Its been awhile since I hiked the bowl. It did not disappoint, as one would expect this time of year.

A beautiful forty four degree start. The trail was in great condition and the aspen were probably as close to prime as they are going to get. There are still some green aspens, however, by the time they turn yellow the other trees may be without leaves. I saw five hikers on the way down.

Absolutely beautiful day to be on the trail. Lots and lots of raspberries and fun mushrooms! 😊❤️ The trail was clear the whole way. I love this trail, such spectacular views. It wasn't crowded at all. We only saw a single pair of hikers during the entire hike.

There were lots of wildflowers and also gooseberries. It was a bit humid after yesterday's rain, but not too bad.

In addition to the wildflower photos tagged, there were harebells, four oclocks, thistle, and scarlet penstemon.

Quick morning trip up AZ#3 before the afternoon rains made these mountains even more enjoyable. There was a single downed tree that hadn't been cleared. It was about 4" in diameter and 6" off the ground.

There will be no return trips for me to the high point nor the gov't trail in the near future so this was an out n back.

We passed three ladies who I'd bet money knew azbackpackr and two guys from alpine out exercising their bear and lion hunting hound pack. I might have almost dognapped one of them. All were adorbs.

Even more raspberries on Escudilla than Baldy, enough to fill several buckets if you so desired. The stove is still hanging on in the floor joists of the tower shell. Perhaps it will never fall?

Quick hike to finish out the weekend. First time on Escudilla Trail and it was well worth the effort. Chumley and 9L had done it before but apparently it's much better now with the downed trees pretty much all cleared. Good fast trail to the summit with great views and the tower. Also a ton of berries to be had on the summit was a nice surprise!

After a pleasant summit break hiked back down the same way not too long before the summer thunderstorms showed up!

This trail hasn't had a recent triplog, so I decided to update all on the condition of the trail and my little adventure this morning. The drive to the TH is very well maintained and easy. Parking wasn't a problem today - I was the only one on the trail or at the TH. The trail itself is very good, no deadfalls to climb over at all. Made it all the way up to the lookout tower. Navigation is no problem - there's really only one way to go - up and back. The temperature today was glorious (60 degrees!!!, I felt sorry for anyone not in the cool weather. Started at about 7:30am and finished up at 10:20am. Didn't see any big game except for one deer on the way back down to the highway. No sign of bear - tracks nor scat. Elk tracks on the trail. However, it was the strangest thing - I can't remember being anywhere that I've seen so many butterflies and of such variety - very interesting. Lots of flowers too. I had the best time and seemed like I had the whole Escudilla Wilderness Area all to myself. If ever up in the White Mountains, this hike is well worth the drive. So, now I've bagged the three tallest peaks in AZ - not that I set out to do that, but it just happened.

Note: I did this hike in conjunction with the Escudilla Lookout and the Profanity Ridge HP.

After hiking Mt Baldy which ended up being a 17 mile hike, we were quite tired so we went back to our campsite which was only a few miles from the Mt Baldy trail. We stayed overnight, and planned on driving toward the Escudilla trailhead to look for a different campsite first before hiking Escudilla peak.

We found a campsite area that was on the South side of FSR 8056, about 0.5 miles from US-191. There was flowing stream within a 1 minute walk. There were shade trees. The only downside of this campsite is we could hear vehicles traveling on FSR 8056, but it wasn't traveled much. Maybe we saw/heard one vehicle every few hours on this holiday weekend.

We set up camp and drove to the trailhead, not arriving until 12:45 pm. We started off hiking up the Escudilla trail. There were a few steep sections in the beginning and it felt hot because we were only in partial shade. After hiking about 1.2 miles we met some other hikers coming down that said it was a good trail all the way to the lookout. There was a nice breeze and it was more comfortable at the higher elevations. After 1.6 miles we reached a high point and a shady area. We were nearby a high point called Profanity Ridge HP. We decided to try to reach that point on the way back assuming there was time. We continued hiking and the trail dropped a hundred feet before climbing the next section of trail. The trail continued up and then turned left heading toward an old fire lookout tower. We could see the fire tower from a distance. Once there, we could see that the fire tower was enclosed in a fence. We looked for a registry and did not find one, so we decided to leave one near a large rock outside of the fence.

Next, we decided to hike to Escudilla peak. We didn't know what to expect but we soon realized that there was no trail and that we would need to step over hundreds of fallen trees along the way. We knew that the peak was about 1 mile away from the Lookout, and the vertical gain was only about 50 feet higher. We felt like we stepped over 300+ downed trees along the way. There were a few areas where we were able to go around some of the fallen trees, but in some places, we had no choice but to step over them. It took us almost 1 hour to get from the Lookout to Escudilla peak.

