Family weekend (3 kids 7-11, 1 adult) at the Grand Canyon. Decided to do the "tourist" version of the park to get a different perspective.

Thursday
After a quick stop at Cornish Pasty in Flag for an early dinner (yum! kids were unimpressed) we came in via the East Entrance, arriving at Desert Watchtower around 6:30pm, about 20 mins before the scheduled "sunset talk". This turned out to be a very focused interview / podcast recording about ancient basket weaving, testing young kid patience, so we bailed about halfway through and watched the sunset under spitting rainclouds and cold winds. Finished the drive to Maswik Lodge, quickly unpacked, and had a second dinner at the Pizza Pub. Lost power during dinner (which was exciting) and several times overnight due to the storms.

Friday
After a few hours we headed out at 6:30am to walk the Rim Trail from the Village -> Mather Point. Saw plenty of wildlife (including sheep near El Tovar!) and only a few people out this early. Trail of Time was interesting, kids enjoyed comparing the different textures of the rock layers, and the Geology museum made a nice end-cap to that section. Mather Point was super busy by 9am so we skipped over to the Visitor Center for breakfast & Junior Ranger booklets. Oldest was stoked to find scorpion lollipops at the Cafe. After breakfast we rode the Kaibab bus to S Kaibab trailhead, said hi to the mules, and then followed a use trail to Yaki Point (probably wasn't supposed to) before riding the bus(es) back to the Market for lunch at the Deli.

Kids were getting tired by now, so after a quick stop at the Backcountry Office for some intel we crashed at the hotel for an hour. Then it was off to a geology talk by Ranger Russel, who was easily the star of the trip, who gave a very engaging presentation with a lively Q&A before swearing in the Junior Rangers. We then drove back to the Village and took the Hermit Rd bus to Monument Creek Vista and a "this is forever" hike to Hermit's Rest. Showers to the west made some fantastic views along the way, but the limited ice cream selection at the 'Rest almost led to a mutiny. We took the bus back and had a sub-par dinner in the food court, capped with some extravagant desserts to make up for the "why do we need to walk this when there's a bus next to us" afternoon hike.

Saturday
Early start and checkout, followed by a fantastic breakfast at The Foodie Club in Tusayan. Easily the best food from the whole trip. Drove through Bearizona to break the drive up, then took 89 back to Phoenix for a change in scenery.

Final thoughts: being a tourist was an interesting take on the 'Canyon, the bus system was great and the rangers were all awesome & knowledgeable. My only complaint would be around the food price-to-quality ratio. Both the food & lodging within the canyon were quite pricy, and while the lodging was fine, the food was rough. If we do this again I'll be bringing most of our meals.

This is George’s 4th grade year for Every Kid in a Park” to get into all federal lands and water for free for our family for a year. We went to at least 11 for free two years ago when Caroline was in 4th grade. We spent last night at Maswick Lodge. Got up for sunrise pics and coffee and hot chocolate at Bright Angel fountain shop. Caroline is in a photography elective this semester in 6th grade - and she’s using my old phone as a camera. Weather high is 73, low 37. I found the nook where I nursed Caroline Oct 2009 - and we sat up there again to recognize how important moment was 11 years ago. We re-read all my triplogs of the Grand Canyon here on HAZ last night. The kids like reading our family history here. #HAZitRocks #tenderChickens

South Kaibab, River Trail, Bright Angel, Rim Trail. Alpine start. The Canyon was sparsely populated today. You can really feel the impact of COVID-19 and the end of the summer season. I encountered no one the entire way down Kaibab, and few people until 1.5 Mile hut, after which it was the usual mob. Rim Trail, to get back to the car, was less crowded than I've seen it outside of winter.

South Kaibab to Tonto to Bright Angel and back on Rim Trail. Nothing special for this particular hike - Canyon is beautiful as always. Just trying to get my Grand Canyon legs for a hike to the Clear Creek CG in September, and a Rim to Rim as part of a SOBO AZT section hike in October.

After hiking Waldron did a late morning hike with my wife from the visitor's center. Hit Mather Point and then walked toward the Village. Walked to the point where we had joined the trail the day before. Weather was great and the trail was busy! Can't imagine what this is like during peak time. :o I was amazed at the number of people who were testing their courage ( and intelligence) by walking, posing, sitting.....on the very edge of some very sharp precipices. :o :o I'm sure they made for some great pictures. (Some truth here, but also some jealousy. I kind of, (only kind of) wish I had the stomach to be able to do some of the edge walking that was on constant display). Over the years my comfort level has grown, but I don't think it will ever reach this level. Elk seemed to be everywhere. Saw 5 around the Yavapai Lodge and 3 more along this trail. People were taking as many pictures of the elk as they were of the Canyon, my wife included. :? Nice quality with wife :)

Daughter had a gymnastics meet in Flagstaff so we made a winter family vacation out of it! Took everyone to the Grand Canyon on Sunday and had a great time. My wife, my son, and my in-laws had never been, so it was great to have them experience it for the first time. Stopped at Mathers lookout and walked over to the village. The girls did a little shopping and I did my best to not venture too far down Bright Angel.. It was a test of will that is for sure! The snow covered cliffs were a treat and everyone enjoyed themselves.

**Also she got 5th place overall!! and Gold on the Vault!!***

Went down BA to Indian Gardens then back to get my first taste of canyon hiking. We took Rim Trail from Mather Point to BA TH around 7 AM and we were dropping into the canyon around 8 AM. The weather was great, a little warm at the beginning of the ascent but we beat the heat back to the top. I didn't have to stop once on the ascent (except for a mule trail), which felt great!

My first visit to the GC... When I was a little boy I used to pretend the 20 foot gullies on our land was the Grand Canyon. I dreamed of one day seeing it and today I did. I am not particularly religious but seeing the GC was life affirming. Although it was really just a sightseeing trip, I cannot wait to hike there. Rim to Rim just became a new obsession... Geology is awesome!

Goodly amount of snow. Forgot to say I saw my first pronghorns yesterday on our way back from Sedona. Stoked!

I had time today after lunch to take a stroll to see the fog filling up Grand Canyon. It was gorgeous! I brought along an umbrella since there was a bit of a drizzle. The few tourists along the rim were looking a bit bedraggled and disappointed. They wanted a better view, but mostly all that could be seen was white fog. But every so often a view of the Canyon would present itself.

My camera battery was dead, unfortunately.

My goal in these little walks is to get to know some of the tourist areas I haven't seen before. As a backpacker, I always used to just park the car and grab my pack and head down the trails. Knowledge of the rim museums and other features will help me in my job.

I hadn't been to Verkamp's, so I walked there to see it. I bought a book about Mary Colter, the architect. I also enjoyed the geology information along the Rim trail, and the Super Group rocks on display.

On the way back I took a short-cut through the woods to see the cemetery and the Shrine of the Ages church. There were numerous cow elk and their babies resting about the cemetery and at the grounds of the church. They showed very little concern when I passed by.

I looked in vain for John Hance's grave, since I had heard it is quite prominent there, but somehow I missed it. I did see Ralph Cameron's, Pete Berry's and William Bass's gravestones. However, most of the graves were fairly recent. This surprised me a great deal.

So, I enjoyed my little lunch break walk, and hope to have many more.

Volunteering at GCVC on Sundays, got to join my ranger friend on her Mather Rove.
We walk all over the area answering questions, explaining geology pointing out condors etc

One lady asked us, "Why did they build the canyon so close to the lodge?"
I read that exact question in a grand canyon book once...its amazing what people come up with!
"Why do they let the elk out so late?"
