I was kind of wanting to start from Nettleton Gulch for this morning's hike, but I waxed my truck yesterday, and didn't want to get it muddy the very next day. So I started from the Copper Ridge neighborhood again. Heading uphill, I stuck more to what seems to be called Trail 1, which is steeper than the loop trail. Stayed on that into the Natl Forest. Headed east on a road/trail that may or may not be called Trail 2, it's kind of murky, then got onto 1562.

Took 1562 uphill to Trail 5, then shortcut up Trail 5, which is very steep, of course. Mud added to the fun. West on 2342 towards the summit. Snow starting around 4000' on the southern exposure. Walked over to the best views just west of the towers, then headed up to the true summit, which has no views. Put my rain jacket on at the summit, since despite no rain in the forecast until tonight, it was raining.I was originally going to come back down 2342, but Trail D off the north side didn't look too bad. More snow, down to about 3800', but melting quickly. Saw two deer and about a dozen elk, all camera shy. One area, a little over an acre in size, must have been hit with some crazy wind gusts in Dec, because most of the trees in that section were down. Some uprooted, some snapped. Only 5 trees on the trail to climb over.

Once at the saddle, I debated going up East Canfield, but decided to skip it today. 1562 east to Trail 6. West on 6, which is an easy descent. A couple of trees to climb over, but easy. Continued west on Trail A, which must have a reroute, since there are two paths marked as A in one area. Once past that, continued west and back down through the Cancourse and Natural Area.

Light rain from the summit most of the way back to the trailhead. Breezy, but not cold. Saw a handful of other hikers and their dogs, and two dirtbikers. Now that I finally have a somewhat decent idea of most of the Canfield trails, I will start adding guides as I fully complete the trails.

My usual workout on Canfield Mtn. Cool, cloudy, and breezy. Saw a few hikers and dirtbikers.

Needed something close to home, with decent cell svc, and Canfield Mtn provides a ton of workout options. Parked at Nettleton Gulch and headed up 1562 & 2342 to the west summit. Came down Trail D, then 6, A, and Cave/4. Most are old logging roads. Warm in the sun, cool in the shade, nice breeze at times. Saw the rear end of one moose, and annoyed one grouse. Several dirt bikers. Not crowded on weekdays, but weekends are busier.

Workout hike on Canfield. Took Trail 1562 & 2342 up to the summit of West Canfield. Both are forest roads, so easy walking. After the summit, came down Trail D (probably the prettiest part of the hike), a little more of 1562, Trail 6 (another old road), Trail 5 (a steep connector), Trail A (another old road, but rougher), and finished on Cave. Cool and breezy, high clouds all day, with heavier clouds moving in as I finished. Saw deer and turkeys, two hikers, and two bikers.

Morning workout hike. Temps in the 60s the entire time. Only saw a handful of people, mostly in the final mile. Saw one snake, but it was too fast for a pic. Nice loop with plenty of shade.

Morning hike with the dog. 49 degrees to start, cloudy and breezy. Made a loop to the summit using trails I was familiar with. Chilly up top, I’m guessing around 45, windy with some drizzle and fog. Easy hike back down.

Saw about two dozen turkeys, several squirrels, about a half dozen deer, one woodpecker, one moose, one trailrunner, one mountain biker and one dirtbiker. 49 degrees at the finish.

Workout hike on mostly familiar trails. Canfield Mtn has a ton of trails, mostly poorly marked, with almost limitless options to create any sort of hike. I started from Nettleton Gulch around 0615 to 52 degrees and cloudy/drizzly. It rained quite a bit last night, so the trails were muddy in a lot of places, so I was glad to wear waterproof Salomons, which have better grip on wet surfaces vs my preferred Sauconys. Another thing I realized within the first few minutes—I had brought three different daypacks to leave up here permanently—the pack I had chosen for today was last used for non-hiking activities, and I had topped off the water bladder on top of some vodka mixed drink. Made for an interested flavor of water today. Oh well.

Anyway, I headed up Trail 3, which is steep, and rutted out from dirtbikes. Not bad going up, but would be annoying to descend. Some mud and loose rock. Heard a loud noise at one point and saw an animal off to my left. At first, all I could see was an pumpkin and large ears, and for a split second thought a mule had escaped from one of the nearby properties. I quickly realized however, that I was looking at a moose. Got some pics as it walked ahead of me for a moment.