At Escudilla peak, we found a registry and signed it. The last entry was about 1 month ago on June 1st. We took our photos and videos and decided to count the number of logs we needed to step over from the peak to the well-maintained trail near the lookout. We counted having to step over 283 logs on the way back. We actually tried to minimize the number of logs we needed to step over. If it was possible to walk around a log, we would do that. We also felt like going back it a better route and we didn't need to step over as many logs on the way from the lookout to the peak. So, we believe the round trip hike involved stepping over 600+ logs, some huge, some smaller. All in all, it was a fun hike and I have no regrets. But, if it was 8 miles of stepping over logs, it would not have been worth it.

On the way down, we stopped to hike to the Profanity Ridge HP, which was only about 700 feet from the main trail. Getting to this peak involved stepping over about 50 logs total. So, this will give you a preview of what it will be like if you happen to hike to Escudilla peak, with about 6 times more logs to step over.

We made it back to the trailhead before dark and drove back to our trailhead. When we got there it was starting to get dark.

Stats:
----------
Distance (round trip) = 8.5 miles
AEG = 1,687 feet
Strava moving time = 4 hrs 50 mins
Strava elapsed time = 7 hrs 24 mins

Directions to trailhead: From the center of Alpine, AZ, drive North on US-191 for 5.6 miles. Turn right going East on FSR 8056. Older maps may show this as Rt 56. Continue for 3.9 miles. At the junction, stay left. Continue for 0.3 miles to the Escudilla Lookout Trailhead #308.

I hiked three wilderness areas in three days, staying in the White Mountain Lodge in Greer each night. The first day was a jaunt up the Escudilla Lookout Trail. I really noticed the altitude on day one. I was an hour quicker coming down than going up! As I approached the trailhead, it looked like it might be pretty disappointing with the scarring from the 2011 Wallow Fire, but once I got out there, it was less depressing. The aspens are recovering fast, and while it was well past fall color season, I can see that this area would be spectacular in early October.

Lower on the hills, aspens dominate, with a fir here and there. Higher up, spruces take over, and then mostly burn scar and golden grass.

Disappointingly, climbing the tower is not allowed.

The road to the trailhead is good for an ordinary car, and the trail is in great shape up to the tower.

It has been 5 years since I hiked up to Escudilla Mountain, so I decided to hike this one again and hopefully see some nice aspen foliage. I'd say that aspens in this area are at or near peak right now, which made for an amazing hike up to the fire lookout tower.

The trail to the lookout tower was in great shape -- there were 3-4 down trees across the trail, which was not difficult to deal with. There were lots and lots of yellow leaves to be seen along the way.

I had been to the summit twice before, but my hiking partner had never been, so we headed to the summit from the lookout tower. It was a real slog dealing with all of the deadfall -- it was much worse than I remembered it being in 2018, which was the last time that I had been to the summit. We managed to make it over there though, and it was just as bad on the way back to the trail.

This is always a nice hike(at least to the fire lookout tower), and it was especially so today with all of the yellow leaves!

Day 1 of 3 in the White Mountains.

My first time on this trail. The remnants of the 2011 Wallow fire were clearly evident, but the remaining conifers, aspen, as well as the new growth aspen, still look nice. Walking through the standing matchsticks was eerie, with the gusty winds singing in the breeze.

We made it to and climbed to the tower, which is missing its floor, compliments of the Wallow fire. Winds were gusting probably in the 50 mph range, making it a short stay up top.
[ youtube video ]

We contemplated hiking over to the true high point. The endless line of dead soldiers and the need to find and set up camp before dark outweighed that.

An enjoyable first hike for the trip.

bruce put together a three day trip to the white mountains
i hadn't been there in eight years and hadn't hiked escudilla in at least 20 years
we got going just after noon
the first mile is through the pre-wallow fire aspen trees, then the trail follows an old road bed through meadows
the upper half showcases the results of the wallow fire with downed and burned trees
even the floor of the tower burned
we explored around the tower for awhile and checked out the views
couldn't see a decent route to the high point
nice to be back here, but it sure looks at lot different
good choice for a travel day
using bruce's stats except for my break time
aeg was very close, but my mileage was a couple tenths shorter

