Jason and I met up for a short hike and swim adventure in Superior on a warm spring day, and started our route at the Silver King substation. Followed the Stoneman Trail into upper Devils Canyon, and then boulder hopped down the canyon. We found a shady grove of oak trees with a pool beside it, and stopped for lunch and a soak, which felt great in the chilly water. Devils Canyon was still flowing, despite a lack of recent rain. We continued our largely obstacle free boulder hop down the canyon, and arrived at the old Devils Canyon bridge, where we had parked my truck. I shuttled Jason back to his car, and then set off on a short side hike to try and find the site of an 1880's photo of riders on the Stoneman Trail. With a bit of bushwhacking, I was able to locate an overgrown section of the trail, finding an ancient horseshoe and the 1880's photo site. Great adventure with a lifelong friend!

Checked out this road side attraction en route to Gilbert from Globe as an evening hike. Saw the bridge and then boulder hopped up Devils Canyon a ways. Explored a 4wd road on the hike back, where an owl flew silently overhead to perch on a pinnacle high above. I could see its silent silhouette in the dusky sky, so I said "hello" in its native owl language. To my surprise, Mr. Hoots responded to me several times. A fun moment there! A great hike that got me interested in doing a longer Devils Canyon hike soon.

Another lame hike to check out some history. I gimped along with the goal of getting back to Oak Flat for some cold beer. This section of road is almost completely grown over. The bridge now stops at a wall of rock that has been put in place to support the new wider highway cut though the area. The bridge will survive as construction can't affect the creek that flows under it. The root system of one of the sycamore trees just below the bridge is as impressive as any I've ever seen.

Short leg stretcher stop on my drive back home.
Little bit of snow left on the ground, the creek was flowing good & the bridge was worth the walk.
Glad I stopped :)

This was the second site on Pam's list. After passing the spot a few times, we realized it was right where one would expect.

The span is in great shape, but I wonder how much longer it will be there. Survey markers suggest that they will use the old alignment in the expansion, and I doubt this bridge meets current requirements for trucks.

2nd Bridge of the Day with Alex...
Couldn't quite figure out the Highway Pull-Off, but once we did, it made more Sense...From the Highway, it looks like you could barely pull off there, but once you do, there's enough Room for at least 4 Cars...It's 5.2 Miles from the Highway 177 Overpass in Superior and if you're heading towards Globe, it will be on the Left just as the Guardrail starts...

Quick Hike on the old Highway and it was a pretty neat Bridge...Dismayed at the Survey Markers though...I think they are getting ready to make Highway 60 a Four Lane and when they do, that Bridge will not survive...Part of the old Highway might, but I just don't see how they can spare the Bridge at all...If you want to see it, you might want to do it soon...

Interesting little "Rest Stop" along there too...Wouldn't want to Camp there now, as the current Highway is pretty much right above you, but it was still a cool spot along the Creek, which was dry at this Time...

Stopped by Oak Flat on the way back to Town...Alex has never been in there and with things possibly changing, I wanted him to see it...Dinked around a little, took a couple of Shots at Birds while we were there... :D

It was a Nice Day, a little History, a little Exercise, a little Wildlife and it was good to see Alex and catch up again... :)

After hitting up the old highway and bridges on Queen Trail, we jaunted up see this one before it got too dark. The water was rushing and the waterfall off-trail to the left was flowing pretty good.

I have the whole afternoon off... Hmm... What should I do? Hunt down snow melt! I suspected that Devils Canyon was running nicely. It was perfect! I've never hiked upstream beyond the bridge so I really didn't know what I'd find. My primary plan was to experiment with some soft water photography. Capturing soft water is something that I've always wanted to try. I can't remember the last time I packed a tripod on a hike. I must admit that I'm not a fan of heavily pushed "misty" soft water. My $400 P&S camera was not likely going to pull that off anyway's so no worries there. I personally prefer moderate soft water. Basically something just beyond natural is what I was hoping for. Considering that this was my first attempt, my expectations were not overly high. Beginners luck is what I was hoping for. I must have had a little in my pack.

:D

Great place for a picnic lunch. Lots of shade and temps were considerably cooler at this altitude.

Devils Canyon Bridge (Abandoned)
01/25/2010

I pulled in here this afternoon while on the way back from my main hike for the day. With all of the recent heavy rain and snowmelt, the typically dry Devils Canyon was running really strong. Opportunities like this don't come very often. I simply could not resist. I really love this little place!

Nice view. Good picture opportunity. "No jumping on the bridge", said the tourist.

Devils Canyon Bridge (Abandoned)
11/04/2008

Every time I drive back from Globe, I cant help but be curious about the old original highway route along Devils Canyon, above Superior. There is a very small pull off at the bottom of the hill with a barricade blocking the abandoned road. It is a short walk along the decaying original roadbed to the bridge. Along the side was an old picnic area. The original bridge was in service from 1900-1949. Neat little peace of history.

Took some visitors to BTA. Had lunch at Buckboard and then drove up and wandered around Oak Flats.