After crossing a forest road, trail 3 becomes trail 1, and gets even steeper. Very steep. Slow trudge up to West Canfield. The best views are actually at the rock outcropping on the west side of the mountain. From there, I made my way over to the unexciting true summit.

From the summit, I took trail D, which is a very nice section, over to the saddle between West and East Canfield. Some glimpses of Lake Hayden. Started raining a little heavier, so I added a rain jacket. Saw a turkey. From the saddle, I headed up a very steep trail to the summit of East Canfield, which is also not very exciting. Came down a slightly different, but less steep, route back to the saddle, which I think was also trail D.

At the saddle again, I got rid of the rain jacket, then headed down trail 6, which is an old logging road, very easy. Some views of Lake Coeur d’Alene. Took a shortcut on steep trail 5 to get down to trail A, which is another old logging road. Easy. Took trail 4 (Cave) which follows Nettleton Gulch back down to the parking on an easy trail. 53 degrees when I finished. Did not see anyone else, but there were a couple other vehicles at the trailhead.

Good workout hike. Convenient to my house as it’s only 8 miles/20 minutes away. Will probably explore some of the other trailhead options too.

Easy local hike with Harlow since the kids wanted to sleep in. Parked at the Nettleton Gulch TH and headed up Trail 3, which I’ve been on before. Steep as ever, muddy in places, but last night’s rain softened the ground enough to give better grip.

Wanting to see some new territory, when we got to FR 1562, I headed east, the fairly level road being a nice break from the steepness of the previous trail.

Turned left and headed up Trail 5, which was once again very steep. Saw two mountain bikers—the only people I saw on the trails today. There was supposed to be a nice viewpoint where Trail 5 meets FR 2342, but I think the trees have gotten tall enough to obscure the views. You can see Coeur d’Alene and the lake, but not clearly.

Rather than continue up Trail 5, I stayed on FR 2342 towards the summit of West Canfield Butte. Obscured views from the summit, but we rested there for a moment. From there, we headed down D Trail, which drops off the north side of the mountain before curving east and southeast. I like D Trail, which I had also been on before. Moderate grade, good condition, and glimpses of Hayden Lake and the Coeur d’Alene Mountains to the east.

I reached a junction of various trails and roads called The Island, and opted to head down Trail 6, once again new territory for me. Trail 6 appears to be an old logging road, which made for easy hiking, gradually downhill.

Reached Trail 5 again, and took that steeply straight down to A Trail below, which was another old logging road, but had more vegetation. A Trail east, mostly level, with a slight incline in places. No views, but pleasant hiking.

When A Trail reached the creek, I opted to take Trail 4/Cave Trail directly back to the trailhead. This was probably my favorite trail of the loop—excellent condition, moderate grade, tons of trees. No water in the creek, but I imagine early summer would have plenty. Never saw the mine, which gives this trail its name, but I think it may have been above me just before the trailhead.

Very nice hiking right next to town, and so many trails on the mountain gives almost endless hike variations for a nice workout without having to drive very far. Cool and cloudy day, but no rain while hiking.

Wanted something close to the house while the kids were sleeping. Parked at the west trailhead and headed up Trail 3. After the first switchback, it was STEEP. Straight uphil on a rocky, loose, muddy trail. I’m glad I opted to go uphill on this part of the loop, because downhill would have been annoying.

Nice views at the top of the trail. Walked past the towers and then got on Trail D up to the summit of West Canfield. Not much of a summit, no views, but pretty trail. It curved downhill off the north side and headed east. Some limited views of Lake Hayden.

Mildly confusing junction while trying to find the top of Trail 7. Once on 7, it was a very pleasant downhill hike on a nice trail. Again, the junction with Trail 8 was somewhat poorly signed, but Trail 8 to finish out the loop was also a very nice downhill hike.

Saw five other hikers, and three dirtbikers, so not too busy. I imagine summer weekends have a lot more dirtbikes to contend with. Lots of turkeys, and a few deer.
