Because of a blown transformer and unplanned power outage on the North Rim — and an extra day spent in Zion — we ended up canceling a day’s worth of hikes on the North Rim. Making the drive in from Zion National Park, we took the picturesque Route 67 and headed straight to the end of Cape Royal Road for our first hike of the day. I had never been to this side of the park before, so it was all new to me. Temperatures stayed in the 60s and 70s all day, which was a treat.

Cape Royal Trail
This is an easy, mostly paved trail that leads you out to the end of Cape Royal, passing directly over Angels Window. You can’t help but be awestruck by the views.

Cliff Spring Trail
This one turned out to be better than expected. It’s a short trail that drops past an ancient granary and into a canyon that opens up with views into the Big Ditch. You walk beneath a nice, subway-like ledge, where more moisture seeps from the walls and ceiling than springs. I followed the trail to its published end, where a faint route could be seen continuing.

Walhalla Pueblo Ruins
We didn’t spend much time here.

Cape Final Trail
Much of this trail winds through the shade of tall ponderosa pines. Along the way, there are a few spots where you can take short side trips for views into the canyon. The payoff is at the end, where you can scramble up a slight mound of boulders, take a break, and soak it all in from the edge.
[ youtube video ]

There’s a sweet camping spot right at the end — we talked to a guy spending the night there who said he was surprised by how many open dates were available when he reserved it.

Point Imperial Overlook
Point Imperial is the highest point in all of Grand Canyon National Park, standing at 8,803 feet. Two hikes begin or end at Point Imperial: the Ken Patrick Trail, which eventually leads back to the lodge, and the Point Imperial Trail, which heads north to the Nankoweap Trail #57. We opted to just hang at the overlook, take in the views, and enjoy some lunch.
[ youtube video ]

North Rim Lodge
Deb had never been to the North Rim Lodge, so we had to stop by for a quick tour. To our surprise, they had just opened the lodge for business about 10 minutes before we arrived. At the time, they were running everything on generators — everything except the restaurants and bar. Full operations were expected to resume by the end of the day on Monday, 6/9/2025, after being down for a week.

We walked around the lodge and out along the Bright Angel Point Trail until we hit the closure. It’s expected to remain closed for the entire 2025 season. We also visited both lookouts below the lodge before heading to Jacob Lake for some dinner and cookies!

After dinner, we made our way to our new "rustic" accommodations at the Lees Canyon Lodge. While the restaurant there is no longer open, we came close to closing down the bar after a long day. Bar hours are 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Great short hike that goes through the forest and ends at an interesting formation. Great views of the canyon and the Painted Desert in the background. There is also a permitted camp spot that would make for a nice easy backpack.

Scored a backcountry permit to camp here on the Rim....Nice place.
Easy, well-treed trail meandering through the woods, ending at an awe-inspiring viewpoint spanning to Point Imperial, The Painted Desert and Unkar Rapid to name a few.

I had a hot spot on my foot when I got to this trail so I was a little whinny. The trail itself was a good stroll through the forest. Pretty much all the way with a few nice viewpoints as you close in on your Final destination :D . The last little rock climb wasn't kid friendly but a couple view points before might be with some hand holding. :D

My son and I took a quick journey north. Stopped in at the GC North Rim for lunch than an enjoyable drive on the eastern road to the "capes and points"....hadn't been out there before. Very nice. We did the 4mi roundtrip walk out to Cape Final. Nice one...we saw about 50 people along the way but N.Rim people are generally good ones.

Cape Final photos:
[ photoset ]

We camped at an overlook point in the National Forest.

I'd always wanted to drive up House Rock Road on the west side of Vermillion Cliffs. Never been up there because I could never win the Wave lottery. We went up anyway with a plan to do the short walk from the Trailhead to Buckskin Gulch just to see the area. Very cool place. We chickened out on descending the 10' obstacle at the top of the first slot (my son has a sore hand and I'm not athletic). The bypass is fun and well cairned these days....we did work to un-Nancy Boy ourselves on the return though by climbing up the 10' debris cliff...not too bad.

Really enjoyed the way the canyon opens up at Buckskin Gulch and seeing the old petroglyphs there.

Encountered two foreign couples heading for the Wave on our way back. Lucky lottery folks...didn't speak English.

We took House Rock Road out the top...no problem except for one muddy creek crossing that stopped at least one small rental car. Home in time for Happy Hour.

