Only had limited time today, so I took Harlow on the same hike as yesterday. Except today was a whole different hike. Yesterday, the trail was in great shape with a few spots of mud, no obstructions to deal with. Today, the trail had less mud, and at least 38 downed trees to climb over, under, or around. Huge difference a day makes.

It’s a popular area, so I’m sure they’ll get it cleared quickly. It was quite the windstorm last night.

The forecast called for rain and high winds after 1100, lasting thruout the day and overnight, so I took Harlow out for a local walk to get her tired before she’d be cooped up for the day. We got started around 0800. Temps around 35, cloudy. I opted for the Red trail first, since they are doing thinning along that trail, but the workers hadn’t arrived yet.

Made the loop clockwise. Lots of blowdown from the big windstorm the week before Christmas. That alone probably accomplished half the thinning project. Passed thru some recently thinned areas too. Mostly frozen trail, but a few spots of mud. I could hear the machinery starting just before we finished that trail, good timing.

We crossed over to the Yellow trail and also went clockwise. Some muddy stretches. Some new gravel “bridges” thru some low spots. Lots of blowdown on this side as well. All must have been cleared right after it happened, so no obstacles on the trail. It started snowing around 0915. Lightly at first, but heavier as we finished. The dog was unconcerned, and always seem to like snow. The pond was finally full. Harlow once saw a turtle in the pond, so now she has to look for it every single time. Heard some owls. Plenty of squirrels. One woodpecker. Two other hikers with their dogs. Good to get a few miles in before the worst of the weather later today.

Final day in Idaho for Kelly and Bruce, so we did a quick walk around English Point with the dog. Made loops of Red, Yellow, Green, and Blue trails. Temps in the 40s. Saw a few other hikers and dogs. Nice morning.

This was the last hike of the trip that we thought we'd have time for. It's an easy walk through a pleasant wooded area close to Hayden.

Surprise, surprise it finally happened.

After the hike we left for the airport, then returned when we got the announcement the the flight had been delayed until later in the day because of storms in Phoenix. Long story short we spent the night at the airport for a flight leaving 7am the next day, that did not take off until 4:30pm with 17 people on board.

Easy stroll around English Point. Warmish, but a breeze helped.

Pretty much the same easy hike as yesterday, but added portions of Green & Blue Trails to get slightly more respectable numbers. It rained all morning, but the trails were dry by the afternoon. Saw some turkeys on the drive, squirrels and deer while hiking.

Needed something easy after two solid days of driving. English Point is the closest. Did a loop of both the Red & Yellow trails. Most of the summer flowers have faded away, and a lot of the vegetation is done for the summer. Nice to be able to go outside at 4:30pm in August and not die. 75 degrees at the start and finish. Mostly cloudy. Could smell a hint of wildfire smoke.

Gorgeous day today. Too bad I spent most of the day prepping and painting the shop. After rolling the first coat of paint, I took Harlow out for a hike/walk at English Point. Again, did the Yellow loop first, then the Red. Some people on the trails, but not crowded. Muddy in places from yesterday’s rain. Temps around 60 the entire way. Perfect way to tire out the dog.

Made loops of both English Point trails with the dog. Did the Yellow Trail first, clockwise. Saw a lot of squirrels, some deer, not much water in the pond. Heard a lot of sirens. When crossing from the Yellow to Red trail, saw all the emergency vehicles.

Started down Red trail counterclockwise. Ran across several firefighters and police officers who were finishing up after someone had a heart attack on the trail, ambulance had already left. They tried to get Harlow to let them play with her, but she refused. When she was a puppy, I trained her to step to the edge of the sidewalk or trail when encountering people, and she took that training EXTREMELY seriously. One officer recognized me (there’s a station near my house that we walk past a lot) and we chatted for a few minutes.

Further along the trail, we ran into an autistic man and his caregiver. The man informed me that he was very scared of dogs, so I moved Harlow as far off the trail as I could. I promised him she would stand behind my legs and not move at all while he walked past. Once he believed me, he walked by, and Harlow stayed perfectly still. The caregiver wanted to pet her, but again, Harlow refused. The man declared “that dog is okay. That is a good dog. It didn’t bite me.”

Finished up the loop with no additional interactions. Even more police vehicles in the parking lot when we finished. I have a feeling that heart attack didn’t turn out well, but I’ll find out later. Temps in the low 60s the entire time, comfortable in shorts and a tshirt. Not really a hike, but more than a walk around the neighborhood.

After several days of seemingly endless painting, decided to take the dog out for an easy hike. English Point is only ten minutes from the house. I knew it would be busy, but didn’t really care.

We first did the Yellow loop clockwise. Easy walking. Saw some hikers, dogs, bikers, and one lady on horseback. A few woodpeckers. Nice walking thru the trees.

After finishing the Yellow loop, we did the Red loop. Despite being half the distance of Yellow, I liked the Red loop a little more. Prettier trees, less thinning. No bikes or horses allowed on this loop. Easy walking. The two loops combined come out right at five miles, which is plenty for a dog walk.
