Our second time on this loop. Started at 0950. Only 3 other vehicles parked there. Temp was ~78°. Started up Palo Verde Trail. Numerous colorful wildflowers in full bloom greeted us immediately. The trail was easy and very well-maintained, mostly gravel, with numerous ups and downs as we ascended and descended the hills adjacent to the lake. The views were beautiful everywhere, with the lake, the clear blue sky, the cacti, the Mazatzal mountains in the distance, and the wildflowers. Birds were singing throughout. There were no other people on the trail, but there were multiple boats, kayaks, and jetskis on the water. We stopped numerous times to enjoy the views and take pictures. There was 1 rattlesnake along the way, in the middle of the trail, but he quickly slithered off the trail. The trail ended at SB Cove, where there were at least 40 vehicles parked, including multiple RVs, with a lot of people in or near the water. We headed over to the road and looped back to the starting point. The road was much smoother, straighter, shorter distance, and less hilly than the trail. There were many brightly colored wildflowers along the road as well. There were some stops to splash water on our heads, as the sun glare was intense. Overall a beautiful, colorful day.

You hear on the news the reservoirs are all full, but I have not found that this is the case. Bartlett is part of the Verde River system, as opposed to the Salt River system, and it seems that Bartlett is no as full as the Salt River reserviors. Maybe they have kept it a bit lower to handle expected rains.

Anyhow, the flowers were quite good, although I have been expecting a spectacular season this year it has been good to excellent, not quite as good as expected with the rains. Still good flowers to see out here and well worth the trip.

I decided to check out an area that I'd not been to before. LP and I started to a surprisingly full boat launch at Bartlett Lake. There must have been 50+ vehicles and trailers on a chilly very windy morning. We later learned we were in the midst of a Bass fishing tournament.

We started on the Jojoba Trail, headed north for our CCW loop. This trail roller coasters roughly the shoreline, 1.25 miles to the picnic area at Rattlesnake Cove.

From here we hit the Palo Verde Trail which is a 4.5 mile continuation of the roller coaster. Great views of the lake and Mazzys the entire way. There has been very recent maintenance done to the northern part of this trail. Both trails were in decent shape.

Past SB Cove we just followed the shoreline until we couldn't anymore. From here we followed a wash up to what is now decommissioned FR42. A bit of a road walk and more old roads completed the loop.

It ended up being almost perfect weather. Just a smattering of poppies and lupines on the day. Good to catch up with John.

I hadn't been to Bartlett Lake in many years, so when Bruce suggested a hike there I quickly volunteered to attend.
Started out hiking with temps in the 50's, but a stiff breeze made it feel much cooler. Good for hiking.
First part of the hike was on developed trails along the lake. Lots of twists and turns, ups and downs.
As we hiked north we left the trails and followed washes and an old FS road that can't pass for a road anymore. The final leg had a bit of asphalt then down a wash, up a trail to finish at the car.
Bruce spotted a couple eagles, of course.
Pretty hike. Always good to fly with an Eagle. :)

Had not been to Bartlett lake in about 40 years! Hiked from SB cove to Rattlesnake cove. We deviated from the HAZ track about halfway through out of a wash where the trail disappeared. It was an interesting 5 Mile hike that felt like 8.

Hadn't done this hike for a while, and we had some friends in town looking for a reasonable hike. Typically we would avoid this hike on the weekend, but figured if we started at the break of dawn, we would avoid folks for at lease 1/2 of the hike.

Well, the water was quite low in Bartlett (50-70 feet below the high line?). Still the hike was nice, and surprisingly, we didn't run into anyone for most of the hike. I assume this is because the dock was closed, and so most folks went somewhere else.

We picked up quite a lot of trash in the last 1/2 mile of the hike. People just go out there with their 6pack and get drunk and leave bottles. I guess the world is their trash can.

Decided to check out the wildflowers, this area tends to be one of the better locations this time of year. Not as much action as last year. But did come up on quite a few buzzards. They tend to hang out at the same location (N33.86206° W111.60785°) in the morning. Usually we spot one or two, but this time there must have been about a dozen in the area. It was quite impressive, but had my telephoto lens, so couldn't get a picture of them all at the same time.

We made a loop of it by going up the wash back to the road. Last year there were quite a bit of flowers in the road area, not so much this year.

