Family weekend (3 kids 7-11, 1 adult) at the Grand Canyon. Decided to do the "tourist" version of the park to get a different perspective.

Thursday
After a quick stop at Cornish Pasty in Flag for an early dinner (yum! kids were unimpressed) we came in via the East Entrance, arriving at Desert Watchtower around 6:30pm, about 20 mins before the scheduled "sunset talk". This turned out to be a very focused interview / podcast recording about ancient basket weaving, testing young kid patience, so we bailed about halfway through and watched the sunset under spitting rainclouds and cold winds. Finished the drive to Maswik Lodge, quickly unpacked, and had a second dinner at the Pizza Pub. Lost power during dinner (which was exciting) and several times overnight due to the storms.

Friday
After a few hours we headed out at 6:30am to walk the Rim Trail from the Village -> Mather Point. Saw plenty of wildlife (including sheep near El Tovar!) and only a few people out this early. Trail of Time was interesting, kids enjoyed comparing the different textures of the rock layers, and the Geology museum made a nice end-cap to that section. Mather Point was super busy by 9am so we skipped over to the Visitor Center for breakfast & Junior Ranger booklets. Oldest was stoked to find scorpion lollipops at the Cafe. After breakfast we rode the Kaibab bus to S Kaibab trailhead, said hi to the mules, and then followed a use trail to Yaki Point (probably wasn't supposed to) before riding the bus(es) back to the Market for lunch at the Deli.

Kids were getting tired by now, so after a quick stop at the Backcountry Office for some intel we crashed at the hotel for an hour. Then it was off to a geology talk by Ranger Russel, who was easily the star of the trip, who gave a very engaging presentation with a lively Q&A before swearing in the Junior Rangers. We then drove back to the Village and took the Hermit Rd bus to Monument Creek Vista and a "this is forever" hike to Hermit's Rest. Showers to the west made some fantastic views along the way, but the limited ice cream selection at the 'Rest almost led to a mutiny. We took the bus back and had a sub-par dinner in the food court, capped with some extravagant desserts to make up for the "why do we need to walk this when there's a bus next to us" afternoon hike.

Saturday
Early start and checkout, followed by a fantastic breakfast at The Foodie Club in Tusayan. Easily the best food from the whole trip. Drove through Bearizona to break the drive up, then took 89 back to Phoenix for a change in scenery.

Final thoughts: being a tourist was an interesting take on the 'Canyon, the bus system was great and the rangers were all awesome & knowledgeable. My only complaint would be around the food price-to-quality ratio. Both the food & lodging within the canyon were quite pricy, and while the lodging was fine, the food was rough. If we do this again I'll be bringing most of our meals.

Hiked the Rim trail from Mohave Point to Powell Point on our return from Dripping Springs.

Victoria wanted to see some more of the rim trail while we were on the West side of the park and so we decided to hike a stretch of the Rim trail between 2 of the westbound shuttle stops.

The views were great especially at Mojave and Hopi Point were great with several sections of the river and one set of rapids (likely Hermit Rapids) visible from the rim. We were even able to see a group of rafters take on the rapids in the distance.

The extra mile and a half was enough to convince Victoria to call it a day, everyone else was ready to go back to the campsite after the first hike but it was a nice addition.

This is a great section of the rim trail to hike.

The Rim is hilly! Who knew? I started by Bright Angel Bikes, rode the paths to the Hermit Road, and then out the road to Monument Point, after which it's okay to ride on the rim path. Then to the Hermit trailhead. I stopped a lot along the way, chatted with other cyclists and walkers, and looked at the views. The other folks were from places such as Italy, New Zealand, and Oklahoma.

Then I rode back to near the Visitor Center, but instead of going to my car, I figured I'd check out the trail in the other direction. So, I rode to the South Kaibab Trailhead near Yaki Point. This route was a bit too busy with tourists in places. Glad I went on a weekday.

It was my first visit to the S. Rim since October 2019, when I hiked down the Bright Angel Trail to meet a private river trip. I've been on another river trip since then, and I drive down Diamond Creek Road for my job about 3X a week, all summer, but somehow, I don't seem to get myself to the Rim. It was about time, and it encouraged me to think about backpacking the Canyon again. I'll have to actually start hiking again...

Techie info: The bike is a Salsa Journeyman flatbar Sora 700, size XS. It's supposed to be a gravel touring bike. The newer models have dropped the "sexist" name, and they are now called the Journeyer. I have some buyer's regret, for a lot of reasons, but it's still a pretty nice ride. I've had it for a couple of years. It didn't come with a granny low, and I had the gearing completely changed. What they were able to install still does not have a very low granny gear. I've been on a couple of short tours with it. On dirt, I'd prefer my mountain bike and BOB trailer. For pavement touring, I'm looking at getting a traditional touring bike, maybe next year. No, not a Surly. A Kona Sutra, or a Fuji.

A great day for a hike along the rim. A leisurely walk with the husband and C made it fun and relaxing. I highly recommend the hike if your looking for something above the rim with amazing views.

Walked or hiked from the Back Country Ranger Office to Monument Creek Vista, then took the Red Route Bus the rest of the way. Clouds moving in later in the hike created a drab overcast.

