Beautiful day to get out with my Buddy Brian. I haven't hike this since the 2021 fire, really changed this trail. Lots of tree-fall, trail needs to be better maintained. Made it up in 50mins....was a good day and great views of nearby features.

I was on my way back from Colorado and decided to take a detour through Flag in order to hike up to Slate Mountain. The Slate Mountain Trail was closed for over a year due to a forest fire, and only recently reopened.

There were wildflowers galore along the hike, so I am glad that I took the time to do the hike.

At one time there was supposedly a fire lookout on Slate Mountain -- a wood cabin that was constructed in 1941. I saw no signs of it though.

It's a bit of a drive from Doney Park for this little hike, but I had done it only once before, four years ago. I was early enough so that it wasn't unpleasantly warm hiking up. It was quite warm hiking down. I saw two other hikers coming up.

The views of the Peaks, and especially of Kendrick, are really great. Another nice thing about the hike is that it wraps all the way around the mountain, so that you get different views as you hike up.

On the summit, I saw smoky haze, but not definite smoke from the Mangum Fire, way over there on the North Rim. I could see the rim, and Siegfried Pyre stood out clearly. I didn't have a good camera with me (again) so I couldn't get a clear photo of it, so far away.

Straightforward walk up Slate today - great views of Humphreys and Kendrick. More people than I expected, two cars when we got there at 1100 and the five more pulled up within a few minutes. Turned out four of them were from a Sunday morning coffee meetup group who decided to go for a hike. They picked a great day for it.

Took 180 to FR 191, hiked, then kept going west on 191 and came back mostly via 760 with a couple of side trips here and there. Roads almost totally dry. Sedan clearance to the TH, high clearance required soon after that.

Denny suggested we hike Bill Williams trail this week. Some feather head said it was too far to drive for just 7 miles so Denny added 2 more hikes. The cackler flew the coop so we hiked without him. We arrived at the Bill Williams trail about 7am and it was nice and cool out. There were no clouds in the sky but the hike through the trees was completely shaded. We stopped to visit Mark in the tower. Mark has been on HAZ and expressed some interest in Cactus to Clouds after some trail talk. We passed several people on the hike down and it had started to warm up at the bottom. Next Denny drove over to the Red Mountain trail while I relaxed. It was warm at the start but shortly after the start clouds moved in and the hike was nice. Denny and I explored the rock formations before turning back. There was talk of a future summit attempt but nothing planned. Next it was on to Slate Mountain to complete the turkey. (not the one who didn't show) Denny was looking for FR191 but wasn't sure which mile marker it was near. We were going to pull over to access HAZ for more info and turned into FR191. The drive in was slow in the car as Denny avoided the mud holes and rocks. Once at the trailhead I could hear thunder claps in the distance. We proceeded up the trail but kept watch of the sky. The trail is well groomed and the slope is gradual so you can maintain a good pace. There are flora labels along the way but some of the plants have seen better days. The summit was windy and we didn't stay long with possible thunder storms around. On the hike down (& up) we noticed a section that we could smell smoke and the air felt warm but could see no sign of fire? We finished the hike and got back on the road. While Denny was driving down I17 we saw a HAZ sticker on an SUV. I said it looked like Kyle's ride but wasn't sure. We caught up in the rain caused traffic slow down and made contact. A good day hiking in northern AZ. Thanks for driving Denny.

Wally and I were in the area so we hit this trail also. Circle trail may be a better name as you kind of circle two mountains before topping out. Not to steep but still a little climb. Great views from the top and a few hundred Lady Bugs were there as well. Wind and clouds were still picking up. Wally set a good pace and we were done in no time. :D
The rain finally hit around Sunset Point and rained until we got to Phoenix. We even had a rare treat of seeing Tough_Boots. We figured Lily might be in there as well. If only we had known we could have bought him a slice of pizza in Flag.... :D

We started our day with Slate Mountain because it was a short & relatively easy hike. The climb to the summit follows an old road so it’s easy going. It was a hot & sunny day and we were glad to be hiking in the morning. We topped out and took a short break. From there we flew back to the trailhead and really enjoyed the views. Only saw a handful of people on this hike so the solitude was nice.