Bruce organized a three day trip to the White Mountains. Kelly and I joined him.
I had not hiked any of the trails in the area before and I was looking forward to new scenery.
We started hiking in the afternoon following the drive up. Nice stands of aspen as we began, giving way to huge Wallow Fire burn area that are recovering with small aspen growth.We climbed most of the way up the fire tower for some good long range views.
Good first hike. :)

I set off on a tour de notoneteens at higher elevations with a return trip up the Esk. The main trail is in fine shape. The lower aspens are progressing nicely twelve years on, but it's still slow growth up top. Made my way over to the true high point, entertaining myself in the jigsaw puzzle of downed aspen trees by playing an outdoor version of "the floor is lava". It's amazing how rarely you have to touch the ground, and I found it to be easier to stay on top of the deadfall, rather than trying to climb over and under it. Quite a bit of elk scat up here, and also some very fresh mountain lion poop. No sightings of either one though.

On the way down, I decided to attempt to make a loop with the Government Trail. I had very low expectations for this trail, and my expectations were met! :sweat:

The tread can be followed for the most part, with just a couple of short stretches where post-fire flooding has eroded the obvious route. But it's a near-constant mess of dead trees and new growth. I didn't count, but I am certain that the number of trees I climbed over was in the triple digits. There has been no attempt to work on this trail since the fire, and I'm not sure they'll ever put the effort in to clear it again, though I can hope. It really wouldn't take much more than a dedicated effort from a team with saws.

The bottom section follows an old two track and was less obstructed. A herd of over 30 elk were not thrilled with seeing a human on this route today. I'm guessing it doesn't happen too often.

I took a break when I got to the road perhaps hoping to go full cletus on the 2 mile road walk back up to the trailhead. No such luck today however as not a single vehicle passed by and I hoofed it the whole way. If planning this loop (why you would?, I'm not sure!) and no shuttle involved, it probably makes sense to do the road walk at the beginning.

But unless the FS gets out there to clean the Gubbmit Trail, I really wouldn't recommend it to anybody who doesn't find some enjoyment from the kind of work and pain it currently provides. :)

Chris, Minte and I met up with Don to hike Escudilla on the 4th. We had the trailhead to ourselves upon arrival. We started after 8am and finished about 3+ hours later. Definitely getting greener up there after the 2011 Wallow Fire. Still a long way to go before the area is recovered. It's a fresh start with new growth for this mountain. Interesting to see it evolve.

Escudilla Trail hike. With the rain last night, I wondered how wet it would be. Not bad at all, even the dirt road in was only damp. Started at 6:30am so I'd avoid any storms. Figure I'd be safe until about noon, but I don't want to take a chance on getting caught on the mountain in a thunderstorm.
Wildlife...saw 3 wild turkeys run across the road on the way in, 4-6 elk on the edge of the bowl on top of the mountain, several deer, and a couple grouse. Wish I could've gotten photo of all of them, but it's hard to capture a moving target.

The trail itself is not that hard. Well-marked, a gradual uphill climb. You start in aspens for about the first 3/4 mile to mile, then break out of the trees near the edge of the bowl near the top. My "high point" was at 10,742' about 1.5 miles in. This is where I saw several elk and a couple deer. The difficulty is the elevation. Starting at 9,600', you gradually climb. I made quite a few stops on the way up to catch my breath. It ain't a race, it's there for enjoyment. Once you drop into the bowl, you see a number of burned-out trees from previous fires (I think 1951 and 2011). Going through a meadow, you'll climb to the old fire lookout/observation tower. I turned back after 1.94 miles, figuring I wouldn't see any more from the base of the tower than I'd already seen.

I'd really looked forward to this hike with anticipation, and I wasn't disappointed. Both with the scenery and the sense of accomplishment for finishing. I didn't know how I'd perform at 10,000'+. The altitude will get you, even if you're in good shape. Between the scenery, the wildlife, and views, it's a great hike. Just be prepared for any storms that might blow in. I had rain gear, water, Gatorade and granola bars just in case.

Finished at 9am. I ran into another man and his daughter near the trailhead as I was finishing. They were the only people I saw. Just the way I like it. 🙂

Been trying to find other spots in Arizona for extreme fall colors besides Lockett Meadow. I will flat out say this is almost better! The first 1 mile of the trail is blanketed in mature & baby aspen. Hardly any conifers whatsoever. The drive in from the 180 is about 5 miles. With the final 2 being complete aspen groves. I’m fully amazed at this place & how it will look in about 5 years once the aspen are reaching 15’+ in height. Once we get to that point, this will be better than Inner Basin. High clearance needed. Probably second best spot for aspen / fall colors in Arizona. West side of Mt. Baldy has sections too, but they are undiscoverable due to tribal closures.