I enjoy cape final but only once or twice a summer unless I'm taking a tour out there.

Good chunk of wildflowers, mostly lupine and a few larkspur.

Saw 5 deer and some sort of hawk.

Catching up in logging a great trip AZ Wandering Bear and I took 27 September through 6 October 2016. Cape Final was beautiful. I'm copying the description from AZ Wandering Bear as I have nothing more or new to add to this description:

Day 2 of our 1205 mile road trip in, Bullit, our new overland vehicle started with breakfast in camp at Marble Overlook. This was planned an easy day. We lingered around Marble Overlook taking in the views and then drove south to GCNP and took a left to the Cape Final TH. The change in elevation from Phoenix to here was pretty obvious in the early gentle uphill grade of the trail. We took it slow. The cool temperatures were welcome and the rain stayed away.

The views from the multiple side trails and Cape Final makes for a tremendous payoff for hiking the easy trail. We hung out for a while enjoying the cloud shadows playing on the Canyon below and then made our way back and on over to the North Rim's campground for showers and libations.

My boss from the South Rim came up Monday to help get things settles for my north rim tours. We spent all Monday with our noses in books and hands on paperwork, ugh!

We opted to get some field time today with a quick trip to Cape Final before a phone meeting with the director. Phew!

Really fun to pull out the map and identify Landmarks that I'm not so use to seeing, like Chuar and Siegfried and Cape Solitude from this angle, so cool!

My favorite trail on the North Rim. It is smooth and goes through the forest, doesn't attract huge crowds and cannot accommodate them due to limited parking and most of all because it brings you to Cape Final - a point around which Grand Canyon turns from southbound to westbound, so you have a 270° view of actual Canyon with Vermilion Cliffs as a background on one side and San Francisco Peaks on the other. On the outer side of this turn stands the barely distinguishable Desert View Tower.

This was the highlight of my day at the North Rim, previously doing Bright Angel Point, and then heading out to Cape Royal after. There were five other cars at the parking lot, and I passed four groups of people that were leaving as I hiked in. It turned out to be a nice recipe for solitude. I only had to "share" the view with a German couple that hiked in about the same time I did, but there was ample space out at the point so that I was able to claim some alone time. The hike in was a little remiscent of my South Rim favorite, Shoshone Point. The walk to Shoshone is about half the length and on a road, while this one is on a real single track trail, yet both are relatively mellow walks through Ponderosa Pine, transitioning to PJ woodlands at the canyon rim. On this day, there were even fields of blue lupine, much I like I have so often encountered walking to Shoshone in summer. I was originally planning on backpacking this trail and camping at the point, but my new hammock never came so I just decided to dayhike it, and was able to scope out the hammock camping digs along the way. Found a nice place to string a hammock between two pinons with a view east over the Canyon to the Painted Desert. Spent some time relaxing and soaking up some one-on-one time with the Canyon at a couple different rock outcroppings, then headed back in order to try out Cape Royal at sunset.

Easy hike to stretch my legs. Some water pockets at the rim if you run out of water after 2.1 miles.

Stopped by the BC office to pick up some permits.

October 12-13, AH9 use area. Plan to go down Cottonwood Creek, cross the river then explore up Vishnu Creek. Cross back and hike out Grapevine. Alternate plan: Down Hance, cross near Mineral and explore Asbestos canyon.

November 9-10, AF9. Do Todd Martin's trip up Carbon and Down Lava.

Anyone interested?

This was our second stop of the day. It was late morning and the weather was still holding off. The entrance station said there is a 100% chance of precipitation today. We decided the 4.5 mile hike to Cape Final would be a good option.

The hike follows an old road and there are a few viewpoints along the hike. We continued on and reached the Cape and enjoyed the views as we explored the general area. I thought there were some ruins down below but we couldn’t spot anything worth checking out. The weather started turning as high winds whipped through. After a few minutes we started our return and had a light sprinkle that was enjoyable. This is a nice hike if you want something quick and easy with wonderful views of the eastern part of the Grand Canyon.

Took a trip out to Cape Final before the rain set in. Nice part of the canyon. It really shows how much higher you are than the eastern canyon/Palisades. Nice view over to Cape Solitude and Chuar Butte.

It was fun to spot recognizable landmarks I've been to on the south rim, including Desert View, Tanner, Escalante, Cardenas, Red Canyon, Horseshoe Mesa and Grandview. Always nice to see these places from a different perspective.
