Finally had a break in the heat to do a low elevation hike, which was very exciting. Started at 6:40am, and it was cloudy the whole way until the return leg. Hiked counter clockwise to keep the sun off as much as possible and it worked out well.

Only saw four other hikers all morning.

Not much water out there despite recent rains. A few pools around Garwood Dam and at Wildhorse Tank. Bridal Wreath was bone dry.

Saw two white-tailed bucks with antlers early on Garwood, one sleepy diamondback coiled in the middle of Three Tanks trail, and one roadrunner at Bridal Wreath. Lots of barrel cactus with fiery flower crowns, otherwise not much blooming. Plentiful ripe prickly pear fruit gave me a hankering for jam.

Barrels are blooming but not much else.

Decided to finally check this one off since it was raining I figured it wouldn’t be busy. My suspicions were correct and it was a ghost town. Hiked through the fog which was nice. No shade so I would hate to do this one in the summer or sun. Barely a trickle at the falls.

Cool cloudy day for a hike. Not much water action at the falls but plenty of wildlife.

Spooked a couple deer near the junction for the falls.

Saw a large roadrunner at the falls.

On the way back saw a desert tortoise on the trail shortly before the Three Tanks junction. A young woman coming up from the other way (obviously not local) was worried that it wasn’t in water, and wanted to take it to somewhere with water. I had to explain it was in its natural habitat and that it wasn’t a turtle, and it really just needed to be left alone. :-k

Not far down Three Tanks was the highlight: a Gila monster! I almost ran into the poor fella. He was very deferential but also camera shy. Sharing the trail with a Gila monster made my week.

First trip to Bridal Falls, hadn’t gotten around to it before. Bit disappointing as it was already virtually dry, just a little dripping water. Climbed up above and saw it was virtually dry up there also.

Hiked to Bridal Wreath Falls since the recent rains should have it flowing. The couple times I have been to the falls it was just a trickle going over them. It was perfect this time, just enough water to get the effects of the falls without too much that makes accessing them difficult. Started early morning around 0700 with an overcast sky and an occasional drizzle. All the creeks along the trail were running and it was good to see the desert green again. You could almost hear the cactus cheering. Saw a Rattlesnake along the trail, Ginny's first while hiking, She's seen plenty in my back yard. This rattler held up the tradition of not rattling but then it didn't feel threatened, probably use to seeing people. A couple of others along the trail but for the most part it wasn't crowded. Above the falls is a cascade that looked pretty impressive, Looked like a Bridal Veil (but that's another falls in the Catalina's). It would be nice to check that out some time. After The Bridal Wreath Falls we decided to take a side trip to Ernie's Fall. This Falls is not as popular and is about .4 miles north of the Douglas Spring Trail just across from the Bridal Wreath Trail. The trail had no sign of traffic so we had this falls to ourselves. I actually think this falls is more impressive than the Bridal Wreath Falls. We took a short break here and took a dip before heading out. We headed back along the Three Tanks Trail to the Garwood Trail. The sun was coming out and the final 2 mile walk was really hot. With the temp in the low 90's and the high humidity I'm glad we only had a short distance to go. We kept thinking about the cool water up at Ernie's Falls. Really nice hike because the conditions were just right, Overcast sky with a saturated Desert.

There's a whole mess of trails in this part of Saguaro NP so I just wandered around checking out various washes and watering holes on my way to and from Bridal Wreath Falls.

For some reason I remember this trail being alot flatter. XDDD No idea why I thought that. In any case, I caught the falls when they were just trickling, but I thought that it was absolutely beautiful anyway. It reminded me of the sacred springs of Ireland. Magical.

With all the recent record-breaking monsoon activity I was looking for a waterfall hike outside of our flash flood-prone canyons and chose Bridal Wreath Falls in Saguaro National Park East. Perhaps the biggest flood risk on this hike is the possibility of getting trapped by Monument Wash during the drive out on far east Speedway Blvd. With clear skies this morning and a favorable morning weather forecast, John and I decided to give it a go. We figured we would be done and gone before the proverbial "mainly after 11am" storms moved in, and we were.

After almost an hour drive to the Douglas Spring Trailhead our boots hit the trail at 7:00am. Although it was only 76 degrees it was uncomfortable with high humidity, no breeze and the sun in our face. Bugs were annoying at the trailhead but not so much on the trail. On the way up we passed two impressive (by desert standards) waterfalls before reaching the Bridal Wreath Falls junction at the 2.5 mile point.

Before reaching Bridal Wreath we ran into a Southern Arizona Hiking Club group that was returning from the falls. This particular group normally hikes Blackett's Ridge every Monday morning but could not do so today because Sabino Canyon's parking lot was closed when they got there, so this was their plan B. The Guide indicted that it was the "best" she has ever seen Bridal Wreath Falls.

The final bushwhack up the boulder-strewn creekbed to the base of the falls was somewhat challenging due to relatively high water level. With the robust flow of water this morning I think upper Bridal Wreath may have been more impressive than the lower tier. Quite frankly, there was not quite as much water as I expected but it was the best that I have ever seen it.

Video of lower Bridal Wreath Falls: [ youtube video ]

After a leisurely break at the falls, we dunked our hats in the cool tea-colored water and began our hike back to the traihead. As we were getting into our car a group of three hikers approached and asked some question about the trail. They had not heard of Bridal Wreath Falls but seemed interested. We tried to discourage them from taking a long hike as it was now getting hot (with humidity, sun and no breeze) and we could see monsoon cumulus clouds building over the Rincons. They replied "We're use to it, we're from Riverside".

...just another crummy day in the Sonoran Desert!

With a long and heavy rainfall in central Tucson yesterday, I had hoped there would be water at Bridal Wreath. But there wasn't even a trickle. A beautiful hike on a beautiful day, though. The grasses are turning, so the meadow was especially beautiful.

A hard climb up when you have 30 lbs of toddler on your back, but the falls were in full roar and it was well worth the hike. Except for the part where I sucked at creek crossing and got a foot wet. Absolutely recommend, just bring sunscreen and if the water's up, step carefully. :)

Easy hike out and back to Bridal Wreath Falls in the Rincon's. No water at the falls...not even a drip. Bit warm but otherwise nice day for a hike.

Quick trip with Tyler to get out of the house before heading over to a Super Bowl party. About a gallon a minute was coming over the "falls". Very tiny pool at the bottom. Met several people out on the trail. Weather was very nice with a clear sky. Jogged back to the TH.

cindyl
Cindyl picked this hike for us as a shorter alternative to a more challenging hike that was out of the question due to snow at higher elevations. We timed it just right, starting after the rain ended, and ending before it started again, and we even caught a a ray of sun here and there on the way back. While the mere trickle of water over the falls was a little disappointing, we enjoyed the hike and seeing the three old tanks on the Three Tank Trail was pretty cool.