This was day #2 of my 2 days of hiking and driving in the White Mountains. I made it to these peaks and trails:
* Williams Valley Lookout
* P S Knoll
* Reno Lookout
* Gobbler Point
* Escudilla Mountain Trail

Williams Valley Lookout
There was supposedly a "crow's nest" fire lookout here back in the 1920's, but it is long gone.

This was mostly a road walk to get to the former lookout area, but close to the top there was lots of deadfall and some thick vegetation to plow through. There were no views at the top, so as a destination this one is underwhelming. The walk through the woods to get there was pleasant though, and there were a few yellow aspens to see on the way.

P S Knoll
The hike to P S Knoll is a short one on a forest road. I saw 12-15 elk while hiking up the road. There is a cool fire lookout tower on top of the knoll, and I enjoyed this short hike.

Reno Lookout
I could have driven all the way up to this lookout, but I parked down at the Trailhead for Reno Trail #62 and walked up the road. There is a nice lookout tower there, and I enjoyed climbing up it.

Back in 2011 there was concern that the Reno Lookout would be destroyed by the Wallow Fire:
June 1, 2011: "A fire started a few days ago just a couple miles from Reno Fire Lookout (the Wallow Fire) on the A-S National Forest (AZ). It is romping and as of yesterday Reno completely disappeared into the smoke. Awaiting news as to the fate of the tower." (Zeyn O'Leary, Rose Peak Lookout)
June 2, 2011: "The Reno Lookout is safe. A successful burnout operation was done around the tower. Next worry...the town of Alpine. Fire is now 40,000 acres +. It moved 7 miles last night." (Zeyn O'Leary, Rose Peak Lookout)
Gobbler Point
There was supposedly a wooden fire lookout of some sort on Gobbler Point back in the 1930's, but nothing remains of it.

This was a not too exciting road walk -- I could have driven further and on the hike back I wish that I had. There was nothing but brushy vegetation at the high point, and there were no views.

Escudilla Mountain Trail
I did not get here until late in the day, and I was only able to hike up to a little over 10,000 feet due to daylight disappearing. The aspens were awesome on Escudilla, and I am sure glad that I got to see them. I wish that I would have had enough time to hike up to the lookout.

Synopsis
With the aspens being in peak form, the Escudilla Trail was the champion of this hike. I enjoyed going to both the P S Knoll and Reno lookouts. There wasn't much to see atop the Williams Valley Lookout or atop Gobbler Point though.

Distance and elevation gain for these hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of these.

Williams Valley: 5.1 miles with an AEG of 463 feet
P S Knoll: 1.2 miles with an AEG of 226 feet
Reno LO: 1.1 miles with an AEG of 262 feet
Gobbler Point: 4.3 miles with an AEG of 394 feet
Escudilla Trail: 1.6 miles with an AEG of 374 feet

The aspens were peaking on Escudilla Mountain and were amAZing. Aspens elsewhere had their moments, but were mostly isolated/moderate.

Started at 0730. Cool on the way up. We took our time and picked a lot of raspberries. Snack break at the top. While we didn’t see anyone on our way up, we passed about 50 people on our way down; 21 of them were just in one group alone. Warm by the time we finished.

The turn off from the 260 is easy to miss. I wouldn't recommend a car on this road but anything else should be ok. No conventional parking lot but there is an area to pull off.

The TH is at the highest elevation I have encountered. The first mile on this one is tough. Bout half way in it switches from pretty scenery to dead trees. This allows the tower to be spotted early. The views are greatly magnified if you wish to figure out a way up the tower. 😉

After camping out in Alpine for the night, I had time to knock out one hike before a long drive back to Tucson. Escudilla it would be, and my first time on this trail since the Wallow Fire nuked the mountain in 2011. Nice to see some old survivor aspens on the lower portions. The burned aspen sections had thousands of saplings rising from the destruction, as well as delicious raspberries. The summit plateau was sad to see, with little tree regrowth occurring. Reminded me of the summit of Mount Graham. Still a great place to be and still beautiful in its own way, just not the Escudilla of fond memories with Joe and Nick. Checked out the fire tower ruins, and thought that the fire must have been pretty intense to blow out all of the glass and incinerate the tower’s floor. Passed a few other groups coming up on my descent under a few growing puffball clouds, then started the long drive home to Tucson via the Coronado Trail.
