Since the weather was great I was able to hike out to Mohican after Tammany. Dew point low 50s, temperature high 70s. Not missing 117 here! No one was here today compared to the 4th of July, which was also great.

Mostly insects now, very few birds. I did hear one pee-a-wee near the AT-Garvey junction.

Saw 2 other people, both on the AT heading south as I went north. No one on the summit. No bears.

Trail is overgrown with weeds down low and brush higher up. I wore deet for this hike, something I haven't done in probably 2 decades. Not sure when I will hike this again, but this probably nice when it is colder.

Summit view was good, and there was no haze. I am pretty sure I could see the Catskills.

I had wanted to hike this "summit" during dry conditions with good long range visibility for a while. I wasn't sure I would be able to do so this year, but late season cold fronts still produce these conditions well into April, it seems. Also, leaf out and pollen season is probably soon, so I didn't want to deal with that scourge, even though it is possible May has days like today.

Returning 8 days after my last hike here meant things felt much better. I miss that about regular real hiking (flat "hiking" isn't hiking at all, it's a walk, even if 15 miles) and the ability to feel that type of fitness may not be fully appreciated by people who live in mountainous areas. Imagine living some boring flat place like Florida or Illinois and trying to hike a mountain. No wonder people think it is torture.

Unlike over near Tammany the spring sign is much less. There, Hickory seems to be nearing leaf out and pollination time, but not so, here. No mosquitoes at the little creek crossing, either. It was freezing last night, so that is part of why. There was a breeze, nothing like what Flagstaff can endure as routine in April, but that kept wildlife sounds like birds to a minimum.

The hiking felt better this time compared to September. I figure this was because it was pretty cool and dry. The high was about 60, but the dew point (at Mount Pocono) was in the teens for most of the day, which is really nice considering where it will be in a few months. I felt like I was on Wrightson at 9400' when I was at the high point. It was very similar by feeling.

As a result of the great conditions, I was able to see the Catskill Mountains up in New York. Nothing extreme, these are not the Sierra Nevada as seen from Telescope Peak, but you could see them. It was a little like seeing the Mazatzals from Humphrey. There were two birders who came up a north AT approach and let me use their binoculars. I was able see the tower structure at the NJ high point.

On the way back I stopped at the Sunfish pond.

After a Tammany Loop hike I came here to take in a real summit. Not so much one for AZ, but for NJ, this is a real summit with nearly 360 degree views. I was very pleased.

I summited via the Garvey Springs Trail and the Appalachian Trail, and will write a description as soon as I can.

I skipped the longer option going past Sunfish Lake. Out and back on the same route, which was fine.

Compared to Tammany, there is no one here.

Locals told me this is probably the nicest true summit in the area, and they reported cutting brush near the top to keep the summit views open. Very nice.

Hopefully not as humid for my next visit. The state HP was visible, and on a good day the Catskills are reported to be visible. With all the humidity, they were not. Camelback was visible. Camelback, PA, that is. There is a ski resort there.

Mosquitoes were bad in parts of the ridge, especially near the lone water crossing.