Birds, Bees, Butterflies and Blooms. Oh yeah, there was also a Lake and a Reptilian Amputee. I thought Bart was a Roller Coaster, but I soon realized that's it's a much shorter ride. I got a good look at the whole thing from both sides though, which was interesting.

I guess I timed this one about right since it sounds like the Day and Camping Areas are going to be closing. Judging from what I saw at SB Cove, I totally get it. I parked at Rattlesnake Day Use and decided to get Palo Verde done first since it's longer. Good Call. At 6:30 there were a few cars in the parking lot, but not a soul to be seen. If you don't count the Bass Fishermen actually on the lake, I didn't run into another soul for the first 4 hours. This was totally a Photography Hike, as the Birds and the Blooms kept me pretty occupied. If you're into Brittlebush, Lupines and Chuparosa, this Hike's for you. A few sparse patches of Poppies in the first half out and Owl Clover made a showing towards the SB Cove end. Got a Hat Trick of Cardinals before I was even halfway to SB Cove.

When they built this Trail, it's pretty apparent they wanted to keep you on the Lake Side of everything. That means up and down every ridge and in, out and around every inlet and cove. As a Crow flies, the distance is probably less than a mile. I made a mistake and wore the wrong shoes. Trail is hard packed with that fine little scree that makes balding Trail Runners lose their grip occasionally. But I never went down, at least not intentionally. This puppy was a bit more of a workout than I expected, but it was all good. The Weather has been hard on this Trail and it could use some Love at some point. Took my first long break overlooking SB Cove. Wasn't quite halfway yet, but after seeing how SB Cove looked, it was good spot. Continued on after the break, but didn't go quite all the way in to the Recreation Area itself. Started running into people and the Recreation Area was an absolute zoo. Turned around and found an alternative trail that skipped the last peninsula and tied back into the main trail. Cut about 3/4 of a mile off on the return. I was happy since I'm not a fan of Out and Backs anyway. Always looking for loop options, even if tiny. The Weather was so interesting. Started out the morning with blue, cloudless skies and then by the time I hit SB Cove, big puffy clouds were coming in pretty fast. By the time I got back to Rattlesnake, it was overcast completely. 1/2 mile out from Rattlesnake I started running into people, but only a couple until the Day Use Area itself. Several people fishing off the dock but everyone was spread out there. A lot more people milling around. For some reason, Turkey Vultures were really frequenting this area and swooping in really low. Almost like they were used to being fed by the Fishermen? I don't know, but I swear they were almost taking off people's heads on the dock. I was getting shots of them below me from the parking lot. Apparently they really like hanging out with the crowds as I found their perch later.

Took a long break at the Escape and decided I had just enough daylight left to do Jojoba, so off I went. It was getting dark quicker due to the clouds. Ran into several people doing this trail. For a short trail, it was super nice. Great views all the way. I lost the trail towards the end going through a wash, but picked up a use trail that tied back into it. Found the right trail down to the wash on the way back. Another mini loop. On the way back there's another trail out to a large peninsula and I took that out and back a ways. Didn't go clear to the end of it due to time. From the looks of the sky, there would be no sunset over the lake on this day. Got to the Escape just before dark and drove on out. 2 miles out on Bartlett Dam Road and the sky lit up over Carefree/Cave Creek, but it was short lived and I didn't stop for it.

It was a good day. Got a workout, camera got a workout and I probably set a record for the amount of Images I took on a hike. Tough shooting conditions in a way, the wildflowers were spread out and competing with a lot of different flora and tons of foxtails. After going through all these Photos, I think I'm about bloomed out. Glad I got to finally do these Trails and in a banner wildflower year, I'll probably do them again. They might be nice for a Sunrise/Sunset and/or Storm Shoot too. :D

Totally done trying to cull photos, sorry. I can't spend anymore time on it right now. So it's a Bomb of a Set.

It is hard to find a more scenic hike in the Valley especially this time of year when the wildflowers are in their splendor, numerous and all along the trail and slopes. The poppies were numerous and their happy faces defied one not to smile. Even without the wildflowers, the vegetation is more lush than most Valley trails and of course the healthy mature Saguaro's just add to the beauty. The trail has continuous ups & downs, so one gets a reasonable workout. With the lake and the surrounding mountains, it is wall-wall scenic wonderland. Today, the puffy white cumulus clouds against the blue blue sky, just made for many Kodak moments. Even more surprising, a Saturday with perfect weather with spring wildflowers, and might have passed only a handful of people - go figure!

