on century plants within a mile or 2 from the TH, but that was about it for flowers on the hike.

I decided to head up to Ord today in order to find some cooler temperatures.

I started bright and early and was in the shade for the first couple of miles or so. It was cool and breezy at the summit, and I put on a windbreaker while sitting in the shade under the fire lookout for a snack break.

On the drive to the TH there was a car parked in the middle of the road shortly before getting to the TH. Fortunately the road was wide enough to have space to pull around it. The car was gone when I drove back out.

On the hike back a service vehicle for the towers at the summit came driving up the road. That was the only person that I saw all day.

The cooler temperatures were nice for this typical mid-week hike up to Mount Ord.

Today seemed like a good day to hike up to Mount Ord, so I got up early and headed up the Beeline Highway.

After the recent homicide up there I was more observant than normal.

On the way to the TH a van was parked beside the road. He was still there on my way back out -- it appears that he is living the van life.

As I was hiking up the road I got passed by a Tesla, and the Tesla was parked at the junction of FR 1688. So much for the news article that said that the road up to Mount Ord was treacherous and could only be driven by a skilled driver in a high clearance 4X4 vehicle. I was almost up to the Mount Ord summit and met a couple of girls on the way down -- they were in the Tesla.

I got passed by a mountain biker on the way up and when I got to the locked gate he was coming back down. He was going uphill on the bike way faster than I would have been going.

It was a really nice morning for the hike -- there was lots of cloud cover on the ascent and temps were kinda chilly.

Speaking of the homicide, I got a text from a friend who was hiking up to Ord on the day of the homicide, and he encountered the 2 people who later died. I won't post the details here, but he did contact the authorities.

I decided to get the Memorial Day Weekend off to a good start by hiking up to Mount Ord.

I started early and it was a pleasant morning, although the sun got a bit warm the last mile or so.

There were no car fires along the Beeline Highway this morning. Hopefully, that will be the case throughout the holiday weekend, but I wouldn't bet much money on that happening.

There were a few flowers -- bear grass, new mexico locust, and sandwash groundsel stood out.

With the temperatures warming up in the Valley I figured that this was a good day to hike up to Ord.

It was cold and windy when I started early in the morning, but it warmed up nicely on the return.

FR 626 was dry, but there was snow on the north facing slopes below the summit of Ord.

With the unseasonably warm temps in the Valley I decided to head up the Beeline Highway and hike up to Mount Ord this morning. It turned out to be a good choice -- it was comfortable up on Ord wearing shorts and a t-shirt, which doesn't normally happen this time of year.

I figured that today was as good as any to make my first hike up to Ord in 2025.

It is unusual to hike up to Ord this time of year and see no snow whatsoever.

It was a cold and windy day, and for a change the sun felt good. It was 32 at the start of the hike and 47 when we got back. With the brisk, gusty wind it felt pretty cold at the summit. It warmed up nicely by the time we got back to the FR 626-FR 27 junction.

I decided to give myself an early Christmas present and hike up to Mount Ord this morning. This was my 20th ascent of Ord in 2024.

It was cool and windy early in the morning, so I had on a jacket, stocking cap, and gloves. However, I was down to shirt sleeves by the time that I finished the hike.

For whatever reason there were more vehicles driving up and down FR 626 than I normally see.

I decided to vary my typical Mount Ord hike today by going to 2 peaks:
1) Mount Ord
2) Little Mount Ord

I started and ended at the 626 TH. I took the normal route up to Mount Ord, but on the way back once I got to the locked gate I descended off-trail down to FR 1688. Then I took 1688 to a saddle SE of Little Mount Ord, and from there went off-trail to the summit of Little Mount Ord. Then I went back to the saddle, took FR 1688 to FR 626, and then went on FR 626 back to the TH. This was basically a CW loop with side trips to the two Ords.

It was a bit brushy on the lower part of the descent from the locked gate down to FR 1688, and there was some low brush on the way up to Little Mount Ord.

It was a windy day which made the temperatures feel cooler than they actually were. In fact, it was downright cold for most of the hike.

Synopsis
Two Ords are better than one.

I got up this morning and figured that I'd get November started off on the right foot with a hike up to Mount Ord.

It was overcast and windy at the summit, and it almost felt like winter.

The sun came out on the descent and it was a pleasant hike back.

There were a handful of bigtooth maples with some nice color, but there aren't enough of them to merit a leaf peeping trip.

There is almost nothing in the way of fall foliage yet. Normally there would be some by now, so this may not be a good foliage year on Mount Ord. Fall foliage on Mount Ord is light anyway, but there is usually at least some.

My friend Brian made a side trip to Phoenix from Denver for a few days to see a concert for a band we both like. We had time to kill in the day, so I picked taking a ride up to Mt. Ord on FR626 and do the short hike from the locked gate near the top. Brian hiked the Grand Canyon with me 22 years ago, but a hike that is beyond his skill set these days.

Saw a few other hikers on the drive up and a few along the road up and on the way back. On the ride down @cannondalekid waved me down and we talked for a bit. Weather was cool up there, but not as cold as it was last April. It also wasn't as windy as it was the last 2 times I was there. Views were nice, best choice for a quick short day hike out of the heat for a visitor.

This was another Mount Ord hike.

The weather turned out nice today -- there was no sun out until we were well on the way back down.

The road was damp so apparently there had been some recent rain. FR 626 is getting eroded in a few places, so it looks like there has been some heavy monsoon activity up on Mount Ord.

I got to the TH just after 5:00 AM, and it was a nice morning for the hike. It was almost, but not quite, cool enough for a windbreaker at the TH.

On the drive back I could see quite a bit of burned acreage around the Ballantine TH. As I was heading south on the way back I could see a large plume of black smoke. It was coming from an RV that was on fire, about a mile south of the Ballantine TH in the northbound lane. It seems something catches fire on the Beeline Hwy just about every day.

I have been doing a lot of short, steep hikes lately so I was looking to do something longer but not as steep. I figured that a hike up to Mount Ord would do the trick, especially since I had not hiked up to Ord yet this month.

I put microspikes on at the locked gate, and did not take them off until about 1 mile below the gate on the way back.

It was a nice morning for the hike -- it was sunny early and later there were some nice looking clouds that made for some nice views.

The next time that I hike up there I will start from the Slate Creek TH in order to check out the wildflowers on FR 27.