Tourists these days seem to be almost exclusively Europeans. Far fewer Asians than in the past, but they're still here. As is typical, almost no Americans, and most of them are over 60.

Wife and I did an over nighter at the Canyon. Stayed at Yavapai Lodge. Nice accommodations. No AC, but when the highs are in the 50's, that is not a concern. From the lodge we cut through the forest to get to the Rim Trail and made our way to the Village. From there we cherry picked our way out Hermits Rest, alternating between hiking and taking the red shuttle. With the wind it was very chilly. Actually had a few snow flurries come down as we were hiking. If it hadn't been so cold, we probably would have done more walking. As it was, I had to remember to turn off my garmin every time we boarded the bus and then to turn it on again when we started walking. Beautiful views. Clouds painted a great mosaic, causing a constantly changing view even while standing in one place.

Visitor from Texas in Town so did the usual site seeing things. Snowed on the way up to the canyon and the next two days were clear but the temperatures never got above 34 degrees. Took the Rim Trail to Hermit rest but only got to The Abyss where we turned around. The trail was really icy in spots making it difficult to walk. Took the road in some areas. I really need to invest in a set of crampons for this type of hiking. The weather made for great views of the canyon. This was the emptiest I have seen this place in well over 40 years, not sure if it was because of the long weekend just prior to getting here or if it was the weather reports showing highs in the low 30's. Either way it was a great trip. This is not a trail you pick when you're looking for a "real hike" but a really nice trail if you are showing someone the canyon. I have been on this trail many times the first with my wife when we first got married then after that every time a relative came out from back east to visit.

We needed an easy warm up hike prior to the Rim to Rim the next day but didn't want to over do it. So the Rim Trail was a good option. Hiking from Maswick Lodge past the Bright Angel TH and westbound on the Rim Trail towards Hermits Rest in the early morning hours. Hiked the first 3 miles in the dark and then stopped for the sunrise. Very overcast which limited some of the views but the clouds started to break up as the morning progressed. Eventually we made it to Hermits Rest and then found a spot above Hermit Trail to enjoy the view. After the break we took the bus back to the Village.

After coming down with a sinus infection of sorts, I decided descending to the bottom of the Canyon was not going to work so I opted for staying up in the cooler weather. I hiked down Hermit trail about a mile or so and turned but up the hill. The Rim trail is nice and flat and mostly paved but I ventured off on the dirt path which had some nice drops along the way. The trail went by fast and so I hiked an extra mile past the Bright Angel trailhead and back. The weather was great as I wasted time walking around, napping, talking on the phone and running in to Boone up on the rim. If I can stay healthy I may venture into the big ditch again someday...

We had some friends in town from Kansas City who had never been to the Canyon before. After spending the morning in Flagstaff, we headed north and were able to pickup the last available campsite at Mather (more comfortable for the out-of-towners than forest road camping :( ).

We did a short stroll along the Rim Trail to Hopi Point in the afternoon. I had never been on this (mostly) paved trail before. I had tempered my expectations, knowing we would be walking between large tour groups and not have much solitude. I was wrong though. The views were, of course, amazing. And that overcame any problems I had with the lack of solitude. It doesn't really matter that you're on a paved highway with minimal elevation change because...you're at the frickin' GC.

The Rim Trail provides a walk along memory lane: from the first time ever visiting the canyon to the first long backpacking trip below the rim.

Looked good on paper! I thought it would be nice to knock off a couple trails I hadn't done at the Grand Canyon. I didn't plan on the 150 Temps ;) . LP agreed to go along and do some tourist stuff too. We did the Rim Trail first to miss most of the tourist Some great views. With the temps we should have saved the easy for last. We hiked to Dripping Springs next then went up and down Waldron before exiting up Hermit. I enjoyed all the trails but I really needed LP as my motivational hiking partner to get me up that last mile and a half. The ice cream from Hermits Rest chased with a cold coke was so so good!
After the hike we took the shuttle back to the car then went and hit Tusayan Ruins and Shoshone point. Shoshone point had some great views and the friend LP made at the Ruins was funny.
We saw some great views and got a great hike in and cramps to go with it. Including the drive we saw Deer,Elk,Antelope, cool birds, and cool lizards. We also got to see the biggest Meteor I'll probably ever see. It lit up our whole car like someone was shinning a flood light on us. We looked up just in time to see it and the tail burning out. Very Cool! Thanks for everything LP, great trip! :y:

The Turtle invited me to tag along for a Canyon hike. Hard to say no. We departed the Valley at 1 AM planning to return that evening. Between Williams and Grand Canyon we were treated with an up close (we thought) and personal encounter with a meteor entering the atmosphere. Wow! Daylight at 3:57 AM.

We hiked the Rim trail to the Hermit trail, to Dripping Springs, back to the Waldron trail, up and down Waldron and back up Hermit. Nice to hike to a couple spots I hadn't been before. Felt like a tourist at times on the Rim trail, but the views really are nice. It got a little warm by the end of the hike. Ice cream at Hermits Rest hit the spot! :)

On to more tourist activities with the Turtle... Fun hike. Thanks Denny. :)