Maybe at peak. Almost continuous wildflowers in bloom along trail, especially first half. Poppies are numerous along trail, though no huge large patches.

I decided to go back and finish off the Palo Verde Trail from when I did part of it with my family last March. Got to hike with Larry and Rowdy for the first time on this hike. The lake was noticeably lower and the water noticeably clearer than it was 6 months ago. Still nice to have a little change of scenery and hike near the water.

The clouds were out early making for nice hiking. by the end, they left and sun and humidity started to kick in. About a mile and a half in, we saw a rattlesnake. It started buzzing right when I walked past him. Larry made sure Rowdy got past it without getting too close. We tried to get some pictures, but between being in the grass, constant buzzing and moving away, we didn't get much of a shot.

Saw a few hawks, and an owl. They were all flying away by the time we were able to get any pictures. also saw quite a few cardinals on this hike.

On the way back, we took the shortcut trail, which is in my track. I was hoping to go back to the Jojoba Trail and hike a spur of that once I got back to the trailhead, but by the time I got back, it was getting late and I was spent. the ups and downs on this trail, combined with the humidity, made for some slow going. About half way back, Larry said he and Rowdy were going to take a break and I could keep going. I made sure they were both still ok, and then headed back.

Didn't see any other hikers the entire time. The lake was busy with boaters and fishers along the shoreline. Lots of family on the beaches having picnics. Nice to meet Larry and Rowdy for this hike.

My dad is laid up, and several times has mentioned to me his disappointment at not being to get out to see the Super Bloom. 🏥

From previous hikes on Palo Verde Trail #512 at Bartlett Lake, I knew that there would be decent flower coverage. But I had no idea how good.

On the drive down Bartlett Lake Road, from Carefree to Rattlesnake Cove, it was obvious that at the very least there would be epic amounts of lupine. (On the drive back about 1:00 p.m. even more epic amounts of late blooming Mexican Gold Poppy.)

As always, Palo Verde Trail #512 is better exercise than its length and AEG would otherwise indicate.

Besides the Coulter’s Lupine and Mexican Gold Poppy, I spotted owl clover, brittlebush, chuparosa, scorpionweed, desert globemallow, cream cup, chia — not the pets! — lily, desert chicory, fairy duster, wooly daisy, Esteve’s Pincushion, paleface delphinium, dandelion, fiddleneck, flat top buckwheat, fairy duster … and even mutant white poppies! I probably forgot a few. 😁

After the big Saturday Sedona hike, I wanted to take the family out for a shorter hike a little closer to home. I hadn't hiked the trails up by Bartlett Lake in over 15 years. I'm actually not sure if I've even ever hiked the Jojoba Trail.

We got a bit of late start with the longer drive up there, so we only did a little over 4 miles. The Jojoba Trail is only just over a mile, so we hiked about a mile more up along the Palo Verde Trail and turned around. The lake level is obviously pretty high, and you can tell by the vegetation sticking out along the edges of the water. The water also looks pretty brown and cloudy from all the runoff and snowmelt.

The weather was much warmer than the cooler, windy weather in Sedona yesterday, but still very comfortable. Saw more hikers towards the end of the hike, and a few fishers along the shores.

Had a good lunch at the Scottsdale Beer Company on the way home. Nice way to spend a Sunday with the family and a very good weekend of AZ hiking, enjoying the green from the rain and snow.

Mainly looking for wildflowers on this trip. Wanted to do most of the hike and then hop on over to the road where the elusive White Poppies are located in some locations.

It was windy, cold and rainy most of the trip, Even hailed on us for a little while. Flowers are going pretty good, but as you can imagine, the flowers that typically open during the day were all closed. We did spot a few white poppies on the trail, but most are located on the road if you continue past the Rattlesnake Cove turn-off.

Even though my wife was quite miserable, I enjoyed the hike and when the sun broke out from behind the clouds it was great.

In 2017 about this time of year we hiked here, and spotted some Buzzards and an golden eagle.. No luck with that this time.

This is a great casual hike to do during the week when there aren't so many people. We were lucky enough not to see any other hikers today... not to surprising, the weather was not so great for hiking.