A quick hike to a great view. You can see the North Rim, plus the Peaks, Kendrick, etc. Of North Rim landmarks, some I could identify were Powell Plateau, Swamp Point and Siegfried Pyre.

This Easter, after church, the kids and I decided to go out and enjoy this beautiful Flagstaff weather with a hike up Slate Mountain.

We had the entire trail to ourselves and enjoyed the gentle 1k elevation and switches to the top. Great views, with clear skies, of Peaks, Kendrick and Red Mountain.

Once at the top, we enjoyed some Subway that dad hauled up in the pack!!! Bekah found a nice horny toad (see pics).

On the way back, we stopped for some slushes at Circle K!!

Great day!

after kendrick, drove north to slate mountain
this was a new one for me and it's a good one
easy grade, switchbacks and a complete circle around the mountain near the summit
good views of the peaks, kendrick, red mountain and i might have been able to see the north rim
saw maybe three other people
another classic and a peak :)
p.s. the directions could use one more clarification:
forest road 191 is between mile marker 242 and 243 and features a large sign
i'll post a photo of the sign later

This is an awesome little hike with some truly incredible views at the top — a real gem. The only precautionary notes are: 1. There is not much shade on this trail. I would avoid it on a really hot day. 2. As near as I can tell, FR191 is closed in the winter and reopens in the spring, after most of the snow melts. It is a MESS when it is wet. Best months to hike this trail are probably May, June and October.

Based on other triplogs, there seems to be quite a discrepancy of the true elevation gain. For me, I use Trimble Backpacker with GPS and it gave me an elevation gain of 1178, which seems to be very similar to a recent log but far different than others. Go figure.
Regardless, it was a beautiful clear day of 80 degrees and as most have previously mentioned, I was the only one on the trail. I did not see any wildlife today, though the cicadas were out in full force (no doubt because of the light rain we had here in Flagstaff yesterday). In all, it was a great hike on a Sunday afternoon, not overly challenging but the panoramic views were well worth the trip.
FR191 to the trailhead is passable with a car, but there are a few spots to be overly cautious around if you do not have high clearance. One note though - it was previously noted that the turnoff to FR191 is exactly 20 miles from Snowbowl Road. It is not. It is just under 18.9 miles, so if you go 20 miles you will be just about to Red Mountain. The best recommendation is to reset your trip right at Snowbowl Road, and when you hit 18.6 mile or so you should see a clearing ahead from the trees you have driven through. FR191 is immediately to the left at the end of the trees and at the beginning of the clearing. If you miss it, there is another FR about 1/4 up the road you can turn around.

Our second stop on the drive back to the valley was Slate Mountain. This was perfect for me at this point in my weekend. The grade is extremely moderate, following an old roadbed up to the top of the mountain. We were able to move pretty well and made it the 2.2 miles to the summit in under 45 minutes. Had it been steeper, I would have had trouble because I was getting pretty tired after my canyon hikes over the weekend.

It was a little bit warm in the sun, the first 100 degree day in the valley was awaiting us, but the breeze on the mountain was nice and refreshing. The view of the SF Peaks from here is great, and there was a surprising amount of snow on both the peaks and Kendrick.

With a deadline to get back home, we quickly headed back down the mountain and hit the road. Nobody else on the trail or even the road to the TH on this perfect Sunday in April. Strange.

When John was hiking his book, he needed a ride to do this one and I obliged. I learned a lot that day from the signs and also learned John can open beer bottles with his teeth.

In search of Cercocarpus Montanus…I told Chums about the allusive Mountain Mahogany and he told me about when he was a teenager his parents bought an apple tree and planted it and now it bears golden fruit or something like that. This was another good leg stretcher and ankle de-tightener. Hard-boiled eggs were kicking in and last nights Mexican was kickin out. Great weekend…thanks to all who were a part of it. Glad I made it home in time to spend some time with my daughter and her friend before I went to do some other stuff with my wife and son.

Slate Mountain is the perfect follow up to a tough day in the canyon. The trail is very nice (and easy), has incredible views as mentioned in the description, and is only 2 miles from Highway 180. Go check it out if you feel the need to stretch your legs while heading to or coming from the Grand Canyon.
